Looking at sound proofing my tdi200 with dynamat so I will be able to hear myself think. Only problem is I have no front mats or carpet. I found TR649 | Carpet Set - Defender 4cyl with LT77 Gearbox (not 300TDI) (http://www.paddockspares.com/tr649-carpet-set-defender-4cyl-with-lt77-gearbox-not-300tdi.html)
Seems to be a good price. I do have a fairly tight budget but wondering if anyone else has any ideas?

Your first post - welcome to the forum :)
I cut up some of the 1m square rubber backed carpet tiles you can buy at Bunnings to make mats and trans tunnel cover. Think they were about $20 each.
Just need to buy a couple at the same time as they seem to change the patterns regularly and if you go back a couple of weeks later to buy a second one to finish off you might find its different.

Thank you! been lurking for a while thought it was about time to post.
I do currently have a fairly large sheet of rubber from carpet underlay, I guess I could just use that for mats.

I installed a thermo mat from a building site that was using it under colourbond, on top of this I have the original rubber matting and then on top of this I have carpet. The difference in sound is zero and the difference in heat may be 50%.

That's not too exciting haha. Heat wasn't too much of a problem that noise. Bonus was I can't hear the young one in the back crying!

Hi mate
Welcome. Try rare spares, they have a 12mm sticky back sheet that works a treat under the bonnet, read a story on lr monthly that said over 70% of cabin noise comes through the screen. They also have a 3mm bitumen sticky back sheet as well to put under the floor mats. I have done both and it has dropped the cabin noise significantly. I know the puma is a shed load quieter than a tdi but it worked a treat for me. I can mow have a decent conversation and dont have to turn the radio up to hear it.
Cheers Ian

Ok I'll give them a call tomorrow I'll try out the bonnet first and see how it goes. Cheers for the help

I did the retrofit of late-model lower door seals to the 130 a couple of weeks ago, it has made a dramatic difference to cabin noise.

Hi, I have been planning to upgrade the bottom door seals on our 130 also, if you don't mind about how much and where did you get the new type seals?
Cheers, Andrew.

I got them from Britcar, £86.57 including shipping from UK (can't remember what that was in colonial money, somewhere around $180). Part numbers and prices pasted from my invoice:
1 LR029307 DOOR LOWER SEAL RHR DEF 07> £11.88 £11.88
1 LR029308 DOOR LOWER SEAL LHR DEF 07> £11.88 £11.88
2 LR029309 DOOR WEATHERSTRIP LOWER FRONT DEF £24.83 £49.66

I have had my 130 dual cab Defender for over a year now and after an initial burst of throwing money at it I felt that the 3mm sticky backed alloy foil didn't really improve the noise reduction that much. Me, I'm nearly fifty with the normal hearing loss, I don't mind it, my Lady not so. So its phase 2. Strip out all seats, mats and give it a clean. Then after a lot of looking at other peoples idea's and trials I have decided to leave the sticky foil on and place rubber backed carpet tiles over everything I could, carpet side down. Another important point to note is the filling in of any holes or gaps and believe me there are lots on a hoover, sealastic, plates they are my tools of choice.

The reason for this is to absorb noise and vibration, just my thoughts I could well be wrong time will tell. Focus area's being the rear of the cab, lots of road noise being reflected through there, the gearbox tunnel, the cover is rubbish as far as noise reduction goes and the seat and cubby area's, another high noise transmission area.

I have missed all the rear of the car photo's but you can get the idea. So far this has cost me around $200 and I will take it for a drive next break to see/hear the results. The only area of concern will be the carpet face down in the foot well area's getting wet but the next fix it job is the leaking air con, should be a straight forward fix. Will keep this post updated as I go.

For me the most annoying noise complaint is wind noise on my 2012 110 wagon. I think it's just about impossible to stop it, i have heavily insulated my roof with dynamat and eva foam, with minimal results. Unless someone comes up with a great way to seal between the windows and door frames, and door frames to body. The engine noise is actually bearable from the 2.2.

Noise-cancelling headphones? :)
Our County is a V8. Don't mind the sound so much :D

I actually thought about that, well the technology anyway.

I just fitted the Dynamat from the front of the seat boxes back in my 90 and we noticed a big difference, the plan now is to do the firewall and foot wells next

I have used a dynamat type product (Stinger Roadkill) all through the back of my 90 and the entire roof. Also in the roof I used Formshield 10mm. It made a huge difference and I now don't hear the wind noise from my Hannibal roof rack.
I had the whole dash out a few weeks ago chasing a rattle which turned out to be the wiper mechanism (worm drive) rattling inside the metal tube (rack). I stripped the whole lot down and gave it a good greasing and reinstalled. I then used a closed cell foam pipe lagging and cable tied it to the outside of the wiper rack. Now I just barely hear the wiper mechanism when stationary, when driving I don't hear it at all. Well worth the weekends work to have quiet :D
While everything was out, as to get the dash out you need to remove the plastic transmission tunnel and the rubber matting. while it was all out I put some Stinger on either side of the forward part (metal) of the transmission tunnel, just this alone has made another huge difference to the sound coming up from that area.
So all in all I have had a very positive result from using soundproofing in my little deefa.

Hi I used dyna mat on my 110. Made a difference. I also applied a noise/rust product to the wheel arches. Now a stone flicks up the passengers don't have a heart attack.
If only I could find a quiter windscreen wiper motor.
Cheers

Tony, read my post above ;) it was worth the effort. The noise will be coming from the rack more so than the motor.

Thanks Cracka
I will have a look. I have had a few 110 ,s and very one has had a very noisy wiper motor. I don't think anything is wrong it is just loud. But the lagging sounds the way to go.
Cheers

Bushman83 has a video on this:

Down in the comments, he says that he added 12mm closed cell foam to the roof lining and some other areas a bit later on and that doing so was a significant improvement over dynamat alone.

Dynamat is great to stop drumming/vibrating panels but not great in stopping sound transmission. For that you will need some additional stuff to give you both an air gap and some density/barrier. Ideally some closed cell foam then a layer of something dense like barium impregnated vinyl then some more foam. Been trying to quiten down the 130 CC for the past six months with the above combinations. Next area to tackle is the firewall. I think I'm making progress but it could be just me going deaf!

Well took my motorcar for a drive and there is a marked improvement, still a fair bit of engine noise but the transmission is a whisper now compared to before. Will get some proper engine bay dynamat probably the 13mm stuff and cut it to fit. Worth the effort, definitely. There is a bloke selling those tiles cheap on gumtree

I know this an old thread but thought I would share that a couple of days ago I used Beam Rust Proofing in Belmont to put Rhino Liner in the rear wheel arches and also rust proof my new Defender. That combined with putting some yoga matting I bought in Bunnings under the floor mats has made a big difference.
So far the stones I have flicked up have been hardly noticeable. Wife is very happy!

I have access to Thermobreak closed cell foam and was thinking of installing them in my 110, are they any good in such an application?
