I found these lights on eBay (Beamax) $117 and it is from local Melbourne supplier.
Does anyone know of these as I want to buy two pairs and hook them up to my new LR expedition roof rack.
Am reluctant to spend $700 per pair on known brands.

You would do better to buy a led bar - lower profile and better for roof mounting.

Re the lights; Those reflectors look ridiculous! I doubt they're a decent light.

Seriously - go a light bar! For the roof, it does what roof lighting is suppose to do, and better

I don't mind LED bars but I prefer round lights, a pair pencil beam and one pair wide
I am not too concerned how they look as long as they do the job. I admit don't like the red surround

That's what I'm eluding to...
Even the best brands don't suit being up top...

What do you want the lights to do? Sounds like a funny question, but are they for outback roads, tight bush racks, etc?

Different lights suit different purposes...

Be aware of the rulings regarding light bars, they have changed recently and may affect what you're proposing. Basically long single light bars may not be approved but pairs of shorter light bars are OK.

It's worth checking with Vic Roads before buying one large single bar.

Most of my driving is in Victoria and not the outback. Having said that I am planning a long trip next year all the way to the Pilbara.

Thanks for heads up, I will check.
This is another option

If you like the round light look that's a better option for sure.

Single solid bars are now accepted, twin paired bars were the old acceptance - you can now run single long bars.

:D

Is that ruling applicable to Victoria? I've read (somewhere) recently what I think was a Vic Roads document reinforcing the old paired lights ruling and stating a 12 month moratorium on single bars was commenced in Feb this year. Of course I can't find it again now I want to. :(

Just checked VicRoads site and there is a section under drving lights but no mention of where and how you install them

I tried there too, but Vic Roads site was not very helpful, half the links didn't work anyway.

Here's the document I was referring to, it's a Qld document not Victorian but I would have thought ADR's are for the whole country though the states might implement them a little differently.

http://www.cviaq.com.au/PDFs/VSI%20HV25.0%20Driving%20Lamps.pdf

Here's the important bit

.......................TMR is placing a twelve month moratorium on the active enforcement of the requirement that vehicles fitted with LED light bar type driving light(s) should have those lights fitted in pairs, pending consideration of changes to ADR13/00.

The original article I read (somewhere) stated that the blanking strip allowed in Qld was not allowed in Victoria.

I have a friend that works at TJM and told me it is for QLD but he suspects it may flow down to Vic

Guys does anyone know what the amp rating is on the current defenders alternator ? Mine is 2013. Just need to make sure it can handle the new lights given the bars are 120-180w and including my current halogen driving lights at 100w

Hey Soz, have you considered the Warn lights? They look quite good. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=181005346901

Dunno if it is too late for the OP but I have a pair of these lights, 100w.

I have them on my bullbar and also have 70W HID in the High beam and bought them for long distance touring.

Here is my take.

They are very very bright lights, well made and aluminium housing. They actually look ok in the flesh and don't vibrate at all. So far so good.

The beam is a broad spot, with a guess of about 4 degrees of spread. My High beams throw a lot of light out and I wanted something that filled the light from about 300m out to infinity:D. These lights overlap my high beam about 150m out creating a bright spot which is too bright unless I set them too high. I am going to replace them with spot lights from the same seller in Melbourne. Sunyee I think it was. They seem to be ok.

These would be great if
a)My High Beam didn't throw as far as it does and wanted lights that fill 200m to 500m ish
b)I was more interested in High country driving lights as opposed to outback long stretches.
c)I think they would be great on the roof as the pattern would be perfect from up higher.

Hope that helps.

I have 2 pairs of the 4 inch version of the Beamax HID lights (spot beam) mounted on my roof rack (slung beneath the front bar). The lights are absolutely fine - they are a little stuttery when warming up but when 1 pair was $50 and the other $67 you can't complain!

I think they look pretty good and whilst the spiral reflector seems to be based entirely on pseudo science marketing BS it doesn't make them worse, it just doesn't obviously make them better in the way that they would have you believe.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't got around to it yet but now am leaning towards LED driving lights.
Got my eyes on these http://m.ebay.com.au/itm?itemId=261391687375

My recommendation is hids on the bar and leds on the roof - best all-round combo I've found (and I've tried a few).

That was my thinking too but at the moment I have my old hella halogen on the A-Bar and I want to put the LED on roof rack.
One concern I have is bonnet reflection and want to find out other member experience from roof mounted lights. I have the LR expedition rack.82098

I have no reflection issues (except for the very tip of one uhf antenna) from my 20k lumen light bar, but it's on a 3/4 length rack.

Frankly, the roof led is working much better than I expected - I'd definitely recommend it.
