Hi,
I have a 130 defender that has travelled 120,000kms. Just purchased it and the previous owener said it has made a clunk in the driveline somewhere for a while now.
It occurs when I change gears. I have jacked up the rear and wobble the wheels back and forward and left and right with the hand brake off. There appears to be play between the axle and flange. I have made a video here
Defender 130 axle and fange movement causing driveline clunk? - YouTube (http://youtu.be/IKILnFuKngQ)
Is this considered excessive wear, especially the left hand side?

Cheers

If the play is as great as it appears to be, then that is certainly one of several things that can contribute to a clunk.

I think the amount you have there might be similar to the wear in mine. I replaced them with new HD flanges and it reduced, but didn't eliminate the clunk. I have a little bit of wear in several other places too.

You may find the same ie that you reduce the clunk, but as there are so many other things that can contribute, you may not get rid of it completely.

EDIt. I just noticed that you said, "with the handbrake off". How much less is there with the handbrake on?

just done mine last week., had about half that movement . when I fitted the new ones, there was zero movement in the drivers side and I still had a little on the passenger side. im guessing its axle wear. and I still have the clonk although reduced somewhat. for the price of new flanges, I would replace for sure. easy job to do.

can also be the top a frame balljoint on the rear axle. load the vehicle to change the geometry and try again. if the noise stops or reduces it may the ball joint.
