Closing time in Britain as pub culture faces anti-drink lobbyists - Saturday Extra - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/saturdayextra/closing-time-for-britains-locals/5494408)
Inevitable I suppose. Pity. Got many fond memories of some of those pubs.

I can't remember the last time I went to a pub. Wait, it must have been before 2002 when I took redundancy from Telstra. I've never really liked pubs. Too many people, too noisy, and, years ago, too many smokers. Is smoking still allowed in pubs?

I've been in Australia 25 years.
The only thing I miss are the pubs and the beer.
There are very few equivalents in Oz to an English Pub and nowadays you can't make money selling beer.
One thing that really annoys me is going into a pub just for a drink and finding every single table laid for food.
There's a pretend "English Pub" between Sydenham & Melton in Victoria, and the last time I tried to have a drink in there I was greeted at the door by a waitress who asked me if she could help me. All I wanted was to walk up to the bar and order a beer - not possible there apparently, you have to be assigned a table!
Holgates in Woodend is superb however - especially the ESB, seved at cellar temperature.
Cheers

Yeah the ESB at the Holgate brewery is excellent stuff, from a proper old fashioned hand pump/beer engine and, like you said, served at cellar temps so it's cold, but not so bloody cold that you can't taste it!
I spent my 40th in there last year, sat at the bar all night with a few mates, drinking excellent beer, talking **** and putting the world to rights!! Top night and just what a pub is for:D

Yup no smoking in pubs and clubs for several years, that's why there are some clubs with balconies , and some have open areas , heated in winter, with pokies so the smokers can slap without pausing.

I still remember " the Travellers Joy", Portsmouth, when there for the Queens jubilee, 1977. The beer was Inde Coop, I think, and we enjoyed it. A family oriented pub, couldn't get a nicer mob. Matter of fact, when we pulled into London for a week, alongside H. M. S. Sheffield, we spent a couple of days seeing the sights there, then hired a car & toured to the south, dropping in to say G'day. The scrumpy at Plymouth, now that is another story :( :D Bob

It is a shame that so many uk pubs are closing , there is a hole lot of factors , the cost is one , greedy governments have taxed It to buggery , then the big brewers that have brought up so many of the small brewer's . The small pub's don't make the bottom line in profits , the cheaper cost of alcohol in Supermarket's , made by the same brewers . Then add to that lifestyle changes . The end result is thousands of people are loosing there livelihood's ,and small community's loose there local pub's , If this is progress I must be missing the point , cheers Jim ....

Jeez your mood hasn't improved since the Kiwi bird thread has it???
The usual comment from down under is that the beer is warm so where the hell did you go if they were putting ice cubes in beer?
Are you sure you weren't in some wanky bar and they were putting ice in cider??
As for poms in pommy pubs, well whudathunk it eh? You obviously weren't in London then, the pubs there are all full of Ozzies and kiwis:D

Ice cubes in beer is a yanky thing some ones off the planet. When I was in the UK on holiday with the olds many moons ago we always stopped for lunch in a village pub where we could. I was 16 then and no questions asked if I ordered a feed and a pint. In Ireland it was much the same great pubs and great times had by all. I'm just lucky I had the chance to experience it.

Used to live in England, but was too young to go into a Pub then. However, went back several years ago & went into a few then,...very low roof, wooden beams etc, very good atmosphere, and of course We've all seen what they're like on TV etc.
In Melbourne, I reckon the typical Aussie "Pub", is getting harder to find, what with pokies and all that sort of stuff,....but in the bush, it's a different matter.
We spend some time in Wycheproof, & the Terminus (The Termi!)is a ripper. Some really good locals, & we always eat in the bar,...rissoles, a couple of eggs, chips & vegies, can't beat it. Nothing flash, just a good old PUB, with a good atmosphere,...and if you're lucky, you'll even see a train going down the main street!
Cheers, Pickles.

I grew up in a small village community and the local pub was the place to be, especially after hours and the doors were locked ;) Skittles, darts, snooker and girls were the order of the day in that order :D
Just googled the old pub but it now seems to be a bit different to fourty years ago

On our road trip to the south of England, about lunchtime we pulled into a country pub, for a ploughmans lunch. Sitting at the bar was a distinguished elderly gentleman, tweed jacket, elbow patches, stereotype of the typical English country gentry. We ordered a pint, started chatting, asked him about local things to see [ as you do]. Had a wonderful chat, he bought us a pint, refused one back, and as we were leaving, he said " will Australians ever forgive us? " Now this knocked us back a bit, not quite knowing what to say. He must have seen our puzzled looks, and continued " for joining the Common Market? ". We assured him all was well, as long as England didn't beat us at cricket, but that gave us something to think about. Bob

Agree 85 County, I was dairy farming in tassie then , my sister and BIL where orchardists ,really knocked their industry.....we got by ,mainly through milk companies 'converting' to powders for Asian markets. I remember Dad's old Weekly News extolling farmers to ''produce for England'' ..The old bloke never said anything about the EEC though just carried on a Henry Lawson type my old dad ..

I was only talking to someone yesterday about UK pubs.
I lived in a small town and a group of us decided to go on a pub crawl to try and drink in every pub in town until someone worked out there were 20 odd that we could think of..... We gave it a go but a pint at each stopped us short of doing them all.
The real ales were served at room temperature hence us pommies have to put up with the warm beer comments. Lager and most bottled beers were served chilled.
Just went online and found that a few have closed in recent years.
Here's a link that lets you search for pubs in Hertfordshire.http://pubs.hertsale.org.uk/GetPubsByLocation.php
