Today was the day to fit the new rag top.
I started at the back and pulled it all forward to the windscreen which seemed the way to go. WRONG!!!!!
After figuring I could not get the front of the top pushed under the front hold down part, I pulled it all off to one side and slid it through from pass side to driver side - worked great!
Looks a million dollars compared to the old torn and mildewed one, and will now leave it for a few weeks to stretch and sort it self out before putting the roof rack back on.
Some points on the new one that my old one did not have were velcro tabs for the front of the ROPS bar, and velcro for the middle hood bow.
You can even see my 2 new Jerry Cans which came from a Trash and Treasure market today for $10 each!

Whilst everything went well with the new top, I'm not happy with the fitting over the top of the doors and the way it sits at the back.
Does anyone have any pointers for what I've done wrong?

G'day Alan,

Firstly close but no cigar! Lol - canopy looks great can't wait for mine to come.

Door tops - it needs to tuck in behind the door frame at the top, so pull off the rubber strips (these are there to help keep it tuck down) you will also need to loosen the tie down at the back of the door along the tub. Lift it up a bit drop it into the channel on top of the door, tie it all down, put the rubber strip back on.

At the back the rope that ties down the back and pulls it in all tight needs to go through the eyelet you can see in the photo then it goes through the eyelet in the side flap that extends past the end of the tub - then wrap the rope around the rear hoop (the left hand side needs to go around the pipe anti clock wise so it pulls everything in tight - the drivers side needs to wrap around clockwise to pull it all in tight .

then tie it off - but pull it down as tight as possible - you wont break the rope or tear the canvas.

Hope this makes sense and helps!

cheers
Scott

And the "Ears" on the rear flap that wrap around the sides tuck under the large piece sewn onto the sides. The web strap passes beneath that to go to the securing buckle. This stops the wind ballooning out the rear flap.

Quote: "and will now leave it for a few weeks to stretch.." Canvas, as it weathers, generally shrinks. LandroverScott's instruction to pull it down as tight as possible is good, as it will retain it's tensioned size. If not tensioned, shrinkage will occur, and you will never get it to sit right.

That looks great :) but I hope you have an undercover place to store your Perentie, mine came with a new canvas - but a few months down the line it has aged a lot. I've heard that throwing a tarp over the thing when parked can help a great deal.

Yes it will shrink up to 5% on the warp but hold on the weft. the warp will be along the length on the vehicle so times the length of the vehicle by 5% and that is how much it will shrink if not retrained. If you restrain it then wet it the canopy will "set" and not shrink after that.

hope that makes sense

anyway message is tie it down as tight as possible and leave it that way.

yes you are trying to protect it from UV damage. rain wont damage if allowed to dry but staying wet eg pooling up will start mould which will then eat into the canvas and leave the poly scrim ie the thin patches you see

Dont forget to not leave it out in the sun too long, or it could well fade very quickly.

On the subject of shrinkage, I have seen a number of new supplied Canvas's that have already started to shrink.

Yes fading is UV damage , the UV stabilizers in the painted pattern on the canvas is not very strong

G'day Folks :)

The way I was taught with Landrover canvas tops, and as I have done on my 2a and lightweight is to wet it down with a hose, then pull/adjust tightly and leave out in the sun to dry, worked a treat on both my series, but they have reasonably thick canvas,so I would suggest that you use disgression on tightening down.

I am off to look at some Perenties on Monday in Brisbane, and will get one as soon as I sell my Lightweight,24V with 33,140 miles on it :)

cheers

Hi Kevin,

Yes you are correct, my comment in previous message was

"If you restrain it then wet it the canopy will "set" and not shrink after that."

The new poly/cotton canvas has a much higher tear and tensile strength than the old duct canvas which was thicker and heavier.

cheers
Scott

Looks great Scott - now I see what you mean for the tie down at the rear of the canvas. Going to sort mine this morning and then put it in the rain for a few hours to get wet!
On a side note, Robco should be doing pretty well out of the additional sales from the selling off of the Perenties - I doubt they expected it to happen.

seat covers $165 incl GSt each + postage
GS Canopy $1500 incl GSt postage included, buy the seat covers with canopy and save the postage

in my opinion well priced for a quality product.

Fresh canvas does look very nice.

Do you know if the FFR spec canopy is much more expensive?

Aussie Jeepster
17th June 2014, 06:46 AM
I think the FFR canvas is $1650 from memory.
Scott - the plastic is a good idea - you should have thought of it before I ordered mine, I didn't know they could do it (and I didn't think of it!!).
Mine looks much better now its tied down correctly. I'll get some pics when there is some sunshine.

Any idea if Robco would do a non-military canvas to fit a Perentie 110 as well?
