I am considering a bul!bar / winch for my 2.7 D4 currently a name like arb or opposite lock. At the same time I am planning for underbody protection.

Any current bullbar owners like to comment on what underbody protection is needed compatible with bar?

Main concern is intercooler and radiator damage, rock sliders maybe.

Main need is a robust tourer with a trip up the cape next year the biggest challenge.

I think I can help you there :)

If I get out early enough (and it's light still) will try to get some pics...

If you fit a ARB or OL bar then you get plenty of great underbody protection back to the OEM steel plate that covers the sump etc.

Yes you can get a protection plate for the auto and nearly everything else you can think off if you really want to, but in my opinion most are serious overkill other than the compressor protection plate that Gordon (GOE) sells.

Add in a good set of rock sliders and you have most everything you need covered.

The first thing that usually gets flattened is the dual exhaust pipes that go under the diff, but I had mine replaced by the local exhaust shop for, from memory, $120, so that's no big deal.

I make a replacement heavy-duty plate for the underside of the ARB bar, will consider one for an OL bar if there's the demand.

Cheers,

Gordon

I've had the opportunity to test my clearance and can say without the protection I would have done some much more serious damage.
I'm plated from the bar back to the back of the TCase and then under the tank as well - I really mashed that up!

Next will be compressor guard, air tank guard, Arm sliders and rear diff guard.

Hi Tombie, where did you get the fuel tank cover from? Was it a custom job?

Devon 4x4 - the freight was more than the plate :(

A couple of questions..

How did you find the iron man gear for fit and finish? I looked at it previously however was unsure how well it would link up with the bullbar (seems good on yours).

What are you doing for the air tank and rear diff guards? If been thinking seriously about making a diff/exhaust guard.
I was going to make some templates from thick cardboard first and then fabricate either from ally plate or steel.

I have already put a bit of a flat spot in the air tank and have a sizable dent in the factory fuel tank guard.
