Winch problem

So ya luv' ya kids .. well sometimes :(:( My youngest, electrician against my wishes took the FFR to a building site today (Sunday), his team struggled all day yesterday pulling cables between the pits (was raining). The FFR pulled them no worries he says, however now a problem with the winch.

So collectively we know little about the winch, 1st machine I have had with a PTO winch. So he says, he put in the middle PTO position, pulled the cable out, and then put it in gear to power it in, using the lever on the front .. did this successfully 4 times with a couple of guys helping him feed it. When finishing he was feeding it in himself and it jammed up on the right. He just wrapped the remaining cable around the bullbar and brought it home. I tried freeing it by hand and its jammed.

So, can you put it in a reverse gear and at the same time pull the cable to see whether it frees ?? Any other things I should try ??

G'day Rosco, Sounds like you have a few cable wraps jammed up at one end of the winch. This does happen if you are pulling from one side or not feeding it evenly onto the spool. As they do not have a levelwind you have to watch it feeding on and try to ensure it doesn't bunch up at one end by pulling sidewards on the cable as it sounds like has happened with yours. Was it that tight that the clutch was slipping ( you would hear a loud clacking noise if it was). It is unlikely that you will be able to pull the cable out by hand if this has happened. Easiest way to fix it is tie the rope off to a tree or something heavy (another vehicle etc), engage the winch, put the transfer case in low range, select reverse gear and engage the pto. Let the clutch out slowly and as you reverse it should feed out while keeping tension on the cable. That ought to fix it.:)

Yes you can use reverse.....but if it's jammed I doubt it will work. Just put the winch in free spool, connect the hook end to a tree or something solid and reverse the 110

With all the recommendations we were successful in freeing it today. We had to use a combination of tension and the winch in reverse gear to free it and wind off over half the drum off. Extremely annoying he has broken 1 wire strand on the cable near the end coupling, rest of the strands are fine. The cable is near new.

I guess this means I have 90% (if there are 10 strands) capability which seems okay. As an option as I wouldn't loose much length could you have it cut and the coupling reattached to bring back the full capacity ?? And if so who in Sydney would do that ??

My suggestion is you could call around some specialist Rigging/Lifting suppliers in your area they should have the equipment to do that.
