Bob, it was Mo Mackackie and his popular radio show was still running when I was a primary schoolboy 1950's.

Yep, I remember Mo and those old radio days.
Living on the farm we would sit around the old battery wireless and laugh our heads off.
There were lots of radio serials, Nan liked to listen to Doctor Mack, I liked Hop Harrigan.
Then we had the hit parade started by Alan Toohey, I think, half hour on Thursday nights. Us kids were wrapped in that.
Nan would call Pop in from the paddock when it was time to listen to Blue Hills.
Sigh.

I don't remember Mo but my brother took me to the Theatre Royal In Brisbane to see George Wallace Senior and Rosie Sturgess.
The main thing I remember as a pre pubescent boy was at each corner of the stage there were topless beautiful women who were not allowed to move.
I recall one got an unbearable itch and had to scratch. Made my day.

Heh heh.
I went to that Thearte Royal with my father in law when we went to Qld to pay him a visit in 1959.
I remember George had a trick with a huge safety pin, Shudder, If he missed the target he would he would have scewered his dong.
For a few seconds a light would come on and a totolly naked girl would be standing there. Beautiful. Then that light would go out and the curtain would come down.
After the show he wanted to show me the red light area. From memory brothels were legal at that stage.
You could pay two shillings and go in and look at the scantilly dressed girls and chat.
He reckoned it was two bob well spent. Each his own, I only went there the once.

The Theatre Royal didn't last much past 1959. TV finished it. Very popular in its day. Many people had permanent bookings for seats each week. The theatre had two entrances. Downstairs to the left and upstairs to the right and in the middle "The Theatre Royal Hotel". One could slip out at intermission and scoff down a couple or more beers.

Yes it became a disco with live bands.
Was it The Cave?
Ross D Wylie used to play there sometimes.
Could get a bit rough but nothing like what you hear these days.
Not many drugs AFAIR but lots of grog.

While we are talking radio shows does any body remember the Sunday morning show, "The Charlie Chuckles Club". It came on at 8am Sunday morning and Charlie would read out the comics in the Sunday Telegraph (complete with sound effects) for us kids to listen to.
This was in the early to mid 1950's. You could join the club and you become known as a "Chuckler". You received a little badge with a Kookaburra on it to wear.:D
Just wondering if anybody else was a "Chuckler"!!!:p

TC's Sound Lounge. The Cave was further south in Elizabeth St. towards the Treasury Hotel. TC's in 63-64 was a renowned spot for picking up gaol bait teenage girls out on the town. Sadler's Sound Lounge was across Elizabeth St. near the Albert St. corner and was up-market.

At my Nana's then it was all shut up at 7 o'clock for the ABC News followed by her serials, When a Girl Marries, Courtship and Marriage, and Martin's Corner. Sunday afternoon was the children's show, The Sea Rover. Through the week was Greenbottle, The Search for the
Golden Boomerang, Smoky Dawson, Larry Kent Private
Eye, and Randy Stone Covers the Nightbeat.

Crikey I had forgotten about Martins Corner.
Besides the comics, we used to read the soft cover books by Carter Brown.
Detective stories.
They were very risque and suggestive, they used to mention things like PANTIES and stuff.
Jeez we used to snigger and discuss it all and swap books.
Of course they had to be hidden from the adults and we were sworn to secrecy.

Brian, would Greenbottle be the same as "Yes What"? ("Goooood morning boys")
A bloke I knew used to see Roy Rene on stage in Sydney, and he recounted some of the goings-on to me. Unfortunately I can't repeat them here, seeing as this is a family forum.
Once, Roy had a horse on stage with him. The horse was displaying rampant evidence that it was a male, and the audience tittered. Roy walked around the horse and inspected it from all angles, in particular looking underneath it. Then he stood up, faced the audience, and said "I wonder what's the matter with Bess tonight?" The audience, up to now just laughing, howled.

Ian, not in my time there. Maybe earlier when it was Thiess-White. Thiess were the Toyota commercial vehicle distributors. Diverging slightly, there are bonneted Hino (perhaps Fuso? Same thing, four letter rubbish) body trucks sold in the USA with cabs built by Freightliner. Only COE trucks sold in the USA nowadays are small Jap city delivery trucks, or purpose built garbage trucks which are LCF not COE. The garbos are mostly Mack and Autocar, with a few old Volvo-Whites based on the Road Expeditor..
