View Full Version : Auxiliary Battery Setup

I'm considering my options for setting up my auxiliary battery. I've been reading various threads on different set ups etc and have a few questions.

First though in my Dmax I have a battery box with a 100Ah Full River battery in the tray connected to my car and solar panel through a C-tek 250DS. I have connected the Anderson plug for my camper trailer through the auxiliary battery box.

In my 2014 Defender 110 wagon I will be needing to connect an Anderson plug at the rear for my Camper trailer plus a vehicle auxiliary battery with capacity for Solar charging.

My initial questions are:

If I connect an isolator such as a Traxide how and where do I connect the solar regulator? This would be for the car only as the camper already has a Redarc battery management system fitted.

I'm wanting to increase my auxiliary battery capacity to 130Ah. What are ways of setting this up so both batteries fit under the passenger seat?

Will there also be room to fit an isolator and solar regulator in the same space under the seat?

I'm sure I will have more questions once I have more information.

Thanks

You can charge your auxiliary battery ( and your main once the isolating relay recloses) directly through your third battery Anderson plug - that's how I do it.

Suspect getting a 130a/h in will be a real struggle - particularly if you want to get that other stuff in there too.

A 130a/h AGM is a lot of capacity (assuming (80%DOD)) - I assume you want to run a fridge for ~ 5 days without any form of charging?

I was thinking 130Ah because with my original set up in the ute which was a battery box sold by one of the large 4WD chains I had regular issues with keeping it charged. I eventually junked the box and replaced it with the current set up which works a lot better and with the K's I did at Exmouth I didn't charge up the ute battery once.

Part of the problem I have is that when on holiday I tend to go fishing all day so I'm not at the campsite turning my solar panel to maximise the return from the sun. This resulted in running out of power on the last day of a 2 week trip to Shark Bay in my camper trailer.

I am considering a separate solar panel for the Defender in the future.

If anyone has any recommendations on better ways to set up the auxiliary battery it would be appreciated.
