Old Mal,the mad greek who has his 2a army ambo here for surgery came for a drive in Snow White today.
He was blown away in how far Landys have evolved since his 1965 blood box.The smoothness, the feeling of acceleration, the juke box,and the fact that the thing was moving along at quite a speed and it felt like 60kmh.
Took him on a gravel road and said Im about to do an emergency stop at 120kmh,prepare yourself. He was speechless, says he has NEVER stopped so quickly in any vehicle on bitumen never mind gravel, also couldnt believe we stopped in a dead straight line;);););););););).

When I took my 80 y.o. dad for a blast in mine he only had one question...

"Are you SURE it's a diesel? ;):D

Did you do it hands off ? One of Gordons tests for drivers on his GOE course, is to pull the handbrake on at 80kmh with hands off the steering wheel. I think everyone cheated with their fingers looped loosely around the steering wheel. The vehicle comes to a full stop in a straight line

I WAS going to try the emergency brake, put I chickened out.The salesman did point out how to use it during delivery.
A great option for the passenger if the driver is suffering a medical emergency.Shame is how many passengers would know its there, never mind the D4 owners that dont know;););););););)

I did demonstrate it to my wife on a gravel road so if there was an emergency she knew what to do.
I think it is a good idea that both partners/passengers/alternate drivers know that. My wife rarely drives the D4, as she prefers her Golf, but does on occasions.

Haha I show everyone the emergency stop when I take them for a drive it's a great thing.

Ok folks..... can someone let me into the "emergency Stop" secret?....

Looked through the owners manual and can't find anything. Sounds like something I should know about....:(

Pull park brake on while on any surface.

Emergency braking stops car phenomenally fast and straight.

Have tried at 80kph on the power lines on GOE course, and bitumen at 100kph....you do need to be prepared for it.

Brett....

Thanks Brett,

That's what I was kind of guessing, but was hesitant to try based on a guess.

Looks like I have something new to go and try :)

Don't feel bad Andrew, in all these years I've not tried mine either. Like so many computerised features, I just trust that it will work when needed :)

Also have you tried the HDC yet ? Go find the steepest slipperiest mucky hill you can and drive off it with hdc on and no feet using only the cruise control +\- to moderate or increase speed ... :)

It would also be very useful if the brake master cylinder or booster fails if it can be thought of in time.

Havent yet Mick.
Only used it in the D2 to "excersise" the shuttle valves,it was way too fast and not really required in a manual vehicle.I believe the D4 system is more up to the task, and being an auto it may be more of use;););););)

In low range you have similar control as a manual if you shift manually (quite surprising to me as my d3 is the only auto 4wd I've had). The hdc is excellent - requires a bit of a leap of faith for some - but it goes really slow if you want it too and keeps the car very straight even on the most gnarly of descents ! Just don't be like my wife and accidentally activate it around town (handbag) and then come home saying I've broken the car (red faced when i asked why she hadn't turned it off) ... Haha

Andy it's like chalk and cheese!

As you said, the D2 HDC was way too fast and frankly a couple of time nearly got me into serious trouble.

The D4 HDC is brilliant.....

No more squeezing the sphincter and praying as you go over the edge :p

It would also be very useful if the brake master cylinder or booster fails if it can be thought of in time.

Im not to sure about that from what i was told when i got the car it does a hard ABS lock (not as hard as it can but as hard as is comfortable) then when it gets below 3kmh it pulls the park brake on. Because i thought it was a full lock up but when you try the park brake and then jam the brakes on hard holy crap they pull it up bloody quick. So i think it does a hard brake but also making it easier for the passenger to steer it off the road.

As I have mentioned before that I have tried it, I also kept my foot hard on the accelerator when I got Mrs Plane Fixer to pull the hand brake on. The moment the brake lever was lifted it cut the power and the stopping distance was very short.
This makes it an extremely safe backup, as if the driver has some sort of medical problem with the foot then just pushing the accelerator hard, the hand brake will over ride it. I am happy my wife knows it as I am no spring chicken either.

Geez Andy, you have done well and be congratulated for being able to get a D4 before you are 50, I was well over 60 when I got mine, as I always thought they were old farts carriages:wasntme:

I had just turned 50 when I got my D4.

I'm not one of those flash yuppies like Andrew. Still mustn't criticise too much at least he didn't rock up in a black X5.

Im not to sure about that from what i was told when i got the car it does a hard ABS lockABS doesn't use the master cylinder/booster other than as a source of enough fluid to initially apply the brakes, running the ABS pump instead of requiring pedal pressure. Hence the emergency handbrake will do the job if the master cylinder fails providing there is some fluid in the reservoir.
