Took my rangie for a test run and this awful noise was coming from the turbo.
So stripped it down (I had put a bearing kit in it ages ago and can't remember if I noticed the issue or not and was going to look into it) and noticed the steel disc that sits behind the exhaust impeller moves all over the place.
So went through my box of stripped turbo's (2 more the same) and can't seem to find any extra parts that would retain this.
Is it just sandwiched between the impeller and that cartridge? I wouldn't think so.

Yep. They rattle around on my spare turbos too.

The two VNT's which are garage ornaments rattle, but I've never heard anything from the GT1646V on the skoda.

Small tack weld?

Perhaps a small shim, spring or washer instead.

My other vehicles with vnt's don't make noises.
With a shim, the steel disc would wear as it spins agains the cartridge. A little confusing

The heat shield should be stationary.

OK after looking and looking at this damn thing, I can see no possible way of attaching this heat shield thingy.
Soooo is it even supposed to be there?.
My next Turbo will be a dumb one:)

Well after many hours of Googling, I found the info I needed on a VW forum. Turns out the heat shield just sits there between the cartridge and the impeller. What I think I had done wrong is, the shield is slightly dished, I had it around the wrong way so it was hitting the impeller. Well I hope that's it:)

Pretty sure they're supposed to be flat, but yeah dished into the vanes would explain some noise.

The dish is very slight, all 3 heat sheilds I have have it.

I saw dished or frisbee shaped shield on some kits on ebay etc.

Well I worked out what was happening with the heat shield.
What I was doing was fitting the heat shield between the exhaust impeller and the cartridge, now this is where its supposed to go, but you need to fit it when the Turbo is on its side so the shield is laying flat. If you try fit it with the shield and turbo in the vertical position (normal Turbo position), it just slips down.
So the heat shield is held into its position by the outer diameter of it pressing against the ring the vanes are on (can't remember its name) and the inner diameter pressing against the turbine cartridge like meat in a sandwich.

So now I have no more rattles:D:D, but boy it has a really loud Turbo whine.:)

Test run take two this weekend:banana::banana:

(Once I sort the alternator:()

Ok so I think I have another issue, turbo is so noisy its rediculous, sounds like a jet in there. Any ideas?

Bent shaft putting the compressor wheel on a different orbit?
Boost or exhaust leak?

Nope, idiot miss matched the wrong thrust washer and put the compressor wheel into the housing:mad:.
