View Full Version : Edelbrock Carb Heat Problems?

I have a 4 barrel Edelbrock on top of Edelbrock Performer manifold (RR 3.9l v8) and face the issue of a very very hot carbie that's causing fuel vapor issues - I think.

The carbie is way to hot to touch and my fuel economy non - existent. The smell of fuel vapors and unburnt (?) fuel is very evident. The engine runs like a dog and I am worried it will cause a hydraulic lock.

Its booked into a carbie specialist in 2 weeks for surgery, but thought I would ask the experts here for any insights!

I am advised that a 1/2 inch Bakelite block that lifts the carby will assist, but i struggle to believe that 1/2 inch will be enough.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts?

At Carbie specialist I will check dizzy and coil to see if they too are contributing.

Thanks in advance....

Cant say i had any heat issues on my RRC when i ran a holley, is the t/stat the correct temp ? You could try making a heat shield from alloy sheet and see if that helps.

The Bakelite insulator will fix it. Also see if you can arrange a cold air intake if you don't already have one, and a cold air duct from the front of the car to blow outside air over the float bowl. Every little bit helps as the actress said to the bishop.

I had the same problem with V8 falcon and the spacer solved the problem.
Mine was perculating petrol when hot after turning off the engine too.

You can get 1 inch

I cant answer your question but can I ask.
Can you still buy this Edelbrock and carb gear to fit a 3.5 v8I ?

Get an Edelbrock manifold and a Rochester Quadrajet. A far better carburettor, and readily available from any wrecker.

Aren't you going to be a bit light on for air cleaner clearance with a 1inch spacer?
I suppose you can do a body lift.

Quadrajet is a beautiful carb, the Edelbrock however is a close second/ almost copy.
I also agree the bakelite spacer should help.

I had a few issues with warping the top cover on a Quadrajet with an insulator, be very careful how tight it is bolted down IIRC the Edelbrock carb also has 2 of the bolts going through the whole carb down to the manifold.

Great looking engine/ installation BTW!

Anyone have a part number for the Edelbrock manifold and can you still buy a suitable new Quadrajet carby ?

You may need to rejet the carb. Not too hard to do on the Edelbrock with their jetting kit.

I used the genuine Edelbrock insulating spacer on my 4.6. Yes the Performer inlet manifolds are available from most speed shops.

I had a Holley 600 double pumper many years ago, when i was 18 on a 302 windsor in a rangie, it would get the dreaded vapour lock......wait for half an hour to restart

The spacer I can assure you will fix it:)

I have never had to re-jet a Quadrajet yet. They work well straight up. I have installed them on Chrysler Hemi 6's; Rover V8's; Holden 6's with the secondary throats fixed shut, with one secondary, and on a turbo conversion; Bedford trucks. They pass fuel through the jets in proportion to the volume of air passing through the venturis and jet sizes don't seem to make much difference. All came from wreckers or swap meets and mostly were from 253, 308, 350 Holden V8's. I suppose a big block might require re-jetting simply because of the amount of fuel required when under full load. You will need a minor fiddle with the idle screws. If you find access awkward, there is a special tool.
