hi guys

I am going to get a Raised air intake. which I am thinking of installing myself [emoji51] I also want to add a uhf antenna to the side of the roofrack ( with fold down bracket if I can find one to fit), and also a light bar at the front.

can I run the cables up inside the rai? or would I affect waterproofing and would they make a noise? I am just concerned about taking off the trim on the windscreen pillar in case it doesn't go back with two cables in there.

thanks

Simon

RAI isn't water sealed. A Snorkel is...

You could seal it; just take your time...

Just to add...

Yes you can cable inside, or on a Disco/RRS you could go up behind the A pillar trim.

I have previously had my antenna on the roof rack crossbar, with cable ran as above. I just had to cut a small notch out of the top of the trim, so the cable did not get cut where it exits.

thanks I had read that it was not watertight but I thought LR had made improvements to it? if not I guess I can search to see how others have achieved this

Simon i got my LR RAI installed by Opposite Lock who sealed it between the RAI/Body/intake and the airbox itself, required changes to the the hoses as they are only air rated. The LR dealership would not do this, they would only fit it as a standard RAI. All up including LR RAI, fitting and sealing it cost me approx $1750, trouble is every time its serviced and the air filter is changed, its not sealed anymore :), i have been told a slop of vaseline should sort it next time i go wading

Or Opposite Lock will install a Safari snorkel for about $1000 less than that....

Not for the Sport .. i have an official Range Rover Sport LR Accessory.. they are pretty rare. Yes Safari do produce them for the D4's, however i was answering
a specific question in regard to the LR RAI that was raised (excuse the pun)

My mistake..... I was trying to help Simoncs find a more cost effective solution....didn't realise he drove a RRS..

not sure what he drives Mark, just providing some facts in regard to my route as they say and what it cost.. If he has a Disco, then why not go the Safari route... a bit uglier yes.. but practical :wasntme:

it is for a D4. I am aware of the safari but despite it being cheaper and waterproof, it is just too fugly. it makes the car look like a Toyota 😆

I saw a D3 with a small UHF antenna mounted on the top os his snorkel at the Land Rover Expo on the weekend. But cable was up the A pillar and entered the snorkel near the top just so it could come up under the antenna mount.

Not sure I loved the look but it was unique.

And yes the safari snorkel is not beautiful but it does what it is supposed to do, don't know why you would pay double to get an inferior solution.

I've got a LR RAI on my d3(not by choice, it was there when I brought it) and my UHF antenna is mounted ontop of the intake also. Difference with mine is the cable runs down the intake and comes out near the rear corner of the bonnet.

Has anyone changed over from the LR unit to a safari? Just wondering if the change over leaves any holes etc..mthat will need to be tidiied up

because I only use my D4 for shopping so it has to look good[emoji12]

seriously though I will look to waterproof it so I get the best of both world's. I am very nervous about drilling into the pillar though. I had to drill to fit the ladder but that was at least behind the door latch. I need to look at the instructions still, but am I drilling on the outside painted part of the pillar or is it under the removeable windscreen strip?

The drilling is under the strip for the Safari. Use cobalt drill bits, the steel is HARD! Have a look here https://app.box.com/d3safarisnorkelinstructions for Safari fitting instructions. It's not too bad, just take your time.

And instructions for RAI fitment are here https://app.box.com/s/zww8b7rgl646mq06d0nt

I am very nervous about drilling into the pillar though.

As Will said, the drilling is doable and the cost I mentioned was fitted anyway, the guys that installed mine did a very tidy job.

I'm not sure if you are coming to Lake Lyell, or whether you want to get this done before that, but you are welcome to take a close look at mine, if that helps...

Cheers,

So after setting out on my research to find out how to make the RAI watertight, it appears i didn't end up with the answer i was looking for.

Effectively the RAI is not meant for wading at all, and so even trying to waterproof it seems to have little value.

Please see this thread where I have mentioned the feedback i received from LR and Mantec, who make the RAI. (this might also suggest that a snorkel would also not improve wading).

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic118283.html

So as I was going to run my cabling up the RAI, or if not at least use it to hide the cables as they come out of the A pillar trim, this now seems to be about the only value that it adds. Seems expensive at about $900 delivered with the other two parts required for the D4 3ltr, when it doesn't really add much functionality.

Now i am debating whether i get it or not?

There is enough room to run rg58 cable under the drivers side windshield trim it then can be routed to run under the roof gutter trim as far rearwards as you need. You can then drill a small hole in this trim for cable to exit to antenna mounted as per your preference. This was my old setup.
