Hey,
I'm Bloody over the DIY thing on Disco's
How many weeks have i been telling you all i've been building this Storage System....

It never Ends....

1st it was simple rear system. Then i thought... Jerry can holders....2 Seater. Bigger storage...
Then the Front section was waisted..... So a Front Storage....
Then i thought.... A inside Storage Cage.... Then maybe a rear Table on the Door.

Mmmmm Need Power at the rear for the Fridge and Shower and Flouro's

And a Better Reverse Light......

What am i going to do with the HiLift??? Where do i find jacking points???
Where will i mount it??

If it rains when we Have a coffee can we keep dry... Need an Awning...

So i got excited... i had the Master plan to build the Best equiped non commercial LR ever...... Ha Ha Ha... next I'll conquer the WORLD.....

I designed i built i'm testing.... I'm over it all.....

Pix are in the Gallery under "Volvo164 aka Clarkie"

I'm going to build a Web page dedicated to the Self destruction of human life with the Building of the TDI....

Mrs Clarkie last night asked me how much longer i'll be working on the 4WD. I said "Its British..... i'll be working on it until we sell it...."

So she asked me to have a break and spend some time with her and the Pets.... Poor Pussy was getting neglected.... (the cat you filthy animals... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif )

But i have not finished... I'm adicted.... i have to spend time on the Disco.... I'll sneak out at 3am and wipe the oil off the transfer case....

So i've almost finished until we come back from the Highcountry Trip on the 11th of Feb.

Only have to do the Wheel bearing Selas and Thats it.

So the List i've done so far..... Please check these off the Gunna List...
Storage, Front and Rear
Interior Cage
Power to Rear, Fused and tested.
Reverse Lamp
Rear Table on Door
Jerry Can Holders
Gas Bottle Holder
Interior Light upgrade
Rear Awning
Canvas Seat Covers
Hi Lift Jacking points Made and tested.... Note: Bull bar moves.. :?
GPS installed
UHF main Brain Moved
Boost Gauge
Diff Breathers Ran in the cabin and up the pillars
Snorkle
Dual Battery
Intercooler moved for Flow.
235/85/16 BFG AT
50mm Lift
Camel Cut

To Be Done:
TripMeter (Terratrip)
Volt Meter
Rear Wheel Seals (bearings)
Mount for Hi Lift.... (Bull bar???)
Tail Light Guards?
Weld Frame on Front Seats. (bwoken)

So over the past 6 weeks or more i've done some seriour work... Ans Wifey did not weld any of it.... She asked.. I said " NO ITS MY PROJECT... GET OUT OF MY SHED........ "

Steve

Steve take a Bex and have a lie down. I like the comment on it being British I'll stop working on it when we sell it.
It makes you wonder why? 8O
Why do we bother? 8O
Then when it all comes together for that brief majic moment once every life time. When all the planets align and the circle of life is in perfect harmony. Then, and only then, we know as only a Landrover Owner can know it's the worlds best 4x4.
Well done and congratulations on a good looking and well thought out project. 8) 8)

All i can say, is that, its a good thing we do it for the love of it. At least you are closer to the end than I am. I havent even started yet. But its what us Landy folk do, we take an already awsome product and make it even better. Matt

For those of a Shakespearean bent:

Caliban (the Monster in The Tempest) was described as "being sent half- made into the world"

This is the Land Rover Condition.

At least we have something to build on.

A Land Rover is like a Mr Squiggle picture. First you start with a couple lines and you are resonsible for making the masterpeice. All you get with a toyo is a blank canvas, with no character and a pencil. Matt

Ahh Sad ehh....
If i started with a $30k Suzi i'd be in real trouble....

When is Volvo going to build that V8 XC90 into a real 4WD.... i'll be in one...

Sad, but here is a quick story... Not being Bias, but i have had the odd BL car...

ok British Leyland Products i've owned
Austin 850 Mini
Morris Cooper
Leyland Mini
Austin 1800 Ute x 2
Austin 1800 Sedan
Disco.

All have had quirks..... all leak oil... all leak water.... and have crap heaters.... and crap ventilation....

OK
Euro cars i've owned
Volvo 164 x 8
Volvo 144, 145, 244, 242, 245, 264 (V6)
BMW 3.0S
Saab 900 Convertible
Volvo 940 x2
Volvo V40 T4

All have been good cars, all have great heating, drive well, stop well and handle good to great.
Build quality of German and Swedish cars are spot on

Conclusion:
Most things from Europe are Great.... Exception of Pommy.

I'm not knocking any British built cars as a general, but i'm saying the Poms need to look further than woodgrain and leather and look at the rest of the world.... Prime example is Ford telling the LR factory to pick up its game or else...

I love My Disco, its better than the 1966 Sandcruiser i had and better than the 1986 Troopy i had.

Most Real 4WD's (solid axle) are all about the same in the Bush.
Some are better, some are stronger, some have better gearing, some have better clearance....
If i had my time again, as i will one day... i'll get a Defender 110 or 130 TDI. Its like the Troopy. Tuff and simple.

Your all right. We get a good 4wd and perfect it.....
We do it with all our toys...
My Volvo's are no exception... Mind you i dont use them in the bush other than the Rally Car. Now there is a Car i spent some Ching $$ Ching on.... it was fast and stopped fantastic.... i got bored so i sold it and started building another.....

I'm a bit of a Gunna most of the time.. Start projects. Never finish them...

Troopy was spot on. OME. Fuel range of 1500km, heaps of clearance, leaf springs. Outback Slide out draws. Dual battery ect. Setup for the week holiday or 6 months... Wife hated it. To big and rode like a Truck.... Hey no suprises why... Dont Series 1-3 do that??? There is reason whey they ride like a Truck?? Yep cause thats called engineering to last...

OK i've crapped on enough... time for me to update my pix in the gallery...

Hey guys come out in 2 weeks time in the High Country... i'll be bored with Jap 4WD's....

Regards
Steve

Disco breaks are the best in the business, even the most biased man in the motoring world (Roothy at 4wd Monthly) admits it. There have been many situations where i have avoided an accident in the Disco, where i would have had one in either my old or stacey's commodore. Even stacey was supprised when the disco pulled up rather quick. Matt

Yes your right.
Disco Brakes are the best in the Business. But that is only 4WD Business.
I would say the newer 4WD are on par.

Back in the early Rangie days the towing capacity was high due to the Brakes.

But compare the Disco's to Euro Car Brakes.... Then they are average.

Dont get me wrong. LR Stop better than any 4WD i've driven.
The Troopy, When i braked in emergency i just picked the cheapest thing to hit......
Called Controlled Damage mode.....

But drive a Nice Euro car and the Brakes are scarey how good they are.... or am i being Biased......

Roothy is a Biased man, but he does know his stuff. I'm just an amature with an uneducated opinion.

He He....
Crikey.... i've loaded me new pix in the gallery on page 5 and its Sleep time....

Not biased volvo, just unfairly comparing the Disco brakes with a vehicle which it shouldnt really be compared with. I would want to hope the brakes on a Beamer are better than a disco. Matt

Mmmm OK
but also look at the weight of a Disco to size of rotors.
Then same with BMW. you will see why Disco's pull up so well....

Anyhow they stop good.
