The Disco (and even Rangie) sales slumps may be explained by people waiting for a new Disco3.
The Defender slump (and the others) - probably something to do with the fact that LR do bugger all advertsign / promotion etc. I mean it doesn't take a genius....
I read the car section of the paper every week - ALWAYS Jeep ads in there and usually most other makes as well.
I have NEVER seen a Land Rover ad. Not once. People could be forgiven for not considering them or even knowing they exist.

I think that LR's problem is the lack of updates. The defender has remained relatively unchanged, excluding the move to TD5, for over a decade. The disco about the same, the move to TD5 (series II), only changed the engine and the enlarged the interior space a little. People want a regular progression and regular improvements. They now need replace the Freelander, Range Rover and Defender with vehicles as good as disco 3. Given this, i think that Land Rover sales will increase. Matt

I think, that if ford has started to get on top of the build quality issues, people will see this in the Disco 3 and faith will be resored in the next new models. Matt

I'm living in hope. I would have thought the Germans and BMW could have changed it around. If they couldn't who can. Perhaps it was just a Poms won the war and they didn't thing.

BMW didnt care about the brand, they bought the company with the plan to off load it some time later after they had stolen all the technology LR were developing. They only worked on the TD5 and the new Range Rover to improve the company enough to value add it slightly for the sale. Matt

Lack of advertising seems to be a major issue, and they are more expensive than their "compeditors" in the market place. The quotes are because they compare the disco to the likes of the prado and pajero, although I can't speek for the prado, I had the "pleasure" of driving a pajero for a month reciently and it is not in the same class of vehicle as the disco by a long shot.
As for the defender, I think that if they were more progressive in their design and models etc it would be more damaging for sales!! In its current form it is a regular reliable workhorse......thats what I want anyway.....
cheers

All good points, but the disco 3 is aimed at the cruiser and patrol, now it is alot bigger, and the prices of cruisers are very high, and you dont get the package you get with the Disco 3.
I agree the defender should always remain the same. In concept only, and look to some extent. You can keep the image and the functionality of the defender without ruining the no frill work horse image everyone likes. Ie, keep live axles, dont add terrain response, make front and rear diff locks standard etc. But the interior needs major work etc. Given this the defender would be a force to be reckoned with. Matt

Ace, Disco I totally agree......just got to push the advertising barrow, as to the defender, I'd love standard diff locks, but the only interior mods I'd like is an improvement in the A/C ducting, otherwise I think that simplicity is the way to go. I realy don't think that there is that much they can do to the interior without making it to "soft"...loosing the ability to hose it out etc.

No arguements from me there, i forgot the ad thing, they need to do more of that for all models, a back cover add on some magazines is hardly enough to sell D90's. As for the interior, i cant comment on the air con because i have never been in a defender and needed to use it. But sitting in noddy's and others over time, i do agree with the ergonomics thing, it wouldnt stop me from buying one, but it has others, and 4wd Monthly chose the Cruiser over the Extreme because of it, with a more practical and comfortable interior they would have chosen it. All i would like to see, is some reshuffling. Move the seats in so there is more room next to the door. Make the seats more adjustable, including up and donw for the tallens amongst us. That sort of thing can be done with out detracting away from the hose out interior practicality. Some changes to the shape could be used to attract attention, and for the people who arent Landy fans, who might be prospective buyers to identify the new ones. I had some kids at school say to me the they dont make defenders anymore and that all the ones on the road are old ones. Not particularily a bad thing, but unfortunately Landy fans wont keep land rover a float so changes need to be made to attract new landy fans into the group. This said, it can all be done and keep the practical nature the defender has always stood for. I would hate to see the defender go all high tech and get terrain response etc, there is no substitute for good low range gearing and cross axle diff locks. Matt
