Hi everyone. Just wanting to know if there is such a model as a series 1a? Going to look at a 1958 swb and the bloke is calling it a 1a? Thanks

easiest way to tell is...
if it has flat sides it is a series I

if there is a 50mm bulge on each side just under the top of the door bottoms then it is series II

In 1958 the Series 2 was introduced. Before that, they were only Landrovers, and all Landrovers before Series 2 were retrospectively called Series 1. (the easy to spot difference is as the photos show)
There is no such thing as a Series 1a, but seeing that it is only an informal designation anyway, I suppose you can informally call a later model Series 1 a 1a, for example 88 rather than the earlier 86 or 80.
My guess however is that what is really meant is a Series 2a, although that was not introduced until 1961. There is no easy to spot difference between the Series 2 and Series 2a - the only sure way is to look at the chassis number, which has no letter suffix for Series 2 and has a letter suffix (A-H) for Series 2a.

Thanks John.
I'm hoping he means a late model series 1. He only parked it up 5 years ago as his daily driver so fingers crossed.

1958 Series 2 88 with the original 2l engine still in it is now very rare and collectible.
But as I said, my guess is that it is a Series 2a, possibly 1968!

Also the early Series 2's had the 2l engine from the series 1.

Interesting adapted tail gate on the SII/SIIa
oh that rear could belong to a sIII also...except for the hinges on the front door and the individual wiper motors...

I recently got into a debate with a guy at a clearing out sale who thought he new everything and kept referring to later series ones as 1a's...
btw in that swb s2/2a...do some s2a's have those vent knobs?
I thought they were only s2, however I do know a lot fo parts carried over for a while

Screw type controls are listed in the 2a parts book with no changeover suffix, just with the reference "alternates", suggesting they were not confined to Series 2. My memory says they changed in Australia at least, very early in Series 2a production.
In any case it is inconceivable that the change in vent control would have coincided exactly with the change to 2a, which was defined by the introduction of the 2.25 diesel.
