So I think Marine 1 just flew over my house. Yes, I know, it's technically not called Marine 1 when its unoccupied by the President, but it was definitely two dark green Sea King helicopters preceded by two V22 Ospreys flying NE from Amberley towards Brisbane about 1500ft AMSL. Probably a recce for this coming week-end's hoopla.
Noisy buggers. I guess the shenanigans are beginning. I'm off to Musgrave Park tomorrow evening to a prayer vigil with Aunty Jean Phillips, one of the local aboriginal elders. I wonder if I'll get arrested.
I also wonder how many ASIO trigger words I've inadvertently put in this post? If AULRO goes off-line then we'll know...

BTW, I thought I'd start this as a general G20 thread as there are bound to be many post-worthy curiosities over the next week or so. I suspect whomever posts a photo of Abbot vs Putin going UFC on each other will win the internet.

As long as nothing Political is posted. If someone wants to discuss the politics of it, there is a place for that, and it's not GC.

Agreed. Not looking for anything political in this thread, just peculiar or out of the ordinary.

Yeah someone at Amberley (on another forum) saw the Ospreys do their transition from normal to hover flight. Lucky bugger, but he can't take any photos while on base. Definitely the POTUS show. Not sure if a C5 full of armoured cars has arrived yet.....
First delegate ha turned up already (maybe he put it in his diary wrong) the guy from South Africa. (or is that Sud Efrica!)

Channel seven is reporting imminent invasion by a Russian task force in the Coral Sea. It consists of 2 cruisers and 2 support ships.
I bet we didn't know about Them!
That's what we get for politely asking for the Russians to tell the truth and apologise.

Quote from HERE (http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/russia-sends-warships-towards-australia-before-g20-meeting-20141112-11lc4z.html)
Defence announced late on Wednesday it is "monitoring Russian naval vessels that are currently transiting through international waters to the north of Australia".
It stressed: "The movement of these vessels is entirely consistent with provisions under international law for military vessels to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters."
Defence Force chief Mark Binskin confirmed Defence was watching the fleet. In a reference to the fact it was a considerable distance for the Russian navy to travel, he noted one of the ships was an ocean-going tug, which tows other ships.
"Their confidence? One of them is an ocean-going tug," he said. "It's just part of their operation. They are in international waters. They are allowed to do that. They are in our approaches and we will continue to surveil them with air and maritime assets."

What 500 million for a few days yes I understand some companies earn a lot. But for all of these meetings and also the olimpic games. Just have one venue for certain events. Security ensured and the stupidity of spending millions and more on venues never to be used again. Is solved This is about common sense and logistics?.

That could have something to do with the fact that corrective services has decided to move all life sentence inmates back into maximum security from prison farms. Too many were walking off reservation.

My neighbour is a driver for one of the delegations, but he hasn't told me any gossip so far.
There's a military-style camp on the hill near Maleny.
The whole thing has been made pointless by the US-China emissions agreement announced today. Compared with that, the G20 is just likely to produce a bunch of platitudes.

Did anyone see the epic fail of the Osprey's landing in Brisbane (near the Royal Brisbane Hospital)?
They chose to land in a dust bowl and the cloud of dust covered the Inner City Bypass causing traffic delays and showered the nearby golf club with dust.
I had a birds eye view from my office. The plane was that close I could see the pilot picking his nose! :D
They are a pretty impressive bit of engineering.

I have just returned from a day of volunteering at Caboolture War Bird Museum, and we have been informed that 2 police officers will be stationed here from Thursday evening to Tuesday, seems that they are worried about some of our flying exhibits doing a Kamakazi into the convention centre :o
One constable was very impressed when our P51D took to the air for an engine test (new Merlin just installed) VH-MFT aka A68-110 :)
She is one nice bird, dual seater as well,it is available for joy flights (deep pockets required).

My daughter phoned me chuckling away to report a news item (unverified!) that the US Secret Service had requested a roundabout be removed so as not to slow the US presidential motorcade tomorrow... !Well I guess it doesn't hurt to ask:eek:
EDIT: I drove SIL (partner of said daughter) to Bris. airport tonight to catch a late plane home to FNQ. In view of all the warnings about disruption etc decided to go a couple of hrs early so we arrived at the domestic terminal about 7 pm. Normally around that time the drop off/pick up lanes are congested: rudeness and aggressiveness in abundance. Seems all the rude and aggressive drivers have disappeared for a while. Peaceful drive out, minimal traffic either way from the inner city, courteous drivers at the airport... amazing!

Similar surprising lack of traffic in the CBD late this afternoon. But groups of 4-6 cops on EVERY street corner. Also mini busses full of them here and there. It felt like the police outnumbered regular people 2 to 1.

Of course Channel 7 forgot in their report about imminent invasion by the Russians, (or maybe by the accompanying US submarines), that we cunningly installed coastal defences at Fort Lytton, Fort Dennison and at Thursday Island about 130 years ago.
The cannons are still there at Thursday Island and just need a quick polish.
How about that for anticipation and preparation.
I have no doubt that our own submarine, if there is one operational, will send the Russians some pretty periscope pictures also.

Well I don't know about you lot but I have been enthralled by the whole experience..... this afternoon Channel 7 had live coverage of the arrivals.... I saw a plane land followed by a motorcade and then another plane land and followed by another motorcade, a short time later a motorcade was broadcasted which was preceeded by a plane landing...........All very exciting......

From my watching early developments of this saga on some alternate news sites, especially www.globalresearch.ca (http://www.globalresearch.ca) which will publish stuff western mainstream media will not, the Russian version seems correct. ie MH17 was shot down with bullets from a Ukrainian fighter observed close to it. Whether this was deliberate or accidental, eg misidentification is unknown. There were no reports of missiles, which both sides have or smoke produced by them being seen flying around at the time.
The western mainstream media tactic has been just to repeat the lie that the separatists and /or Russians were responsible often enough to try and have this view accepted. Meanwhile, what incriminating evidence is being hidden with the air traffic control and black box recordings not being publicly released? Are other dodgy details such as why MH17 was sent over a combat zone and why has USA not supplied any info obtained from their satellites above the area.
I saw somewhere, possibly checking www.pravda.ru (http://www.pravda.ru) that apparently the Russian embassy in Canberra had received calls from Australians apologising for Tony Abbott's behaviour. It is a very serious matter being blamed for an atrocity if the accusation is false. Not surprising if their latest naval exercise is a publicity exercise against bullying type behaviour.

Thank You.
I read this report, very detailed, & very much in line with what I heard immediately after this disaster.
Russian voices (identified & NOT denied by the persons) recorded immediately after the event ADMITTED shooting down a passenger plane, so why would anybody want to apologize to Putin?
As Tony has said, the U.S. made a similar error, admitted it, & paid compensation,...not that this makes it any better.

IMO both cases were a criminal act and apologies are not enough.
There is a BIG difference between both cases (until proves other ways) the Iranian plane was brought down in Iranian air space by USA arm forces under the instructions of a USA commander.
The Malaysian plane, so far by the allegations said that it was brought down by Ukrainian separatists using Russian made weapon.
If that it is the case the Ukrainian separatist should made the apology not Russia or Putin.
If some one has to brought to justice for the criminal acts, the the Ukranian separatist and the USA commander should face it.

I understand that it is believed the missiles were operated by a Russian crew supporting the separatists, hence Moscow's responsibility.
But back to G20, big day today

It would be nice if this ridiculously expensive hardware actually worked, for a change.

I love the contrast between the behaviourof the leaders. The US president arrives on a huge plane, transfers to a very cool twin rotar chopper and then to a 30 vehicle motorcade. Meanwhile the Italians arrive in a single car. And, even better, German chancellor Merkel went to a pub and had a beer with some people. What a great contrast!

I've loved the G20. As a courier who despises going near the city it was for a few days very easy to find parking almost anywhere.
Friday was a public holiday, eldest daughter and I left at 2:30 am for an easy drive down to Byron Bay for the day. Had a great day in Byron and then drove home late afternoon. There were a few slow points northbound, but nothing compared to traffic heading out of Brissie.
I live north of Brisbane, didn't use expensive Gateway bridge, and did not stop once from Brunswick heads through city to home. Every traffic light in our favour, hardly any traffic and that was heading through city at what would normally be peak traffic.
Loved the G20

I too try to avoid the Gateway tolls, and use Kingsford Smith Drive, Ann St and Story Bridge when travelling to the south side of Brisbane.
I was at Caboolture Warbird Museum this morning,2 x police cars, one patrolling the field and around the hangers, the other parked up,there was nothing moving in and around the field,I presume most owners of light aircraft to worried to go up,fearing interception and forced landings, also nothing flying around our home either, as usually there are aircraft from Redcliffe doing training flights, most Saturdays and Sundays.

We went on a SLOw club trip last weekend to Toogoolawah last weekend in my "zara" series III, hence slow up big hills around 90 k's on flat:)
Was heading towards Wivenhoe dam and pullover to let a semi past, several white vans pulled out of the Picnic area. Next thing all these white vans pulled over on the Dam wall and vehicles had to cross double whit line to get past them. On driving past we noticed they had G20 number plates and there was a sedan up front, obviously they were reforming into convoy. I go past and then they all took off behind me :D Now not to break up the convoy they wouldn't over take had to sit behind me all the way to Esk, where we stopped for lunch. You should have seen the line of cars behind.
So "zara" has led a G20 convoy into Esk:D

I heard a report that the Brisbane airspace has been declared off limits to GA movements from Friday to Mon morning, including Caboolture, and even the Care Flight and RFDS are having to get special authority. We live close to the city with a "deck" view direct to the Mater children's Hosp (about 4km away) ...have seen no helos approaching for the past 48hrs...which is unusual...
Must admit, I was quite impressed with the Ospreys which flew over the house at 6.30am today in helicopter mode towards the city...then about 45 mins later with props in the vertical they were hell for leather towards Amberley... great stuff:D

Went to the airport at midday yesterday and it was very quiet. Was a big American aircraft at the terminal. It could have been the backup presidential plane. Around thr back of he airport were several unusual passenger jets, including ones from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
The Gateway was toll-free yesterday.
We're avoiding the whole thing by staying home and hiding in the aircon as its predicted to be 40 today. Might go to the local pool.

Yesterday afternoon when President Obama flew out I'm sure they had a drone up there. We had Marine 1 & it's escort fly directly over at 1000ft AMSL, two Hornets flying top cover for most of the afternoon, Pol-air stationed somewhere over Moggill/Riverview, and then this anonymous, propeller driven thing with a very wide, straight wingspan traveling extremely slowly back and forth about 2500-3000ft AMSL. Must have been a drone.

What I heard wasn't a UAV. Crossed between a P51 and a jet for sound. Roar of a jet with a high pitched metallic whine. We have most ADF craft overhead at some time or another and I have done a bit of time on helicopter picquet, it was a new sound to me.;)
Your UAV description sounds like Heron. Not surprising really.
