Ok, looking for some info here, am taking apart the axles and I have come across a snag, there's a nut the size of my head in there holding things together and I have no spanner large enough, would anyone know the size of this nut so I can find me a large enough socket?

It's a series 2a front axle, just after the castle nut on the shaft there's a giant one held tight with a bent washer, sadly due to the rain I have no picture of it but am figuring there can't ge that many giant nuts on the axle lol.

Thanks in advance

Ok I may be well off the msrk here but it sounds like the hub nut your talking about, while I have no experience with series vehicles, on a D1 that nut is 52mm

Since the Series Landrover, and the Jeep that standardised on this nut size, used Imperial measurements, the size is actually 2 1/16" - but they are commonly sold as 52mm.

Thanks all! Shall trawl the aisles at the local hardware places for something this size

I'm sure I've seen a 54mm tube spanner in Autobarn (it was a cross between a tube spanner & a socket, bar with 1/2" square hole welded across one end). Must be for a Japanese 4WD but is close enough and won't cause damage to the nuts.

Common to the front axle of the Blitz and Ford V8 sump plug too.

And early Landcruiser and probably Patrol and other Jeep knock-offs.

Jeep use an eight sided nut, the same as the rear of the Blitz.

The rrc and disco use a tube spanner the same size as hot water cylinder elements. Do you know any sparkies?

Sadly I know few people of any trade, I know a mechanic but he is away for a month on holiday.. Lucky bugger

The search around hardware stores extended to places like supercheap etc but sadly none of them carry anything remotely large enough. Looks like an Internet order which is annoying because I wanted to do it today and tomorrow, looks like my plans have been thwarted yet again!

Progress!

Turns out that getting annoyed and hitting it with a hammer has led me to discover that the nuts were not actually that tight, still need a spanner for when I put them back on but at least I can make some headway today

Thanks all for the swift responses, I'll likely order one online to tighten everything up.

Ended up tapping the very edge of the nuts with a hammer/chisel and they appear to move very easy without damaging the nut, not ideal but better than spending a day trimming the front hedge or fixing the back fence.

While not recommended they can be put on and off with a cold chisel. I have replaced a few that had been done that way.

There are actually two nuts there with a lock washer. If you do take them off it is always a good idea to replace the lock washer that is bent up and down between the two nuts. At the very least make sure you use a piece of the washer to bend that has not previously been bent when you put them back on. It's not a good idea to have these nuts come off and they are only tightened enough to load the bearings, not enough to stay on without the lock washer.

If you have to buy new washers then you might as well get the correct spanner from the parts supplier anyway :). Any early Landrover parts supplier should have new seals, lock washers and even the nuts and spanners.

Cheers,

You just posted that while I was writing mine :). It looks like you only have one nut and there should be two with the washer in between. That would in my opinion be quite dangerous.

The famous amphibious Jeep "Half Safe" had only one nut.

That is a subject worthy of a thread on it's own Brian. I had never heard of that and have just bought the book by James Nestor from I-books so I can read about it. Thank you!

However, I still think it would be best to have the two nuts that were designed to be used on the Landrover :).

Cheers,

Also of concern in the picture is the missing wheel from the jack.
I wonder if you need an even smaller jack to replace it.......?

The wheel isn't missing... It's just not attached any more, silly cheap jack.

It would be awesome to borrow mathernet, did you want to send a pm with address details so I can pick up or you drop off, though I worry about people seeing my work a bit due to lack of skill and embarrassment lol
