View Full Version : Too Good To Be True Or?

I have been doing the rounds looking for my next Land Rover and found this ad for a 2005 05MY Defender (http://www.carsguide.com.au/cars-for-sale/CG_3325595/used-2005-LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-110-%284X4%29-MY05-Manual-Diesel-SUV-in-SYDNEY,-NSW-2000.html)with 92K for $15,800.

I found it too good to be true, seller doesn't want phone contact and gives the VIN, as does an ad for a later model 90 at under $17K that seems to have been removed. My research on Carsales.com.au found two similar vehicles, a 2005 03MY with 93K for $31,500 and a 2006 Extreme with 165K for $25,800. Could this be simply the bargain of the century, or...? Your thoughts?

Something could be terminally wrong? hard to believe at that price.

Or he might just want to sell it very very quickly?

Make a contact and do an inspection asap.

Seems VERY suspect.

I think this is the original ad 2005 Land Rover Defender 03MY (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Land-Rover-Defender-2005/SSE-AD-3039182/?Cr=2&sdmvc=1) (Same photos and rego) the carguide one has 'cloned'

That's the one! I knew I had seen it somewhere else. I might let the seller know. It has to be bodgy but is it Carsguide poaching/cloning ads to boost their offerings or has someone else nicked it and is going to 'sell' it by getting money up front? The clone ad offers free delivery Australia wide, sounds too good to be, oh, I've used that line already.

Sounds far too good to be true.

A 2006 Extreme? No such thing as far as I know. Although the later ones (and I have a 2006) had TC, ABS and electric windows, they were never badged Extreme.

I've reported that car/seller to eBay several times over the last couple of months. And again.

What is the scam - I assume the seller is hoping someone will buy unseen and pay before they go to collect the car.

Some adds are just baits...... you ring to make an appointment to view the car, go to the car yard, the seller apoligises but someone came in and paid cash and took delivery etc etc while you were on your way here............. "But now that your here come over here and have a look at this little beauty", pretty lame but one of the tried and true methods to get people on to the lot

The more I look into this, the more bodgy ads I find. Mind you, you can buy a lot of P38 HSE for five grand these days! Even 2001 Rangies going for $20K and legit. Now, that's five to buy and fifteen to get registered and another ten the first year and...

Or am I being unfair? Might be worth a new thread!

I would have thought that would be enough to turn you right off them :).

I sold a few, including several Autobiography's. I also remember trading them in 2007. We'd try and get the car up the ramp to the car park before all the red lights came on. I'd love to be able to afford one for just getting around town in and the odd hard 4WD club day, bash the hell out of it and remember how these were hundred grand plus cars back in the day.

I must be a bit slow. I don't understand this?

The P38 has a lot of warning lights on the dash and when traded it was a standing joke to see how many of them would be on. The general condition of the average trade meant there were usually at least three, guaranteed.

I thought you were long gone from TC by then.

No, I went back there for a few months but it was disappointing. I started with the mindset I was set for life. Selling Land Rovers again and making a good living. But they only took me on to sell used ones (and used Peugeot, Volvo and Jaguar). I found the second hand stock was too close to new car prices and I kept upselling people to new ones, but of course that meant the new guys got the deals/ I just couldn't, in all conscience sell someone a used Land Rover for a few grand short of a new one if they could get the money for the new one with full warranty, no kms and of course a current plate etc.

While I was there I decided to become a full-time student for a year and get my Masters in Writing. Then I got very ill with a major heart problem and basically stayed 'self employed' ever since until last October when I took a marketing job to even out the cashflow over the hols. I swore if I got a 'real job' I'd buy another Defender, preferably brand new but the job doesn't pay enough, so I'm rapt with a good 300 Tdi, owned outright.

Would I go back to selling Land Rover? I doubt it. The brand has changed along with the customer base. I would sell second hand ones in an all Landy yard, but the weekend work sucks. I will boast I am proud to say there are more than 200 Land Rover owners out there I could sit around a campfire with, knowing I gave them a fair deal and a great vehicle.
