Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has converted s2a from railco to bearings at the top swivel housing?

Only question is why would you want to do this?

Twas just a thought. I have a few now and then:angel:. Would like lighter steering tho:p. Think I read something on a pommy forum or might have been a yankee forum. A one liner I think, it was mentioned in a sentence somewhere:confused:. Caught my eyes.

Lack of friction damping at the swivel is likely to result in wobble problems. It won't necessarily if everything is just right. If the aim is simply to reduce steering effort, you can simply reduce the preload, but expect to have to adjust it fairly frequently.
Main way to reduce steering effort is to ensure you are not using wider than standard tyres, and that tyre pressures are at or above recommended. Assuming of course that relay damping is correct; seeing that most of the frictional damping is from the steering relay, changing the swivel damping will make very little difference to overall effort, even if it is reduced to zero.

1948 Land Rovers had tapered roller bearings top and bottom but no steering damper, these were changed to cone and cup then later railco bearings by Series IIa.
Range Rover have had tapered roller bearings top and bottom and a steering damper from day one.
If you ask Cookey he will tell you to convert as it is something that he has done on his own vehicles.
The down side to tapered roller bearings is if you spend a lot of time on corrugated roads you will find brinelling of the bearing will occur. However these days very few of us spend a signifficant time on corrugated roads.

BTW: I was looking at Cookey's first batch of 20 finished disk brake calliper brackets yesterday, he was in the process of machining hubs and rotors when I last saw him on Sunday.
