View Full Version : How do I get that V8 burble sound?

Hi everyone - my 02 Vogue 4.6 is running great with the replacement transmission...averaging 14-16L/100km.
The damn thing is so smooth and quiet, which is great...but I really want to hear that V8 burble. Mine has the single exhaust on both sides...what are the ones with the twin exhaust pipes on both sides?
Any sensible suggestions for an exhaust upgrade? On my Puma 90 I replaced the rear muffler with a TF straight through pipe and got a much better sound, and wee felt lift in performance.

Is the burble related to firing order?
The Rover V8 firing order is: 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2
The Ford V8 (except 351) is: 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8
Ford 351, 5.0, 5.4, 5.8 litre : 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8
Dodge and Chevy V8 are, apparently, the same as a Rover.

Get one of those sound generators that some new vehicles have, then you can have any sound you like :D

Mine burbles and growls beautifully. Get yourself a sportier exhaust. Too much muffling going on.

TTBOMK, all clevelands (302 & 351) and 351 windsors have the same firing order. Somewhere in the mid 80s the 302 windsor changed to this firing order as well. So the ring-in is the early 302 windsor motor. :D

Now I'm confused::wacko: RAVE has mine (4.6) as 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
The 5L Holden V8 in my 1993 VP Commodore had a magnificent rumble esp. idling up a steep driveway  The later VX LS1 had a different firing order which had nowhere near the appeal of the 5L.

Hang on...;) was referring to "burble"... I had both at one time or another... in terms of acceleration and sheer exhilaration the LS1 was amazing... for noisy boulevard cruising and "waking" car alarms in underground carparks the 5L was "excellent"
The difference was most noticeable recently watching the Touring Masters on the TV with Bowe's TransAm Mustang in a great dice with Miedecke's Camaro. The sound was unmistakeable... deep throated guttural roar...not the higher pitched whine of today's SuperV8s....

You are right. I'd copied the info down onto a margin in a newspaper - I didn't have a notepad with me. Because the margin was narrow, I copied the next bit of data to another margin.
When I typed the Rover info into the computer, I went to the wrong margin. :(
That means my first post about this was wrong with respect to the Fords, too.
Gaaahhhhh! I'll go back and edit it.

One of these will give you a "mouse" sound at low revs and not drone at cruising speed. There are lots of sizes and variations, but they are lightly baffled mufflers.
Flowmaster Delta Flow 50 Series Muffler 2 5" Center IN Offset 2 5" OUT FLO942552 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161382808693'ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)
I had one on a RRC 3.9 . Oh I also had to put a straight through with centre void resonator on as it was a little loud with just a back hot dog.

What is a hotdog in this context?

Hot Dog is/was a brand of muffler that looked like, well, a hot dog sausage. They were popular with us boy racers in the Sixties.

A hot-dog muffler is a basic expansion chamber stlye of muffler. They are a straight through design so add very little resistance to the flow but they also dampen a lot less sound that a baffle style muffler.
People often replace the rear resonator on the P38 with a hot dog style muffler to get a little more "V8 Juice"in the exhaust
An interesting side note about them I once saw in a doco about MZ
"They first appeared in the west on Japanese motorcycles after East German motorcycle racer Ernst Degner defected to the west while racing for MZ in the 1961 Swedish Grand Prix. He later passed his knowledge to Japan's Suzuki."

My 02 has too of those little things on each exhaust...will have to get under to see what the set up is coming off after the 2 cats.

You could try replacing one on each side with a straight through pipe, I did that on my 99, took of the resonator and replaced it with a pipe
I may do the same to my 96 eventually but I have a few other things to so first !

I strongly recommend the Flowmaster if the poster wants a "v8" sound like a small block Chev at low revs. IE with a distinct beat.
All glass pack mufflers I have heard on a RV8 give a constant sound and drone at cruising revs.
To be clearer the front muffler on a RRC is replaced by a Flowmaster, and the rear resonator with an oval glasspack but with a resonance chamber in the middle.
This to me is ideal.
I haven't looked at a 38A, but the Flowmaster is the key to the beat. I just had a look at some images and some of the Y joins are TERRIBLE.
So you have 2 rear resonators but the main muffler should be the Flowmaster or of course if you really want a good beat split the exhaust into 2 pipes with a balance tube and 2 of the smaller Flowmasters.

Just this morning I put a glass pack muffler back in the centre position and removed the rear resonator,, after 4 years of just the resonator I was sick of the drone.
Totally different sound out the end too:cool:

So, +1 on the op's question, wheat about the twin exhausts? What were they fitted to, what do they sound like and where can I get one??? Or, at least the rear valence with the two cutouts. Autobiography models?

IMHO, the Rover V8 sounds better with a decent single 2.5 inch system.

That's what I've got. Had an exhaust shop put a larger centre muffler in and removed the rear one. Sounds very good, and was very cheap too.

The one that was on my car exited via downturned pipes & the bar didn't have any cutouts at all.

When I had my twin system custom made, the rear valance on the left was cut by hand (dremmel or air cutter tool) to suit the RHS. Looks original. I chose oval outlet tips, to avoid reducing the rear clearance too drastically.

I think you would lose too much back pressure with a 3" system,

3" is a large diameter for such a small V8! If it were a worked motor it'd be fine, perhaps a tad overkill on a standard motor. Unless you got a good muffler to quieten it down. It'd flow good!
Just a 2 1/2" single with high flow centre and a hot dog at the rear on mine.
Cheers

Yours sounds like a UK spec car, was it a personal import or do NZ cars differ to OZ spec?
