View Full Version : SE to HSE

I've been a little OCD about some of the switches in my 1996 SE not working, and after a stop at DPL today, I was informed that someone had replaced the indicator stalk with one out of a HSE, which has a trip computer and a speed alarm.
Apparently the SE doesn't have these fitted.
Has anyone fitted a trip computer (that shows fuel use, etc.) to an SE? How hard is it?
Aside from the sunroof (I hate sunroofs), what else does a HSE have that an SE doesn't, and is it easy to fit?

Electric leather seats.
Do you have a subwoofer.
Fog lights. Headlight wipers.
Do you have steering wheel controls?

I suspect the trip computer is part of the BECM. I wonder if it can be enabled.

I suspect the trip computer is part of the BECM. I wonder if it can be enabled.I suspect it may need to be a high line BECM, like the type required for memory seats/mirrors.
There's lots of little differences too. While I had my DSE apart recently, I fitted whatever HSE bits I could.
More footwell lights, map lights, ign switch light, puddle lights...
Still need to swap the ABS modulator & ECU to get TC & will probably fit memory seats/mirrors too.
Centre console cup holder also.

i even ask the the guys at Rover Australia about these at the time and it seems there was no set model type. some had headlight washers some had sub woofers, some had highline becms (H on the paper label) some had clarion stereo and steering wheel switches.
without modification a lowline becm cannot run electric seats, seat heaters, front foglights or possibly the sunroof, but most of the other stuff can be programmed in if fitted with the appropriate switch and wiring. but without seeing the car and working out exactly what is or isn't hidden away it is impossible to know what will work.

I think that the S could be the only RR here that might have had the low line BECM as most SEs that went through Trivetts were optioned up with fog lights.

I've got headlight wipers, and steering wheel controls.
Two misses on the seats, they're not leather, and they're not electric.
How can I tell if I have a subwoofer?

I've got a puddle light on the driver's door, not sure if I have them anywhere else. I've got map lights, and an ignition switch light also.

Would you know if the same loom is used for the SE and HSE?
If so, it might just be a case of a new BECM to get some of these things working, then I'll need to go chase some foglights and electric seats.

--Striker.You should have electric seats now. HSEs just had a position memory too.
If you need to go to the hassle of replacing a BECM, then I'd suggest being happy with what you've got now.

All manual, cloth seats, unfortunately
Changing the BECM isn't just a matter of unplugging one, then plugging the other in?

Changing the BECM is not hard but the question is does the SE have all the necessary wiring to enable the extra functions

If the SE and the HSE use the same wiring loom, there wouldn't be any issues at all. Any ideas on whether or not they do?

Manual seats & cloth trim? Sounds like a base 4.0 or 'S'.
I wonder if it was a 'special order'?

I have no idea. On the rear it says "4.0" and "SE".

Subwoofers are tucked below the shelf, rear left corner of the boot. Above the 6-changer CD player (which you may not have as well).

Its not just a matter of plug and play wrt to the BeCM. It will need reprogramming so it talks to your engine ECU. There is also issues ensuring the immobiliser and the keys work. The new BeCM will dictate what mileage shows up on your dash readout also.
There may be a way of swapping just the power board (the upper one) and reprogramming the logic board - to gain further functionality. Does your BeCM have a H or an L next to the part number?
If you're that desperate for the bells and whistles, I'd be starting off with a HSE.

I wouldn't own a HSE, I'd never own a car with a sunroof.
I do like bells and whistles, though, and if it's a simple matter of swapping in some switches, a BECM, an plugging some things in, I'll jump in with both feet.
Unfortunately, this is sounding somewhat difficult.

It might be cheaper (and easier) to simply buy the HSE and seal off the sunroof?
Personally I like the sunroof, ironically the main time it is open is at night, so I guess it's more like a moonroof than a sunroof

At one time when I was working for Telstra, I was looking at a "cheap" new P38A as a salary sacrifice car. It was about $80K. Was it an S?

I wouldn't have a sunroof if I had a choice. They are just a source of leaks and problems.

Really?!?!? Damn. Mine definitely has has a replacement or modified becm at some point, judging by the texter on it. What's the chances the odo is not kosher?

If the odo or BECM are changed, whichever has the greater distance recorded, i.e., the BECM or odo, that will be the distance used to update the one with lower distance.

To be fair, I've never had the "new car" experience, so I've never owned a sunroof in all its glory.
Every sunroof I've had, has always had, or developed, issues. Mostly leaking, sometimes rusting in the roof.
I like to keep the roof solid, the windows dark-tinted, and the aircon at 9 degrees.

Must admit, I rarely use it and wouldn't miss it, but it is nice to have on occasions. Whilst it's working. They're kind of designed to leak. Hence the drains. Touch wood.

I'd have to agree with mtb Gary nights are wonderful with an open sunroof, also just the glass and not open on a sunny cold winters day.......very warm naturally!

Descent? Nope. I arrived here on a plane. From a fantastic -30c winter, to a typical Dutch summer when I landed. Problem is nobody told me that it was the Aussie winter.

The sunroof is excellent for maintaining a reasonable temp in the vehicle when parked in the sun... with the windows cracked a cm or two, a reflective screen on the windscreen and the sunroof opened in the vent position, the temp difference can be 15-20 centigrade degrees cooler than if the vehicle was totally sealed...
Very few if any HSEs built for Aus. spec had operable heated seats and front windscreens. They can be activated I believe if the European spec HEVAC control panel/ECU is substituted for the local one... I think Glenhendry? discovered this a while back and posted the details ...

I have a feeling that the HSE wasn't the top of the range in 2001/2002.
It was basically a rebadged SE as the Vogue took over top dog status.

If it the HSE was a rebadged SE then I expect that the only differences between HSE and vogue beside minor trim items would the ones I mentioned in my prior post
The differences IMO would not be worth the increased vogue price back in 2001

The differences IMO would not be worth the increased vogue price back in 2001Probably not but the buyers of a new Range Rover in 2001 weren't thinking of the value. They're worried what their neighbours would say if they bought a model below 'top of the range'.
