View Full Version : Smaller torque wrench?

I need a decent smaller torque wrench - for use on motorcycles.

The big one I have for the Landy is really for much bigger bolts than most on the m/cycle.

Can anyone suggest a good brand and a Brisbane source. Ideally like to grab it tomorrow if possible.

Vlad, NORBAR is excellent and expensive. I paid 200 for mine 20 years ago. I'm not sure what else is available. ( Snapon?)
Small torque wrenches are not cheaper than big ones, because they not made in vast numbers.

I used it on my alloy engined cars and motorbikes, and it's money well spent, avoiding the pain and inconvience of one stripped alloy housing / helicoil repair is worth it .

Norbar or WARREN and BROWN, only way to go, I've got 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 in W and B, also got 3/8 and 1/2 in Norbar, all excellent quality

Which of the torque wrenches listed here would be most suitable for bike usage?

http://www.torquetoo...orbar.html#hand (http://www.torquetoolsupplies.com.au/norbar.html#hand)

As in drive size, and torque range?

I already have a large one for use on my 4WD but need a smaller one for bike use, (and specifically in this case the oil pan bolts and sump plug)

I should add - Jap bikes so Metric.

For more than 30 years I have used Britool torque wrenches (http://www.kltoolsaustralia.com/britool/britool-avt300a-torque-wrench-3/8in-drive.html) in a very delicate and expensive equipment.
Any of their sizes are excellent.

I'm using a couple of Norbars and love them. I'd suggest the TT50 or TT100, depending on the lightest torque setting your require.

Another Warren & Brown 1/4" tension wrench here.

Bought specifically for kart engine and auto tranny use nearly thirty years ago and still going strong.

Inhereted a 1/2" drive Ritch from the fifties that was still spot on when tested last.

Vlad, eliminate all 1/2 " drive they are too strong and too big only suitable for the cylinder head bolts or frame bolts motorbike.

My small torque wrench is 3/8 drive though I mostly use it at low torques.

I'm not at home at the moment but from my memory my small nor bar goes from 5- 45 newton /metrs. It almost reached the minimum setting of my 1/2" drive one.

I might add mostly I use it with the 3/8- 1/4 adapter, I used it on the covers of my motorbikes, rocker covers, timing cases etc on alloy V6 etc.

It will cover all your needs except maybe bottom end bolts cylinder heads , frame bolts.

cheers

Alan.

Definitely want 3/8 1/2 won't do what you want and being larger wont fit in a lot of places W&B all the way

Hmm ta the Norbars mentioned in that document start at the TT100 (no mention of any smaller ones, though I presume they exist).

Know a norbar or W&B retailer in Brisbane?

I know some people will be horrified to consider this but SuperCheap have 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4 drive torque wrenches, all around the $80 mark.
I have just bought a Gasweld 1/2 drive wrench for $45.

Thanks for that.

This one is cheaper and SEEMS that it would be OK?
Any comments on this one, and what the difference between this and the more expensive one you have is?

Vlad,
This is just my opinion. The micrometer torque wrenches that you are looking at from kincrome are part of there budget range of tools. While there's nothing wrong with them as such you would get the same standard of quality from a Supacheap wrench at half the price. And would be fine for most home use.
But really I would recommend Warren&Brown or the Kinchrome equivalent.
I've had my W&B wrench for well over 30 years and it's never needed recalibration. Britool,Snap-on, W&B ect are more expensive but there's a reason for that.
Buy the best tools you can afford IMO.

I subscribe to the buy once theory but $ are a bit tight at the moment.

I can't find a W&B or Norbar in the lower torque range 3/4 drive....

at anything near a reasonable price. I was looking at the 6+ bulk prices and that was even higher than I wanted to pay. I really cant afford $300+ for one at the moment.

I'm fascinated by the fact that a norbar TT50 can be had for 1/2 price new on ebay ex-UK. Shows how inflated prices are here.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Norbar-13658-TTI-50-Torque-Wrench-3-8-Drive-10-50Nm-/261508119958

If anyone can point me to quality tools at reasonable prices, locally that would be super fantastic.

Another Q might be- which is better for automotive applications (motorcycle mostly in mind here) - micrometer adjustment such asw the norbar linked above, or a deflecting beam type ?

landy
24th January 2015, 05:51 PM
I like deflecting beam torque wrenches. It's what I was taught to use as an apprentice and it's what I bought when I built up my tool box. Easy to read and set. Easy to calibrate. But it's probably more due to what I'm used to. If I had my time again I'd buy Britool. Very good quality.
I always thought that micrometer torque wrenches where sometimes difficult to read.
And are you after a 3/8" or 3/4". 3/4" is an ****** big wrench!:wasntme:

You don't happen to also have one that dopes the next range up of torque values?

As well as the metal hole saws you mentioned.
