Gday All,
Went and seen this movie tonight and was pretty blown away by it. Its about Chris Kyle who is credited with being the most successful sniper in USA history. He does 4 tours of Iraq.
The movie is very graphic, plenty of blood and guts and reckon it will be a very controversial movie which will get a fair share of bad publicity. This type of movie appeals to me so I found it a fantastic story and the fact that its meant to be true account of his time as a navy seal , it is a real eye opener.
I wont say much, but the ending will blow you away.
For my money 9/10. Im off to buy the book tomorrow
Cheers Ean

After surviving all that crap in Sandland Chris Kyle ends up getting shot by a civilian at a shooting range.

By coincidence I have been reading a book by Sepp Allerbeger. He was the highest scoring German sniper in WWII. Pretty amazing story. Terrifying to think how brutal the Russian Front would have been.

I heard the JJJ review today. They made some very good points about the movie being too us-centric and ignoring the bigger picture of the war.
Thoughts?

I haven't seen the film yet but have to say I am always amazed at how some media says too much US centric etc. I am 100% Australian centric myself but a fan of history. When I look at who could have been a super power I think more people should look at what could have been ...

It's a movie about one man's experience in Iraq, it's not a movie about the war in Iraq. And he was a US soldier, so it's from a US point of view. It's not a documentary and it's definitely not PC enough for easy consumption in our lobotomised society so the JJJ comments come as no surprise. They have responded how they feel they are expected to respond. They were never going to punch the air and say "man what a movie, that was great".
I thought there were enough Americans killed by the Syrian sniper to appease most critics, but maybe I under-estimated that.

Wow, Clint Eastwood did a good job meeting the expectations of his target audience I reckon. 9/10.
Considering it's a true story of a Navy SEAL (Chris Kyle played by Bradley Cooper see The A Team & The Hangover 1-3) and his personal experience, culminating in a sad and shocking death at the hand of a veteran he was trying to help, there's going to be an element of war in there...but it wasn't a war movie at all.
It's about 2hours & 20mins. Being a true story, it's very sad the way he died and the film made that point.
Interestingly in the credits there is reference to a legacy organisation where his wife Taya Kyle carries on Chris's dream to assist returning service personnel, first responders and their families, here is the link -

Chris Kyle Frog Foundation
The Foundation
When one person serves, the whole family unit serves
All too often, the support network of those serving our country either on the military frontline or as first responders (Paramedics, Fire, Police and Government Agency Officers) can be overlooked or forgotten.
The pressures that come naturally with carrying out service to our country can lead to a negative ripple effect among family units, which flows into the communities within which they serve, work and live.
The aim of the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation is to provide meaningful, interactive experiences to service members, first responders and their families, aimed at enriching their family relationships.
Chris Kyle - the author of New York Times Best Selling book American Sniper and his wife, Taya, knew all too well the issues encountered by military personnel and first responder families.
Prior to his untimely passing in February 2013, Chris had begun casting his vision for the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation to provide experiences for service and first responder families to work through many of the difficulties he and Taya had experienced post-deployment.
Taya and a dedicated team are ensuring Chris's vision, desire and legacy to the country he served carries on now and into the future.
The Chris Kyle Frog Foundation has been built on four solid pillars:
Loyalty
Empowerment
Integrity
Excellence
The experiences provided by the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation are designed to give those it is assisting the opportunity to re-connect and remember what they love about each other, thus empowering families to thrive.

Since seeing the movie I have done some reading about Chris Kyle, and he wrote the book because he was told that a unofficial story of his life was being written, so he wrote the book and all the money raised ( even his commission ) went to his charity.
The movie is the story of him, its not a story of the US war in Iraq.
Personally the guy seemed to be a very down to earth person who could see returned servicemen/women needed help after they returned and he was doing something about it.
Someone who should be admired I believe.

Yes and very sad that it was someone who he was helping that pulled the trigger. Survives 1000 days in war zones and gets killed in his own country.
On a similar note ,When I was a kid We used to live next door to a survivor of WW2 who spent time as a POW, returned home and was killed many years later from a bee sting
When your number is up .

Great Film, and a sad ending for a man who fought to protect his country.
Out rage in the states with the Muslim community wanting this film banned, as it could show anger towards them.
Cant wait for Clint to make a film about ISIS, showing rape, torture, and extreme violence on innocent people, wonder how the Islamic community would take that, or would that be the highest grossing western film in the Muslim world. Sniper is based upon a true story, what happened happened end of, If you don't like something don't watch it.

Haven't seen it yet, but looking forward to it.:) There was a sniper movie brought out several years ago called "Enemy at The Gates" about the battle of Stalingrad and the battle of wits between the Russian sniper and the German sniper brought in to kill him. Also a true story as the sniper rifle used by the Russian is (I believe) in a museum in Russia. I thoroughly enjoyed that movie and have it on DVD.

very historically inaccurate, but one of my favourite light war films.
