PTO winch questions

My truck came with a winch but no cable, I have managed to get the drum turning and will source some cable in the next few days.
But am i able to drive under winch or will I just have to drag myself out of trouble disengage winch then drive away?

Hi Ben, you can use any gear you like including reverse while you are using the pto. Low gear + low range is excellent for assisting the winch pulling yourself out of a bog etc. Then you can throw the transfer in neutral and retrieve the cable with 4th gear if you want. Very versatile and you can use it all day - unlike the electric jobbies.

Leads me to my next question, how much cable and what diameter are people using??

I guess it's a thomas pro. With mine I can fit about 70-80mm 8mm wire rope or about 50m of 10mm dyneema.

According to Dave's buyers guide (which you should buy, even if you already own a Perentie) both the 4x4 and 6x6 came with 45m of 11mm steel cable.

For some reason I thought the 4x4 came with 10mm and the 6x6 came with 11mm. Someone might be able to clarify this..

The ropes were originally different but to simplify supply when the cost of the 6x6 rope dropped to the same as the 4x4 rope if you mangled the rope on a 4x4 then the 6x6 rope was provided as the replaceement

Can I fit dyneema/synthetic rope to the ribbed drum on the PTO..??

You can probably fit Dyneema to the drum, but I'm not sure how it will go with the rollers.

I can't see a reason why Dyneema would not work on the winch. But (as Aussie Jeepster said) the rollers might be an issue. The original concern with Dyneema was that winches with braking systems that got hot might melt it, but I don't think that applies to a PTO winch?

Most winches sold with Dyneema don't use rollers, just a smooth alloy oval fairlead system, because synthetic rope runs over polished alloy very well. Because it can flatten, if it finds a gap in the corner of the rollers it might fall in, but as long as there is lots of overlap between the horizontal and vertical it would probably be fine...... But make sure the rollers are nicely polished, if they're rough from wire rope scoring them they might slice the Dyneema up!
