View Full Version : Dammit! Suspect water pump!

Dammit, I am getting a pool of coolant under my D2 most mornings - maybe 1/3 or 1/2 cup. A quick look seems to indicate the coolant coming from higher up the left side of the engine. I'll bet it's a water pump!
Being currently in the middle of a move to Melb and living in temp accommodation, I have no tools or even a place to work on it until I secure an apartment and have my stuff delivered.
Even then, I only brought a basic tool kit with me, so I may just be able to do it in a high rise car park:(.
I may need to call on the generosity and kindred LR spirit of you Melb folk in the next couple of weeks if anyone could assist with a workspace and a few tools maybe. I am currently in temp accom in Laverton in the western burbs.
Time to start sourcing a pump.
Cheers
Ralph

Don't mean to be too Sherlock Holmes on this, but.... if it is the water pump, you will see leakage from the tell tale hole, on the bottom of the pump. Is the leakage the colour of your coolant. You would know the air conditioning drain leaks condensation to ground. Normally on the right hand side, but many people shift it to the left, so it doesn't drip on the front Carden shaft, creating a problem there. Does your coolant overflow tank level drop equal to your fluid drop under the vehicle. Simple things first. Bob

Laverton! Yeah, I'm sure there will be a few around who would be able to help.
I can't over the next couple of weeks. After that, I have a few tools.

And i dont mean to be Watson , but Air con drains on both sides I,m pretty sure , Bob
Ralph1 malph, hopefully someone has fitted a jubilee clamp and it has just come loose. You can always try optimism.

If the aircon drains are leaking coolant he has serious problems.

Yeah , would probably indicate a heater core , but can't see where anyone has mentioned this on this thread...........
Anyhow , Ralph 1 Malph have you had a closer inspection yet ?
hopefully might be just a loose jubilee clamp on bottom hose passengers side.

Thanks All,
I have secured an apartment and hopefully move in this weekend. Still may need to visit someone with 'space' tho.
I have with me in the car a set of screw drivers, a 3" shifter and a pair of Suzuki pliers:p:D so I have yet to conduct a detailed look.
I have pulled the plastic cowling/shield from underneath behind the wombat bar and shone a torch up there. I can only see the dribble marks about half way up the block as my torch is also sub par. I did manage to rule out the lower hoses at least the obvious ones.
When my tool kit arrives, I'll pull the air intake and have a good look from the top in good light.
Yes, I would surmise that the amount lost is similar to the amount I top up the overflow reservoir with.
Cheers

If your not going to Wandin Sunday and want to wander up my way yell out.
All the work is done in the drive but we can at least have a look and identify where the leak is.
I've got clamps here if that's all it is.

I've got a cooling system pressure tester if you think that would help.

A pressure test would be great!
I might wait until I am settled in (next few weekends or so) then make some plans.
If my camping stuff is delivered by Sat arvo, I'll be going to Wandin on Sat arvo for a few coldies and staying over. If not, I'll make the day trip Sunday.
Cheers

The game is afoot, Watson. The A/c drains on the right hand side , normally. A mod is to switch the drain to the left, so as not to have water dripping on the front drive shaft. The devious Moriarty designed that , I'm sure, Bob

Air con drains can not leak coolant. I am suggesting that the leakage under the vehicle is from the A/C, not the coolant system. Any one who has a D2 will know you always have a puddle of water under the vehicle when stopped, from the A/C . The water pump has a tell tale hole, where if the seal is cactus, coolant will leak out. First thing, check the tell tale hole. There has been no indication so far of whether the coolant level is going down proportionate to the water under the vehicle. Bob

Have a look in behind the turbo at the little hose, a known leaker.
This hose towards the rear of the motor, water pump is at the front behind the power steering pump.
When the motor is cold have a look for a coolant stain.
Often the remnants will disappear once the motor heats up.
