View Full Version : Mystery wire identification

Hi folks. I'm hoping someone can identify the loose wire I found hanging underneath my TD5 this afternoon. It seems to originate from up behind the transfer case? Doesn't seem right, just hanging there...
Its marked by the red arrows in the top quality iphone photo attached.

Yep. All lights are functioning as normal.

Looks like the difflock light cable, is that working?

That could be it. I'll check today.

No. Difflock light is working. Should there be a light for low range?

There isn't a low range light, but there is a high/low range switch to tell the ECU which throttle mapping to use.

Don't think that's it, thanks.

My guess is it is off the handbrake.

Yeah, it could be. Hand brake light is working though.

Its on the wrong side though.

I just crawled under my 130 as I don't remember a wire like this in my recent clutch install. I don't have one. I have a loom in black conduit running in this location from above the gearbox to the back but nothing like what you have.
Does the handbrake light work on the handbrake? It will also operate on low brake fluid.

What year is ur Td5? Defender or Disco? I will have a crawl under my fender later and have a look.

The handbrake light is on when first starting but goes off with the other lights, before disengaging the brake. Could be the problem?

Thanks mate. It's a 99 Defender.

If pulling the handbrake on and releasing has no effect on the warning light, then that is probably the culprit. The light should be on whenever the handbrake is on. What you see at start up would be the self-test for the bulb.

The other obvious question would have been what the wire colours were, and look it up on RAVE to find where it should go.

Bingo. Thanks mate. Now I just have to find where it connects on the handbrake. Shouldn't be too hard.

Ok, so I think I have found where your wire connects. I too have a Defender Td5 99. I put the thing on ramps, grabbed my phone and snapped a couple pics. Now lets see if I can post these pics...

A. I cannot tell by your picture, but does it join this bunch?

B.

C. I followed the wire (which looks like yours) and this is what I found.

D. And this is where the other part of the wire comes out of the body work. It can be found above the T/C on the right hand side above another pipe.

Hopefully this helps... and is the right wire... Haha. It was the only one in that area. I am so glad I got the high pressure hose out a couple days ago and gave the underbody a good wash! :D

Thanks Scotty! That's above and beyond mate. Definitely the right wire and should put me on the right track.
