As a defence against shopping trolleys/car doors etc,has any one fitted part VPLAP0013, which I believe is the door strip for a D3,to a D4.They look the same to me, but have been told by one supplier they will not fit....where as another says they will?

Can't answer your question about the part numbers but I have a pretty strict routine at shopping centers.
First, my wife drives the old car (sorry but she's a touch parker- always has been- always will be)
I never park "down" the hill.
I never park anywhere near the trolley bay
I try to wait in the car if possible while others go and get whatever we are there for
If I cant get a spot I'm happy with, I try to park next to cars that are expensive and look well kept
I have been known to "abort" the mission if none of the above are satisfied
I put it in off road height plus Llams +50mm

I've installed VPLAP0012 on my D4 - which is the same thing as VPLAP0013 - without the "bling"! :D

I have the rubber strips fitted and based upon some of the marks I have seen on them, I am sure they have saved a few minor issues.
Take careful note of lpj's comments about where you park!
Have prescribed to that style of parking myself but there is always the the potential for the weird and wonderful at a shopping centre.
I have been the victim of a driver reversing, whilst yelling at their kids in their car, missing a number of other parked vehicles crossing the entirety of the carpark then hitting my D4 fair in the middle of the bull bar!
What a feat of demonstrated reversing skill!
Anyhow a new paint job on the roo bar thanks to the insurance company plus a new front number plate and all is good again!:)
A picture of my vehicle with the strips is attached and sitting in a carpark far enough away from the shopping trolly's is attached::wasntme:

As Jonesy has noted; VPLAP0012 is the black rubbing strip and VPLAP0013 is the rubbing strip with the chrome insert. From LR's website these are the part numbers shown for both Discovery and Discovery 3.
I had the VPLAP0012 colour coded before fitting (twice). The first time fitted they swapped the front ones over and the difference in long edge chamfers annoyed me (Pic 1); so the panel shop ordered new ones and when I had these fitted I asked for them to be positioned higher (pic 2), as I believed they would be more effective. I tried to get him to line them up with the rear body line, which was also the most outer tangent of the doors arc. To be fussy re. looks (IMO), I reckon they are about 1/2" too high.

Mungus the height of the trims you ended up with is spot on for contact with a D1 doors.Smaller cars such as my daughters Laser seem to contact lower down, approximately 250mm up from the top edge of the lower plastic trim.So I will have a go at fitting at this height.
I went cheaper than genuine, bought Bearmach VLAP0013 but the cut on the front piece is acute to follow the wheel arch, it will still do the job.Pity because I could have got them for a bit more from Land Rover Discovery 3/4 Side Body Moldings / Rubbing Strips (http://www.powerfuluk.com/products/land-rover-discovery-3-exterior/land-rover-discovery-3and4-side-body-moldings--rubbing-strips.html)

Leaving the D4 at normal height, we have managed to avoid a lot a damage in shopping centre car parks. The strips definitely help, but if you leave the vehicle up, the sidesteps also take some of the punishment.

An argument for selecting off-road height before parking????

Mungus the height of the trims you ended up with is spot on for .....
When I decided on a different (hopefully) more protective height, I found that no matter what height I chose, it was the rear doors of different car makes that would still make contact regardless, due to the rear wheel arch shape. I actually much prefer the look of these strips at the original designed position. It makes the gap between the strip and the flat on the door bottom before the sill mould look balanced.

Mungus, did you just get a local paint shop to paint them by giving them the LR colour number? I assume you can't buy them already colour coded. Do you just stick them on yourself?
Cheers,

Scott,
I got the dealer to organise for me. Local paint shop who is authorised repairer of BMW to name a few. They only come in black. You could quite easily stick them on yourself, but I got them to do it. First time as part of the dealer sale and second time due to the initial incorrect fitting. Any paint shop would be able to colour code if you gave them the paint code, or you could do it yourself with a S/Cheap touch-up spray can made from the paint code. Just clean the door panels really well and use sticky tape or similar to provide an alignment guide. The instructions that come with them are pretty easy to follow regarding measured alignment, correct application of pressure etc... If you were to take them off after fitting, say to correct alignment, they will end up have flat spot indentations in them (like the bottom plastic on Playdos door panels) which is why I asked him to order new ones.
