View Full Version : What else can happen?

Ah, so where do I start with my Disco? Seems as though as soon as one problem is fixed, another crops up. We've had this car a month now. On top of a service, we've replaced the power steering hose, rocker cover gasket, and an o ring in the fuel cooler (my very first post was about that - asking if the OAT coolant smells like rotten egg if you have a leak. I'm going to say it does. Gave the engine bay a good clean and the smell went). And now it's needing the sump gasket replacing. We noticed it was weeping, after we serviced it of course. We thought the oil underneath was just a result of the rocker cover gasket. We were really hoping this would hold off until at least close to the next oil change. It didn't :( I keep telling myself that these are all things that wear out over time, and it was all bound to happen given the guy we bought her from just did short runs in her (Daisy, she's managed to get stuck with the name Disco Daisy!) for the few months before we bought her and now we regularly do 300km round trips with her but I'm also praying we didn't get a lemon. Please tell me we didn't get a lemon! We found a UK website that has been a fantastic help with everything though, very informative.

Look on the bright side - taking the sump off means you can check the oil pump bolt while you're there :).
Oops, you did know about the bolt, didn't you?;)

Haha! Yeah, we bought one just in case we needed it!

Ha.
If that's the worst problems you get then you've got a good one.
Ask Strangy on here about how bad they can get.
3 Amigoes, Auto oil cooler hose and oil pump bolt (destroying the engine in the process) in the space of about a minute. Literally.
THAT'S how bad they can get
As Scouse said, good opportunity to check the oil pump bolt while you're there.

You must never ask that question in the presence of your or anyone elses landrover.
it will invariably then demonstrate just exactly what else could go wrong by promptly having it go wrong.
its a lot like, Smile it could be worse so you smile and things get worse

You shouldn't ask what could go wrong around here :)
Plastic dowels, auto transmission dying, fuel hose above fuel tank, injector washers, leaking sls (power steering hoses, sump gasket and oil pump bolt gave been covered :)), leaking power steering pump, cam inspection plug leaking and other oil leaks, manifold warping and other mechanical issues etc etc. Bottom line is any car can have issues. Stress less and just tackle issues when and if they arrive ;). Life's too short to sweat the small stuff and although I'm sure it's a pain in your first month if ownership, it will get better!
And I'm sure you're referring to urban panzer's discovery 2 uk site. Very helpful indeed.

Considering these vehicles age now (12 to 17 years old) it is to be expected that a lot of rubber based items will fails (SLS airbags, gaskets, seals, hoses, bushes, etc.) just based on the age - even if you bought a low km vehicle. It's a second hand car, you should be expecting a level of this - although it is annoying when it happens one at a time rather than multiple things at once which allows you to take it off the road, repair and then get back to driving...

Yeah, I can't say I'm surprised that it's all happening. My partners XR8 is the same age ('03), and my horse float is too, and both of them have started needing repairs.
The Disco2 site has been a huge help. And I'm pretty sure I've seen posts on here with photos of that Disco. Basically has talked us through step by step.
She's a good car. I'm feeling more confident after chatting to a friend last night who has a Defender. He reassured me of it all.
But the coffee break is over. I must go back to playing TA. Good learning experience this is!

Doesn't sound like too much wrong at all!
I did not use my TD5 much at all for the first 18 months and found everything leaked. Now all fixed and used as a daily car I quite like it, although never as good as the V8!
Cheers, Jerry
