Opinions / knowledge please.

Will an 86 inch fit into an 8x5 trailer? I can drop the front tailgate down for a touch more length, the rear tailgate will have to be up as the number plate is on it.

Thanks.

Ideally you need a 10 x 5 or could get away with an 8 x 5 if it has front opening gate as well as the rear tailgate open.

The problem is that the front spring mounts usually hit the front loading board, meaning that the rear wheel will be off the back deck of an 8' trailer. Having the tailgate up causes similar problems to a fixed loading board, although you could have sleepers or something under the wheels to lift the springs above the tailgate. An 86" with one closed end on a trailer needs at least 8' 3" of deck.

Remember that you need at the entire footprint of both tyres to be on the deck of the trailer and that will probably still mean that the trailer is tail heavy.

You could always remove the numberplate and wire it onto the trailer for the trip!

It sounds like width would be OK, just length is a potential issue.
When the front tailgate is dropped it is still fixed to the trailer, and lays on the draw bar, effectively giving a longer bed to the trailer. I could load either forwards or backwards, depending on what gives the best weight distribution, which also depends on how much other stuff I load in with the car.

That summary doesn't take into account the "footprint" of the tyres on the road/trailer, nor the wheel/tyre in front/behind the wheelbase. i.e. the footprint of an 86" is about 90" (7'6") when considering the tyres.

As I said above this minimum length also ignores the presence of suspension components that may foul on the trailer.

We also have to consider if the trailer is a metric 5' which is only 1500mm wide (instead of 1524mm of a true 5' trailer). The metric 5' will likely be too narrow for the Landy track.

I will be measuring it when I get home.

Jon, is it possible to temp attach the rear number plate to the trailer without the tailboard? wire it on or something just for the journey? May make life easier?

Anything is possible. I could probably attach the entire tailgate from the trailer to the back of the Land Rover if needs be. Then my only concern would be a number plate light.

Inside measurement of width is 1520mm. It will be close!

Probably depend on what brand of tyres!

My 80 in just fits on my 8x5 but I need to put timbers under the wheels for the free wheeling hubs to clear the sides.. If you can drop the front gate and put some timbers down to sit the front wheels onit, yours will fit.. Chain it on at 4 points and your away..

Next thing will be to figure out how to get it onto the trailer. I suspect I might have to get a tilt tray to load it for me.

I have found wheel ramps/stands, the ones you use in your workshop, can be of use under planks to take some of the weight while you load the vehicle inside. Have even used the ramps without planks when the situation allows, like backing the trailer into a kerb to load.

The 86 doesn't run... No winch on the trailer, being a box trailer.

That's when I use the tirfor, simple push pull lever mechanism, very good control.

Don't have one of them either.

It fitted. Needed to get a it of angle iron to reinforce the front drop down tailgate on the trailer, other than that no issues at all. I have a few pics I will post later.
