I have bought a new D90 to sit alongside my TD5 90.

The TD5 has been setup and used only for heavy off road and touring work and runs 285/75/16 BFG M/Ts which I really rate although they get a little noisy on the road. Old pic, it has had lots more work since, but you get the idea;

I am going to use the Puma 90 for lighter off-road and touring use as well as being city run about, and something I can use to tow my race cars. Accordingly, I am looking to get the on-road response a little better whilst not sacrificing everything when it comes to off road use. I am thinking about grabbing a set of 18x9" ET10 wheels out of the UK which are rated at 1400kg each. Given their load rating and the fact they seem to enjoy a bit of use in the Rally/Raid space by a number of teams including Bowler i figure they will be plenty tough.

In terms of tyres, I am thinking to use the newly released BFG AT K02 in 285/65/18 which is a little taller than the stock 235/85/16 (827 v 806mm), but still smaller than the MT's which are 834mm.

Any of you folks have any experience with running a wide 18" tyre on a 90?

Hi I can't , answer your question about the 18" wheels . I do know that the 265x75 x16" do rub on the inside of the tyre when articulated , the tyre rubs against the spring socket " I don't know the right term " It will damage the inside of the tyre , I understand that makes them roadworthy ! I'm saying this so you can check before you go out and spend your money !! Jim

Thanks Jim; all a function of offset. The 18*9" wheels at ET10 so I don't expect any rubbing issues.

Also, 90's don't have that issue as they have smaller spring seats, as found in Discoverys and Range Rovers.

Should fit fine :)

Get the flares painted too, that 90 in the photo with the wheels looks unreal!

have you priced up the cost of getting the 18"s shipper here?
I am wanting to do the same for my on road tyres and run steel 16s with M/T for when i actually go off the road.

Yeah - it ranged from 210 GBP to over 800GBP. The 210GBP service is "7 to 10' days transit.

I am thinking of getting the flares wrapped in white vinyl so when the inevitable occurs, I can just have it replaced without having to mess around with painting.

SKC, sorry a bit off topic but did you have any troubles running 285's with standard wheel guards and what offset did your rims have? Thanks

Pete

Hey Pete,

I would very occasionally get some minor rubbing on the guards, but only under FULL articulation. It was never a problem though. The wheels were from Les Richmond's and I think they were +25mm offset.

Thanks SKC,

Im thinking i might get a spare set just for fun in 285. Did you have lift kit on the TD5?

will it grab on the stock guards and does it stick out of the arch much? sorry for the Hi Jacking.

I had a 1" spacer in the rear just to even it all out with a bit of load in the rear. As I mentioned earlier, at full articulation, it would just touch the rear guards, but has never been an issue;
