View Full Version : Battery suggestions

Well after drowning the becm and trying to start the car for quite while then letting it sit for a few weeks, it appears my battery is on its last legs. Doesn't start as easily as it used to.

Any suggestions for a battery? I don't want to spend big bucks on a Optima or anything as I have a decent deep cycle sitting in the back as a back up if needed, but don't want to go the el-cheapo and regret it later.

I have read a 1000 cca battery is suggested although my current one was 850 cca I think ( a little smaller than the tray as well)

I've got two "Supercharge All-rounders". 760cca and 105ah. Cranks like a pearler, $180ish a pop, excellent life (coming up to 3yrs on one, two on the other)...

Cheers

I just put in a new Champion N70ZZ4WD, 760cca, $230.
My old battery was on it's last legs, thought I'd be proactive and save myself a breakdown!
Huge difference in how fast she turns over now, even on these cold Melbourne mornings.

I made a low voltage warning circuit so I can monitor both batteries when using it for running things when the car isn't running and it often beeps if the two batteries are isolated. So I'm sure the second batteries pulling it's weight.

So two people with 760cca batteries that say all is fine. From other reports I thought I'd have to look at closer to 1000cca batteries. Interesting. I guess my 850cca started fine.

The batteries in these vehicles were specified to start engines in European and north American climates; about -20c. I don't think Camden gets that cold  I would go with 750 to 850cca.

cheers

Makes sense seeing the drop off in cca due to temperature.

Any idea whether I would fit a 330mm length battery in there?

I did a rough eye measurement and came up with the following limitations which are likely out with parallax errors.

320mm length, 180mm width, 200mm height with 220mm terminal height.

Hey Keith. Guessing this is the one you use?

I had looked at the optima D31 but not convinced the cost is worth it for my application where I already have a good deep cycle sittin gin the boot for cases of emergencies.

Didn't know that. My deep cycle in the back came from them (Neuton Power) and very happy with it.

Last time I discussed this with Rupert Prior he suggested putting in the biggest battery you can fit, he mentioned looking at the diesel spec battery

As far as size goes I had a SuperCharge MRV87 in my last Rangie (after fitting terminal adaptors to it) and it was a perfect fit at 330L x 172W x 215H (236H including terminals)

Given the P38's love of power I think going for the biggest battery you can fit makes sense.

Yeh he said the same to me when I told him my battery probably needs replacement after getting so flat 7V off memory ouch.

Good to know the 330mm length fits. That opens up more options. I wasn't sure if that was pushing the limits.

There are standards for battery sizes and the one which fits the P38 seems to be the approx 332 x 172 x 215 size

I just found these 2 from an old thread

ACDELCO S1111: CCA 830, AH 100, RC 182 (original battery)
Century 86ZMF: CCA 920, AH 100+ ?, RC 200

There was a thread last year on optima batteries and IiRC rrturboD could deliver for $275.00......think he was in Canberra ....I remember because I had just paid $400 for mine.....just a thought.

Believe it or not, I did hit the search button but found nothing that had a topic that stood out from the past year... Obviously didn't scroll far enough.

X2 bought them in 2010. Excellent. Both still in top condition. There is /was an AULRO discount at the time organised by a forum member. Not sure of current situation...no harm in a search and a phone call;)

You're right Pete, that's the one. What Hoges says (although I did not take them up on the AULRO discount).

950CCA under the bonnet with a 750 Optima Yellow top in the rear with a Narva dual battery controller to take care of the charging and usage.

Different place, but same name so pretty sure it's him. But I don;t think they sell the Supercharge where he works now.

Has anyone used a centre post battery? Looks like it might just fit but the positive looks like it may be tight. Good price 1000 cca, 100 mAh battery on offer but the posts are the thing holding me back

100mAh would be unreal for powering your 12v digital clock ;-)

Ha ha. Fair point 100Ah.

Well I bought Neuton G300-1000 centre post battery so here's to hoping the camps/leads reach without mods. It was a great price, decent warrant, the same brand as my deep cycle in the rear, and good specs so thought I'd take the risk.

Well the 332mm (l) x 174mm (w) x 236mm (h) with Centre posts fits great. The negative is a little tight but still fits so I'm happy. Cranks over much stronger now.

Mate that looks like a beast of a battery! Ad we have nailed the max size for our P38's as well

My battery was not looking too healthy at 11.6V overnight so I checked out the options and finished up getting a SuperCharge gold 1000CCA battery, identical specs to the Neuton power battery

Hopefully this may help with some of the weird quirks I have been seeing lately !
