Hi all, i dropped my Disco into the Auto Electrician this morning to have a CD player put in, i just dont have the time or the energy to do it myself. When i went to pick the car up, all excited to listen to my new CD player i was dissapointed to find that he was unable to get it out. Is there a trick to getting it out? Do you need special tools, the removal gear he had didnt work. Matt

There is a special tool - but most car radio shops should carry these, as the one LR used is similar to other manufacturers.
You can make your own tool - use a metal coat hanger or thick metal welding rods and make them into a U shape - need 2 as one is required on either side at the same time.
Slide them into the 2 holes either side of the unit - this should release the securing tabs and you should be able to pull the unit out from the tape deck.

what radio is it?
most need some kind of radio keys to hook on the clips down the sides of the unit and release it from the carrier.....
some of the later ones have allen key screws in them....usually 3mm.
do you have a picture of it?
i might be able to tell you what tools you may need....
i may even have the tool.....
or a model number i may be able to look up on the net?

It's most likely just a Eurovox radio re-badged as Landrover. These are fitted locally, not in the UK before import.
It's a pretty poor auto elec place if they don't have the key to remove the unit. I'd suggest taking it to a different car audio installer.
However, in most cases a thin strip of steel pushed into each slot on the side on the radio facia will release the clips, allowing the unit to slide out.

Hi guys, thanks for the help, i only took it to this guy cause the other one was booked out and i wanted it for the weekend as i was going to Newcastle for LROC driver training. Marcos is sick however so that wont be happening. I will book it into the other place, who installed my UHF, and get them to do it.
I am pretty sure its the Eurovox one as mentioned above. Matt

When I removed my Disco one 97Tdi it required the Eurovox tool as it was different to most others. The Eurovox had two small holes either side of the radio and used a U shape tool to unlock and remove. You can also use acouple of thin long allen keys releasing one side at a time. The other type like what was in my Defender uses the standard blade shaped tool down the side.

You will see a thin slot on each side of the front panel, cut 2 pieces of panel steel about 50mm long push them in the holes and then pull the radio out.

Yep. Done it myself using drill bits and allen keys.... Well, who do you know has 4 allen keys all the same size?? 8O
The trick is to get just the right size wire or thin steel rod. It needs to be a snug fit so it depresses the clips properly.

Have you thought of calling in to your local LR dealer and seeing if they have got one you could borrow?

Agree with all above and its a piece of cake....
did mine in ten minutes when I dropped in a VDO unit and amazingly the two plugs connected perfectly, mine must have been a bit loose 'cause the old unit popped straight out.
Easy job
