Putting it it perspective...
Save 30% on oil... Excellent..
But if it's wrong; and engine is $15k

I was in a BP the other day and they had all the Castrol Oils. I was just about to put the same post up for my V8.

The Penrite 5w30 is fine as I have been using it now for 20,000km, it meets all the spec's and I rang Penrite to confirm.

From the Penrite website:
ENVIRO+ C-4
Full synthetic, SAE 5W-30, low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur) engine oil. It meets the requirements of ACEA C4. Applications include late model Nissan Pathfinder, Navara and X-Trail and many Renault and Samsung vehicles that require the Renault RN 0720 specification. May be used where ACEA C1 is required such as in some Landrover and Jaguar vehicles.
Key Specifications: ACEA C4, Renault RN 0720, Ford M2C934-B (level)
Product Codes: EPLUSC4001, EPLUSC4005, EPLUSC4010, EPLUSC4020, EPLUSC4205

Been using the penrite for the last 3 oil changes...was blowing smoke for the first change then stopped completely after the second change. Get it at Auto pro, and they do all the filters as well...

All my post was eluding to is please confirm the oil you purchase is suitable for your engine :)

No harm Tombie, I am just trying to find an oil suitable for this vehicle but this engine is just a little more advanced than my previous 3.0L Patrol. I used to use Penrite for my JEEP 2.8CRD but the patrol was just Caltex Delo 400 the biggest thing I'm confused over with this model is the "ACEA C1" spec. This is the first time I will be servicing it after purchase so just wanting to get it right, only 85,000klms, the last 2 invoices from previous owner that were supplied didn't stipulate the oil used.

The 934 spec oil only has to be used if the vehicle is fitted with a DPF, which the very first batch of 3.0 MY10s were. Ford WSS-M2C-913-C is the current spec for non-DPF engines. Castrol Magnatec Professional A5 5W-30 (A5/B5 WSS-M2C-913-C) is what I use.
Note: corrected spec on the Magnatec.

So how does one check if they have a DPF Filter?
Graeme

The DPF if fitted is located approximately below the front passenger footwell, between the catalytic converter (mounted quite close to the engine) and the main muffler (approximately under the rear passenger footwell).

I use Delo 400 in my Tdi 300 but for the MY11 3.0 Tdv6 no particulate filter, am using Caltex Havoline Energy 5w30 full synthetic to Ford spec WSSM2C913-C/D

So I'm fairly certain I have no DPF so from a big bunch of internet info I have managed to find the following oils I believe to be compatible:
CASTROL EDGE PROFESSIONAL C1 5W-30
CALTEX HAVOLINE ENERGY EF 5W-30
PENRITE ENVIRO+ C-4 SAE 5W-30
SHELL HELIX ULTRA PROFESSIONAL AF-L 5W-30
CASTROL MAGNATEC 5W-30 A5 is also another but I am a little unsure of this one due to a lack of info.

A5/B5 non-DPF oil supposedly has better lubricating qualities for diesel engines than the C1/C4 DPF oils so if the DPF is not fitted then better not to use it. B1 spec, superseded by B5, is for diesel engines whereas C1/C4 is for DPF regardless of the fuel used.

Hi Damo4runner.
This is link to a previous thread. See SNEIGY's post dated 11 May about VIN indicating whether DPF is installed.

So no DPF and you would say use the CASTROL MAGNATEC 5W-30 A5 is that what I am reading, most of the charts and computers at these places assume it has a DPF. They are right "Oils aint Oils"!!!!!!

OK just picked up some:
Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30:
Is designed to meet the demanding requirements of particular high-performance engines, including Ford and those requiring ACEA A5/B5
Shell and Ford have local relationships in many countries, and Shell is a major supplier to Ford in India and the USA
Passes an extensive range of performance tests to meet engine oil specification WSS-M2C913-C
Specifications: ACEA A5/B5; Ford WSS-M2C913-C; Jaguar Land Rover STJLR.03.5003
30% off so pretty happy, still waiting on a filter to come in so if it is the wrong oil they said feel free to return it before I use it.
The AF-L from what I can work out is the recommendation for the vehicles with the DPF>

Thanks Graeme, I feel so much better knowing I have got the right stuff. Now to just find the time to do the change and convince the wife I need an IID TOOL to reset the service reminder and have a play around with of course. But first I need to change the sump over on the transmission. Hopefully that won't be as hard as finding the correct oil was. I hear ZF sell them direct or A&B transmissions.

Mine doesn't show a service reminder and I can't see it in the CCF where I might have disabled it.
The gearbox plastic pan will either have to be cut into 2 to remove if the rear cross-member isn't removed. Also when I did mine the original screw threads were corroded which caused me to shear off one of the replacement shorter and weak stainless screws, which could have necessitated the removal of the gearbox if the screw had been under the front cross-member. The threads should have been cleaned with a tap before fitting the steel pan, not after a screw broke!
How many kms has the vehicle done? My gearbox failed shortly after the oil change due to a known fault of worn pump bushes which must have been aggravated by the new, uncontaminated oil. It was suggested that because of the known fault the oil should not have been changed which would have allowed perhaps another 50,000 kms out of the box. The only positive outcome was that ZF rebuilt the gearbox to the current level including an updated torque converter whereby it now hangs onto higher gears under some load rather than dropping a gear and needlessly revving the engine, particularly noticeable when cresting hills and rounding slow street corners.

85,000 and log booked serviced up till now. What is the "known fault" with them if you don't mind?
Graeme
17th May 2015, 05:36 PM
ZF fitted white-metal bushes for the pump to run on to 6HP gearboxes that appeared in many brands of vehicle from early 2008 until 2011/12, including LRs, Fords, BMWs etc. The bushes don't last as they should but because a lot of boxes fail due valves getting blocked from clutch material deterioration first, the worn bush fault doesn't show-up as much as it otherwise would. ZF eventually overcame the engineering deficiency so with my box now at the latest production parts level it will not fail again from this fault. I'm told that some gearbox specialists wont touch these boxes because they are known to fail as soon as the oil is changed. The worn bushes prevent full pressure from being available so clutch E starts to slip.

What mileage are we talking about regarding the bush issue?

Hmmm I'm hoping 85,000 isn't to late to try and stop anything from happening, I don't need the cost of a transmission rebuild on a car I haven't had yet for a month. Being in Tasmania we are limited to the amount of people that can actually do anything on these vehicles. Might need to wait till I can get down to see Justin Cooper at Kingston for his opinion.

My country-based D4 had done 150K when the oil was changed. The oil colour was checked at its 90K service and deemed "as new" and at 150K the oil was only slightly discoloured. The torque converter and clutches had been babied since new to avoid overheating the oil to prolong the gearbox life so I was expecting the oil to be as clean as it was. Perhaps the fine white metal bush material was suspended in the oil to make it thicker so that the seals didn't leak. The new oil turned black in 2,000 kms due to the particular clutch slipping, sometimes requiring manual 4th or even 3rd to maintain drive up hills at 80 kph. The gearbox was rebuilt by ZF in western Sydney for $3950+GST and R&R'd by a local (non-LR) mechanic guided by extracts from the D4 WSM provided by me.
Perhaps if oil is changed regularly then a lower concentration of metal particles might prolong bush life although country usage should have resulted in less wear anyway.

I'm assuming you have a 2.7 going by the wheels you have listed in your signature, maybe I'm wrong. Does this mean you have the ZF6HP26 gearbox, I was of the understanding the 3.0 came with the ZF6HP28 and if so what is the difference between the 2?
Graeme
18th May 2015, 04:24 AM
Mine is a 3.0 with the 6HP28X. The 6HP26X and the up-rated 6HP28X have the same pump. The factory big brake option is currently removed.
Note that there are many different versions of both the 26 and 28 and that the 3.0's 28X is not the same as the V8's 28X.

Wow I didn't know you could change out the brakes to fit the smaller rims, very interesting but sounds expensive. Anyway I sure that I will enjoy the experiences that this vehicle will bring and maybe not enjoy some of the problems by the sounds of things.

I use Castrol Edge 5w-30 in my 2.7 D3. The super cheap near me does stock it. They seem to have specials on this oil a few times a year and so I tend to get it when the deals are on for about $55 for 5L.

Pity - it doesn't meet the ACEA spec for the engine...
I'd suggest you stop using it... It's only A3/B4.
You need A5...

Graeme is correct what he says. For what its worth I search High and low for the 5w - 30 Castrol Magnetec A5. Repco will get it for you as the are supposed to be a Castrol dealer. Supercheap usually will get it but only in 20lts.
The cheapest by far should be your ford dealer they use it in the Ranger, and if you take a container just buy what you need
