View Full Version : Mounting a Tablet on dash

Does anyone have photos that they can post here showing how they mounted a tablet to the dash of their vehicle?

I have a 10.1" Asus tablet fitted to a RAM Tab-Tite holder which for a short while I used to attach to the windscreen of our previous vehicle with a sturdy RAM suction cup. It was located in the middle of the dash - ie between the passenger and driver, but it was too high on the dash and blocked a good part of my forward vision - apart from possibly being against the law, so I removed it. I also tried the holder that clips into the air vents - not stable for a 10.1" tablet and the rod that bolts to the base of the front passenger seat with the tablet sitting on top - again very unstable on rough roads.
I haven't tried installing the tablet in our new TDV6 MY15 yet as it is still at the mechanics being fitted with stuff. So I am not sure if placing the RAM mount on the dash will be obstructive or not.
Has anyone found a solution?
ps: I don't want to go any smaller with the size of the Tablet.

Try google for Hold my Phone. They have quite an array of mounts, not sure if suitable for the weight and size of a tablet but worth a look.
Cheers Alan

I have the mount. I just want to see where others have attached it. Also want to see if anyone else has placed it on top of the dash in the middle and whether it obstructs the driver's view.

Make a cardboard dummy and try it out.

I use a windscreen suction RAM mount for my Galaxy tab 10.1, it works well and doesn't really obstruct my vision at all.

I'd send a photo but I've taken it off as I'm having the windscreen replaced tomorrow.
Once that's sorted I'll post a photo.

With the 8 speeds lack of a shift lever, there is a huge amount of real estate to mount a tablet down lower down. I have a 7" tablet in a RAM mount mounted on a flat steel bracket I made that bolts to the front seat bases. I have a small RAM mount that I can swap to use with my phone.

I had the tablet mounted up higher in my old D2a, but I could not find anywhere suitable high up to mount it on the D4, both in terms of suitable to see without undue obstruction of the dash and something to mount it to.

Have fun.

Do you have it mounted on the dash between the passenger and the driver?

Interesting set up Chris. Does it not get the shakes when going over rough surfaces?
I used to have mine low down about the height of your set up on our previous vehicle (Nissan Patrol), but found that I had to take my eyes off the road for too long - ie just a second or two, but still the switching back and forth was a little disconcerting - especially for the passengers :)

The phone is rock solid in its smaller mount, I haven't checked the larger tablet on a decent rough road yet. I would prefer it mounted higher up but there is no space without obstructing the touch screen or vision over the dash.

I use a windscreen mounted bracket which suits 7 - 8" tablets, I wouldn't go any larger than that up there.
It's great not to have to look down to check the map.

What is the brand of bracket you have?

Jay car!!!
I have since added a strip of neoprene rubber to the bottom so it sits on the dash but gives support while absorbing vibration, works a treat.

I have a 10 inch tablet on a Ram Mount which I secure to the right front bolt of the passenger's seat. The only thing that is a little harder to access is the DSC button, which is no biggie.

I wonder if you can get the seat mount and fix it to your existing.

Thanks, but as mentioned in my original post, I have tried the seat mount, but found that it wobbled badly on rough roads - that was in the Patrol which had very stiff suspension btw. No matter how much I tightened the bottom bolt to secure the rod it still wobbled at the top. It was a RAM product as well.

Fred.. Can you take a shot from the Passenger side showing the mount etc..

Thanks

Thanks - but what's the wobble factor? :)

I have used a seat base pole mount previously in my old D2a and as you said it used to wobble insanely, even on highway roughness roads, let alone anything rough like the Gibb River Rd etc. My mount, whilst the wife only just tolerates its ugliness, is rock solid. I went for a run with the tablet today and the only movement is in the RAM X mount frame itself.

The tablet when mounted as I have is high enough that the analogue clock is obscured, so it is not really that low. I actually had to move it down today so I could get to the volume control knob.

Have fun,

Well - here is what mine looks like. I think it is too big, but it is very sturdy.

Here are a couple of photos of my setup.

Obstruction from the driving position is minimal as the tab is really only visible in my peripheral vision.

I prefer having it up on the dash as it means I can glance at it whilst driving without taking my eyes off the road

That's how I had mine, but I found that I couldn't see the front left hand corner of the vehicle. I think you would find the same with it in that position.
Do you drive with the tablet in that position around town, or just when you go on big trips?

Just on trips, I leave the mount on all the time though.
The mount itself doesn't obstruct the front left at all.

I saw a mount that used a suction cap on the lower windscreen with an adjustable length rod that rested on the dash (with suitable protection) to allow the tablet to be located over the front of the dash. I can't find details at the moment but will keep looking. The vehicle owner who does a lot of outback travelling reported that the mount does an excellent job.

That's exactly what I am looking for. To lower the tablet from the dash, I need 6 cm or so length in the arm to drop the holder over the edge of the dash. However I am then concerned about stability unless I can get the arm to rest on top of the dash.

Here's the one for larger tablets and there's one with a grab for smaller tablets.
Arkon Extending Windscreen Tablet Mount Push Button Release 9" 12" Tablets | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Arkon-Extending-Windscreen-Tablet-Mount-Push-Button-Release-9-12-Tablets-/111467253505?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item19f3f74f01)

Might have to use good double-sided tape on the suction cap.

Thanks Graeme - the advantage of the Arkon system is that it is infinitely adjustable, but it looks a bit flimsy.
I use RAM products which are quite sturdy and looking at their website they have a longer arm that can fit the mount that I already have - but it is not telescopic adjustable like the Arkon is :(

I have used Arkon stuff in past but found the mounts had too much play in them compared to RAM mounts. This made them vibrate even on highway roughness roads. The RAM X mount that I now use is much more stable than the Arkon system. The main disadvantage is that I could hold both my phone and a small tablet in the Arkon tablet mount (not at the same time) but I have to change RAM X mount sizes to switch between devices now.

The Ram seat mount is a good thing. Yes it moves but it's better than being fined for blocked vision and keeps it low in an accident....big rear ender a dash mount iPad Air will find the air before being imbedded in a kid in the back centre seat if you have that filled. Cheers

Good point, we always forget these things, anyway shouldn't the passenger be the navigator? even though it could be your wife:twisted:
ah the arguments LOL

My Ram Mount iPad holder uses the 1.5" ball and triple suction cap. It has the long arm that lowers far enough so the iPad is virtually sitting in the dash centre stowage area. It doesn't restrict my view when driving, but I am fairly tall.

Used it when crossing approximately 1100 dunes in the Simpson desert last year. It is solid and never moves.

I first trialled the Ram floor mount system that attaches an alloy rod onto the passenger front seat bolt but it swayed around too much for my liking.

Like many we use a RAM mount for our iPAD which houses the HEMA map set, amongst other databases. The mount we use is a scissor mechanism across two axis so picture an X and you get the picture, literally. This serves the outcome perfectly. The iPAD sits on the dash mounted to the windscreen by a large suction cup (RAM) and whilst it does obscure some forward vision we only use it offered so no problems with pedestrian impact et al

Sorry for the late reply! No real wobble to worry about, wobbles more when there's nothing in it.
I had a ipad under all 4x4ing conditions and it's no issue.
