Hi All
I have a MY 13 D4 started the truck up this morning gear dial came up and in a matter of seconds it went back down and then in about 20 to 30 seconds the gear selection dial came up and I was able to select reserve gear. and drove off.
Could anyone let me know if this is a problem or is this normal with the D4 ?.
It appears to happen when doing a cold start

Havent heard of this on a D4,it could be a transmission protection for the cold start.
My CAT grader, and the previous one wont allow gear selection on a cold start,it just shows a dotted line for both forward and reverse gear to select.Only on VERY cold mornings, usually less than 1min,up to 2min max.Yes I do warm the machine before operating, just to get the heater working;);););););)

Here you go Kev .... from Disco3 in the UK. Yours could be suffering from this.

DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Rotary gear selector won't stay up when cold. (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic124096.html)

A customer may report that the Transmission Control Switch (Rotary selector) intermittently fails to rise when the Start/ stop ignition button is pressed or may rise and fall immediately, particularly where ambient temperatures are less than 4 degrees C

The motor within the Transmission Selector assembly may be at the lower end of the specification preventing it from rising within the required time span.

The fix is to replace Transmission Control Switch.

Cheers,
Scott

But when you have a gear stick, there is no need for little blue tablets. :p:p:p

But if you don't have a decent stick you're just a knob :wasntme:

Guess you can go play with your flappy bits ;)

Not sure if it's the same issue but there was a service bulletin on the gear selector for MY13 SE. Solenoid issue or something.

I saw it on TOPIX against my VIN and it was 'addressed' when the car went in for it's first service. I didn't have any issues but it was dealt with supposedly as part of a global fix.

I'm pretty certain the fault in some cars meant the knob didn't rise up.

Hi Celtoid
Thanks for the info. Question When was your service done .
my first service done in January 2015 at Bruce Lynton speedo reading was about 9,000 k now 11,950. Is there anything I should tell LR Dealer about.

grateful for the info

Hi Kev
This happened to me 12mths ago with only 3000kms travelled. Initially I noticed the gear selector would rise then drop then rise again within 10-15 seconds every morning (i.e. when cold). It didn't recur during the day but would again the next morning. I began to think it was normal! Eventually on first day of our trip to Flinders Ranges it did same thing but then dropped again and stayed down.We were full packed leaving a cabin near Port Augusta. I then managed to rotate the dial to "D" whilst it was down (having read in manual this was possible). However what I didn't consider was what would happen if I couldn't turn it back to park (which happened!). So we were stranded for 8hrs before it was trucked back to Adelaide- a new rotary gear selector was sent out from UK. Mine was apparently the first D4 to have this done (so I was told). That took 10 days. A Hilux mining ute took over duties for the rest of that trip:( We are going back up there again next month. No signs of any repeat issues with the replacement gear selector. Fingers crossed! Regards, David.

I'll go digging for the paperwork. Hopefully it lists the bulletin number on the paperwork.

HI Blue C
Thanks David I think mine is heading that way. I am a bit worried about going away in the caravan the way it is acting. Hopefully with the info I am getting from the forum (which I appreciate) we will have it fixed in the next couple of days
Enjoy your travels.

Hi Kev,

Service was carried out by Austral LR in Fortitude Valley (26/11/2014).

Bulletin Number is Q355 "Rotary Gear Shift Selector Fails To Rise"

As I said, I never had an issue but it was carried out as part of a global requirement. I've had no issue since.

Touch Wood, the car has been absolutely fault free since new (late 2013).

Cheers,

Kev (Celtoid).

No probs mate.

Well Kev, there's another coincidence .... apart from our names .... LOL!!! I bought mine in Cairns too. As I had the previous D4 as well.

Mine was built in September 13 and I purchased it from Trinity in Feb 2014, still unregistered (50 klms on the clock), for what I considered at the time a very competitive price.

My first D4 was very reliable .... once they'd replaced 4 turbochargers ... :)! Actually, it was. Had a few 'New Model' issues (mostly little things) with the 2009 D4 but after a couple of years it ran fault free until I sold it at four and a half years old. Still miss it [bawl] ... LOL.

Good luck.

Kev.

Very interesting I bought mine with 45 k on the clock through a broker
Qld teachers credit union (Valley) Disco was road freighted from Cairns to Brisbane (was included in price as I was after a HSE.
Disco has been trouble free up to now only problem it is Corris grey.
But hey any colour in a Disco is OK.
Mine could have been in their yard when you bought your D4.
I am very happy with D4 love the way it tows the caravan.
Any way will keep in touch.

HI David
Thanks for the info. It was handy this morning I was able to tell the guys in the service department what had happened to you and the other guys here
on the forum.
As I said previously the part will be replaced as soon as the part comes in from the UK.
Apparently they will only need it for an hour to do the job

Thank you again for your input
