I believe that when the engine is idling the Pilot Jet #51 is in use. .W.

not quite as simple as that on the solex as theres three adjustments theres one for the air mix theres one for the fuel and then theres the tapered idle screw t the bottom, unfortunately theres seemingly about 9000000000000 different carbie pictures out there that show them and I havent been able to find one tht lines up exactly with that parts diagram.

whats the problem with your carby?

I find this book invaluable when working on a Solex.

Well, this morning I made good on my word to strip the carburetor off the engine, I took it down to it's basic bits

and yes then it started to sprinkle rain as you would expect, anyway I pressed on using the carby cleaner in a pressure pack
then blew it all out with compressed air, re-assembled it and refitted it back on the vehicle

primed the system hand and added a splash down the throat and it came to life, it is idling a tad fast with the choke out

but after it warmed it and the choke in, it does idle, yippee, now just need to be able to get it out and take it for a drive cheers Dennis
ps It would not idle unless the choke was on approx. 1/3rd, which in turn made it lumpy @ idle and make plenty of sooty smoke, it now appears to be fixed LOL but anything could happen, anyway thank you for your responses, cheers,,.
