G'day all,

Hopefully someone can help.

The speedo lights have stopped working in my TD5 Defender, the LHS one stopped a few weeks ago and now the other side has stopped too. I've just changed both the bulbs, presuming that they've blown, but they still don't work. :confused: The old bulbs were a little cloudy, so can't tell.

All other dash lights are fine, the headlights are wired through a Drivesafe upgrade kit, and all work fine.

Any ideas on what to try next?
Is there a separate fuse for speedo lights?

I've searched the forum and all posts I could find talk about upgrades to LED.

I've just started a new job and work till after 6 at night, so the lights are getting a bit of workout; good thing Defenders are noisy as now I have to guess my speed for the drive home based on the noises ;)
Surprisingly accurate though :o

I have no experience with the TD5 but I'd be guessing a bad earth. If you have a volt meter, check the voltage at the positive and negative side of the bulb socket with respect to a good earth (chassis) connection.

If it is the same as the earlier 110, the earths for the gauges, including the lights, are via a stack of tags under one of the instrument mount nuts. If this is loose, one or more of the earths is likely to be ineffective.

I've never played with a TD5 speedo before, but this diagram should help. It's either going to be pin 3 or 4 of this connector. It seems to say that the earth is broken to switch the lights off - I can't imagine why they'd wire it like that given the circuit it's on but that should at least give you a starting point.

Thanks for the ideas guys, and thanks very much for the circuit diagram Dervish :)
I'll have to have more of a play on the weekend with a multi meter.

I'm sure it's something simple::imwithstupid:
