Hello All,

This message does not fit the Land Rover Parts wanted so I hope someone will look at it under General Chat!

Would anyone on the forum be a Ride-on Lawn Mower Parts supplier?

I am after the Steering Sector Gear - the plate which has the teeth that the steering wheel worm bites into. The part looks vaguely similar to one in the photograph. On my mower the hole at the top left corner of the photograph has a raised collar welded to the plate.

My steering sector gear plate sans teeth is shown in the second photograph :(

It is for a Rover Rancher Autodrive Ride On It may have been made in 2008 (?)

Model Number: 28169/180
Serial Number: 5057184. The engine is 13 hp.

Well you never know your luck in the big city!

Kind Regards
Lionel

Hello.

Tough one. Rover was purchased by MTD USA some time back and to my knowledge any parts for the good old made in Brisbane Rover equipment is no more ... Unless you can find a dealer with new old stock. Rover product of today is nothing like it used to be (PRC made).

I'll see if I can turn up anything for you via my industry associates ... We were never a Rover dealer, and elected not to take on MTD !

I'll get back to you ...

A10432 - steering sector shaft . Keep in mind my version is the 1998 version . Same unit but Made in Qld .
I have been out the game for a couple of years , but try an old school country mower shop .
Good luck !

Hello Mower enthusiasts,

I am still waiting for the telephone call back from the local authorised agents.... still waiting ...

I took Plan B and did an internet search that turned up another "authorised agent" in town. They reckon they have the part on back order as their regular schedule of stocking of spares. They did not mention how long it has been on back order for ... They should let me know how they go by next Friday.

The mower is okay to use as long as I only steer straight ahead or towards the right while going forward! :p Or in reverse on full right lock until it finally points in the correct direction and I only move the steering from right full lock to the centre while going forward again.

Kind Regards
Lionel

A bit of delicate work with a welder and grinder might get you back on the grass.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the tip. The cost of a new part - if one is available at this stage, would work out more economical. While I do have a grinder I would have to find someone with a welder and pay them for their time.

Kind Regards
Lionel

Hello Fluids,

Thank you for your message. I will find out this Friday. Cross fingers. Otherwise I will take the part off and track down a local welder that does small jobs at a reasonable price.

Or I could go retro and fit a bit of rope to the left hand wheel pivot point and pretend it is a billy cart! :)

Kind Regards
Lionel

I have one of the very last aussie made Ranchers (18hp single deck) made. It's steering started jumping and skipping... Similar to what yours is probably doing. I couldn't see signs of any real wear on the cogs though. I finally worked out the lower column bracket had come loose. It was allowing the teeth to unmesh and "jump". It could be worth a check.

If yours is one of the last mowers, you will find it doesn't cut grass for **** either too :( Here's how I fixed mine to get the damn thing to actually cut grass rather than tear the **** out of it and "hack it up".

Is anyone else being driven insane by mowers that don't cut ? (http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/technical-performance/94425-anyone-else-being-driven-insane-mowers-dont-cut.html)

There a bloody good mower those rovers. Mine has the heal toe that looks like an improved copy of the greenfield friction drive (how on earth did rover get away with that without being sued). It still has it's original cutter belt. Because it never slips and screams like the hopeless american made junk sold here, it seems to last forever. 4 blades are only about $30 bucks to replace ... which I do often as the paddock is very un-even and there always hitting the ground/rocks/bricks. I can't understand how the american "bar blades" can be sold here. First rock you hit you bend them ... and break deck spindals etc... 'cos they don't rotate back like the locally made stuff with swing back blades.

Greenfield did take rover to court over it and lost how I have no idea as the drive is so simlular its not funny

They actually improved the layout of it ... it's all up inside the mower. On the little greenfields you chew out the chain/cogs as there out in the grass and muck. In the rover there mounted inboard.

I'm not looking forward to the day the friction material wears out. It looks like you need to dismantle the entire mower to get the drive unit out!

Hello All,

I was able to pick up the steering sector gear today. :D I can now steer to the left and to the right when I want to. I can also do that fine adjustment required in order to maintain a straight line over a distance. Woo Hoo :p

Kind Regards
Lionel
