Our rear driver's side door in our 97 Tdi is playing up.
When you hit the button to open the doors this door's button only comes up half way. So when you go to open it it catches and will not open.
Is there a fix for this?
I thought I would ask first before I started pulling the door trim off!

usually the spring in the door lock mechanism, either replace the mechanism at $150 a pop or get the replacement spring at $25 a pop.

From memory on my old TDi, the door lock solenoid was the issue. I got a generic one from AutoBarn. No mods required. My car had also had the anti-rust treatment and on hot days things gummed up. Even the key locks got sticky. The clowns that sprayed it got the stuff every where.
cheers,
Trev.

Drew,
The back door actuator in mine started to play up and I bought a Jaycar replacement motor. The problem with that was that it worked BACKWARDS - half a step out of phase with the other doors so when everything was meant to lock it unlocked and VV. The original still tried to work and it would unlock nicely, but it didn't have enough oomph to relock the lock.
If you want to have a play with the Jaycar one you're more than welcome, but I ended up just buying another s/h original one from Toorak Tractor in Braeside for $45.

all you had to do was reverse the wires.....then it would be in phase with the others.....

WRONG! Did that and no go. It would wait a cycle and then continue working in reverse.

Drooby, if the interior door lock ( the manual one ) doesn't have a positive snap up/down, the spring on the lock mechanism is broke. You can easily make one from a long $2 spring from bunnings. Simply inspect a working mechanism to see the size/position of the spring then cut/bend your own - easy.
My 97 Disc had the same problem ( was like that for a year  ). I frigged around with the actuator for days  then found out about the spring.
