View Full Version : Front swivel now ???? :(

Hi Guys

Tracta joint output shaft as pictured running through the stub axle.

There is a bronze??? bush shown. "Bush for driving shaft" P/N 217354.

Output shaft and bush fit like the proverbial in seaboot,[never mind thou think fractions] and I cannot find any reference in my 48-58 workshop manual (mind you it doesn't have Tracta Joints either).

Is this supposed to be a nice running fit? (I notice that for a plain bearing it has not lube groove) Do I need to go get or manufacture new bushes?

Hi Rick,

Yes there should be a bush in there with tracta joints. I got a brass bush from our local bearing shop, cut it to length pressed it in the axel stub and machined the inside to suit the axel allowing a loose fit.

I don't know if lube grooves are a good idea, it might transfer oil in or out of the swivel housings.

Found the following in my Autopress manual:- "The clearance in the bush should be 0.02" to 0.028" (0.5 to 0.7mm). Renew if necessary and ream to 1.25" (31.75mm)".

Gee that's alot of clearance. I didn't allow that much maybe 5 thou.

Now I'll have to pull it apart again. Would hate it to seize .

It has to allow for slight misalignment between the inner and outer axles, the axes of which should intersect exactly on the king pin (swivel) axis in all steering positions, and possibly also for manufacturing tolerance on the Tracta joint.

More now :)

have had the bearings all pressed and now ready to assemble, as soon as diffs are ready.

I'm still playing there. One of the diffs (the replacement purchase) has a pretty crook, badly worn and "ripped" drive flange at/for the Gitts seal. Some thought required or try and find another. The one out of the the dead diff good surface, ruined coupling bolt holes worn and bent, weld and re drill ?? Mmmm!

Back to my original intent.

Question: Given the weight of an assembled front hub and swivel, which is better:


assemble all on to diff carrier bit by bit, or
assemble the lot and fit to carrier?

By "diff carrier", I take it you mean front axle housing. If that is correct, I would assemble it bit by bit - as you say it is heavy, awkward and has no "base" to sit it on!

diff carrier = axle housing :)

Build in situ, did think that would be the go. Ta. Mmmmm! Means I need to get a diff in.

There should be plenty of secondhand flanges kicking about from blown diffs and I would have one here if you get stuck.

Need a couple of pictures to see which one your damaged one is, as there has been a few variations on those flanges over time.

But I reckon there will be plenty to chose from up your way as well.

Thanks for all of that. Found a flange with OK bolt holes. Now both done with "Ezi/Redi" Sleeves for the Gitts seals :) Getting the 85ft/lbs on the nut on the bench not a single person job.

Even with the pinion pre-loaded to the 85ft/lbs still have around double the specified backlash between pinion and crown wheel. However, all is smooth and the gear cheeks have the appropriate wear patterns. Really didn't want to go fiddling with the crown wheel bearings. Will be installing in the housings tomorrow - Sunday.

Hopefully the diffs will be well when they finally get to absorb the awesome 2ltr power in year or two . :)
