View Full Version : Freewheeling hubs on a 6X6 perentie

Anyone know if the 24 spline series 3 freewheelers will fit on the Salisbury axles. I am looking at fitting them to the rear axle on mine after I put the detroit lockers in. If they will fit it will save the rear axle from windmilling all the time.

No. Five bolt vs six bolt drive flanges.

But believe it or not, free wheel hubs do exist for coil sprung Landrovers, and would fit. Presumably made for the earliest 110s that had selectable four wheel drive optional. And I have seen them offered for sale, although not recently, but a poke around might find a pair.

Hi brian ashcrofts do a kit to suit early 110 so should be right for your axle flanges.

You'll only need the hub kits though.

Thanks John, JC has just come up with the link to them.

Thanks JC, from that Ashcroft link it looks like they are AVM so possibly may be able to get them here. With our low dollar and high postage cost from the UK it's probably just as cheap to get them here. Have to make a few phone calls!

Thanks Paul, looks like AVM are the go. Had any problems with them? I remember oil leakage was always a problem when I had them on Series vehicles years ago but I think they were Selectro brand.

I think you still need the flanges that are made by ashcrofts to bolt the avm hubs to.

I thought they would bolt straight on where the drive flanges go? Found an AVM kit number so will ring and find out.

Ah yes well that could be so. Make it a lot easier.

No I have had no problems, when I went from drum to disc brakes I had to drill & tape some new holes.
In the disc hubs, they go straight on.
Mine are S/3 so if you get the Defender it should be bolt up.

Paul.

Brian, if you are still interested, they are available.

Products AVM (http://www.avm.com.br/products4.htm)

AVM p# for thick flanged vehicles is AVM446**
AVM p# for thin flanged vehicles is AVM451**

Both are 24 spline, only series FWH's are available in 10 spline.

All of them come with the parts for an LT230 to convert it to part time 4WD, this is denoted by the ** in the part number. (these parts will be useless to you, as they are me)

The best price I found for AVM446** is $435 from Terrain Tamer (believe it or not!), and I have just bought some, in order to give me selectable RWD/AWD/4WD, but primarily because nothing entertains me more than watching purists heads implode :p :wasntme:

The transfer case bits have gone to another guy with a Defender who wants part time 4WD, as I have an LT95.

Thanks Will, I fitted them a couple of months ago, ended up getting them from Ashcrofts in UK for about that money. Mobs like ARB and TJM wanted about $700 for them here!!

Yep, I get trade at ARB and they still wanted $660!

These worked out slightly cheaper than Ashcrofts since the exchange rate fell.

Anyone have a permanent cure for oil leaks on these AVM hubs. They leak where the centre plastic bit that you turn contacts the outer shell. When they were new that had a flimsy looking double flanged ring in there that leaked almost straight away. I replaced them with slightly larger proper O rings and have also replaced them a couple of times. The O rings usually don't leak until you turn the centre bit and engage the hubs then you can just about guarantee they will leak. Not a very good design. :(

Someone made this comment on the facebook page.

AVM are the biggest buckets of snot around, I've pulled so many off and thrown AISIN on as a replacement on so many cars, I don't know why people keep blowing money on the bloody things.

Although I couldn't see a Rover listing on the Aisin page...

I will be interested to see how they last.

If needed you can redrill 4 holes in 24 spline S3 hubs and use them instead.
PCD is the same between series and coilers.

I have never found FWH that were up to the job long term though...

They are mainly just to stop the rear diff and driveshaft from windmilling when not needed Ben. They are most likely not going to get much use. However the way they are shaping up I might be putting the standard drive flanges back on before long.

We have Shute Upton FWH on the rear axle of ours for the reason Brian stated.
We do mostly road work now and have never needed to put the FWH,s in.
The factory diff locks are all we need so far.

Dunno Brian. I have a spare set and like them as I think they are strong and simple. Only two O rings to seal.
I had a set on the 2A Pilchers ex Woomera Ambulance I toured Oz with back in the late 60,s. The only trouble I had was my fault.
I was parked for a photo at the tree the Leyland Brothers marked as the centre of Oz. Went to turn around without the hubs in and Bang. Broken axle.
Had to drive to Port Augusta on the front before I could get a replacement.

Here they are on the 6x6 Camper.

Thought I would chuck this in too.
The tree with the Ambo.
We went back a few years ago in the 6x6 but could not find it.
I think someone took it for a souvener.
Keith.

Thanks Keith, they look a bit more substantial than the AVM ones that I have. I will give them a call tomorrow and find out if they are still available. Don't suppose you want to part with your spare set?
The 900.16 tyres look good on the 6by!

Their mining work is probably slowing down. You might be able to convince them to run a new batch.

I had a look at their website and there is no mention of FWH's in their products, but hopefully they may still do them. The only thing I noticed about the ones on Keith's 6by is the 6 bolts. Wonder what the go is there? The intermediate axle has the normal 5 stud drive flange.

His are prototype borg warner axles arent they? Probably stage 1 hubs.

How many 6x6 are there? Might be enough to justify a new run of 5 stud FW hubs.

Yes, I swapped the rear hubs out.
Thought it the easiest way:)

Keith

PS.
I forgot to say that I had Mal Storey broach out the splines as of course the FWH,s are coarse and the 6x6 fine.
So its not a straight swap.

That puts a different angle on it Keith. My axles are disc braked and have a special hub that is a different offset to all other landys (except for the RFSV version) so cannot change hubs without affecting the track and also caliper position. Back to the drawing board it seems!:(
