300tdi vacuum pump freeplay?

Hi all!

Decided to check vacuim pump as there is ticking noise coming from that area. After taking it out I noticed that actuating shaft that gest pushed by camshaft has some axial freeplay in it. Is this how it is supposed to be?

Also spring is very stiff. I can barely press actuator in with my hands assisted by knees. Does this sound ok also?

The spring is highly tensioned so thats ok, you shouldnt be able to move the rod side to side by much.

Thanx! At least spring is ok. Side ti side there is no play. But axial there is.

i replaced mine, three in a year all wabco ones, just put a indy pump. brand
in been good 10,000 ks now and $100 cheaper.
when this one fails $1100 to fit a electric one

What kind of failure symptoms did you have mudder?

You've got to be joking! I've been running an electric vacuum pump from a Volvo turbo model (740?) for a few years now. Check the Volvo wreckers.

Decided not to replace the mechanical pump as, when I took it off, a lot of the hard facing was missing from the vac pump cam lobe.

symptoms of my vacuum pump failures were, ticking and very little braking,
leaking from pump because of lose rivets.
as for the $1100 price of a electric pump firstly, im not a tight arse.
only use new parts of good quality, unlike the landrover mechanics ive come across in cairns, the only failures ive ever had have been some crap parts
fitted by the cowboys up here, if I don't do the conversion myself I will be using bcr in cairns they specialise in hot roads, and and brake and clutch conversions, the electric pump will be from the states, the indy pump brand one im running now is going good seems they like them in Africa.cheers

Uhmmmmm. I have ticking but no leaks and no braking problem. So don't know if it's woth taking it apart. Only thing that I can see is bit plunger axial play. Apart from that all looks good.

Make sure you also check the booster for cracks around the master cylinder mount. This will also take out vacuum pumps quickly as well.
If/when you install a new pump put double gaskets under it - this seems to help life span as well.

I'd also advise using genuine or at least a quality booster, I had a big problem with an aftermarket cheapie (- not price) couldn't get a good pedal and it was doing my head in until my son asked "should that be moving like that"
