I realise we have to have some sort of control on here but I often feel some moderatos over do things by moving posts to other sections I have seen many comments about sporting issues posted on General Chat over the years with no problem. (Almost anything goes, have a look and drop in a few lines. Think of it as a campfire chat with the kids around) I thought talking sport around a camp fire would be normal.

In part I aggree with you Hodgo, not many subjects are taboo around a camp fire. I also think vnx is onto it with the post in question. As the subject was highly topical, I feel it could have been left in GC for a couple of days before being moved. At least the title and link to its new home remain.

I'm not a moderator on this site. I have been a moderator on two other forums and an admin on one and believe me, it's a big job. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people on the forum can't see.
So rather than posting a whinge on the forum, how about sending a PM to the mods and ask them. You never know, they might have had a good reason for the shift, it does happen you know.

It's a bit like, you coming home and dumping your car keys somewhere in the general area of the front door, and someone finding the keys and putting them on the hook marked "car keys" and you complaining that you can't find them where you thought you left them. Get over it and be glad there's people willing to tidy up after you. :p

Why don't we have a section for competitions like where am I, Jokes and may be a lot of other subjects that some moderators don't like in gen chat.
I often think this forumis shrinking in posts compared to what it use to be. Its seams to be usedmainly by a small group of the same user a lot more than in the past

Or we could cut the craploads of sections and have broader ones- reducing admin burden and allowing a much neater browsing experience. We have a search function to prevent us manually trawling thru the sub forums (or use an advanced search by sub forum). Less sections would also be good for the feng shui of the place.
Like seriously... we have a freakin' railway section.
WTF I don't even...
SA Reports has not had a post since 21.06.2015 (nearly 4 months)
Biofuels tech forum has had nothing in almost 2 months.

why
I think people like to categorise / classify things to make them easy to find later. Personally I don't think it works well because one person classifies something as 'this' another classifies it as 'that'. But, anyway ...
Most discussion travels through a well worn process. It is actively discussed over a time frame that is measured in days then forgotten about.
After it has reached the 'forgotten about' stage those that like labelling things can archive to where they think it can be most likely found if anybody really wants to dig it up again.
Regardless of where it is placed a thread is always visible while it is in the active discussion stage simply by viewing 'new posts'.

I'm sure in this instance the capabilities of the search engine are limited by the search terms... not the inability of the search engine. In other words... the problem exists between the keyboard and the mouse :p
Some pretty amazing things can be done in the google search, if you have not tried. Or a site specific google search using the advanced search, boolean operators etc.

Riiiiiigggggghhhhhhttttttt.
I assume the words under your username indicate you're a moderator - if not, you need to rethink your attitude.
However, do this.
I recently had need to remove the driveshafts on my Series 1. I used the advanced search function. I typed in 'remove driveshaft' - bearing in mind that it ignores phrases and works solely on the words. I limited it to the Series 1 sub-forum
Go on, do it.
You'll get 196 hits (yes, I know you can limit that with time), 5X that if you split up driveshaft into two words.
You get no indication of where in the thread your results land though you can look through it looking for individual words highlighted in red.
And you imagine this is a highly useful search engine?
It's not.
It's also about what you always get on a forum so no-one should be surprised, I just don't like your attitude that I'm somehow at fault for the standard forum software. If you are a Moderator, you should know better.

The aulro 'google' search is pretty average
I like to use this:
https://www.google.com/advanced_search
And put the domain as aulro.com
Search by phrases with "inverted commas" around phrases I want to search, and usually hit go.
IF I am getting too much information (say for exampleI want to filter non applicable search results) you can add them to the NOT box (none of these words).
Just a penny for my thoughts.

Not that it is needed but in defence of who ever moved the post, you stated the vehicles were "available" and you did end up selling them so they were not for free. How else can they be catagorised other than "for sale". Also you did not own them, but rather were informing us of their availability, I would have thought MPA was the correct spot.

Just a thought. The Markets posts must be formatted in a particular way, or they will be deleted. Was that particular post formatted correctly? If not, doesn't make sense to move something that will be deleted. A much more sensible & mature procedure would be to inform the poster of that fact, & encourage them to reformat the post. If members are treated like adults, better outcomes may be achieved. The info;

Folks, why not just start your visit to the AULRO forum by clicking on "NEW POSTS".
That way you will see everything that has been posted since you were last here, and you can simply ignore what you don't want to read about and go to the threads you do.
It's that simple and then you don't have to whinge and whine about posts your not interested in, plus you have the added advantage of seeing where the moderators have moved your whinging post to

I find the search function frustrating but its better than nothing. I always check the search box /parts manual/workshop manual/ google etc before I come on here and bother you lot. I think if the headings were better categorised it would be of more use. How about when we post something we have to put some kind of categories in before we are allowed to post - a bit like tagging something in You Tube?

If I move something, I usually PM the poster where I moved it and why I moved it.
Most of the time it is discussed by the mods and the decision is then made, it's not just someone moving it on their own, other mods must agree whether it is moved, unless it's a clear cut case, but like I said, the poster is informed about if I move it.

please correct me if i have misinterpreted the tone of your post but as it read to me....
these guys are volunteers to put a pretty fine point on it.
they do their best to work within the guidelines that have been developed here over the last 10+ years
yes they change them if they don't appear to work....
yes they try to listen and learn and improve where they think it's needed
and they try to spend their time on here helping others by keeping the place organised so that newcomers have some sort of chance of finding stuff other than spending endless hours trawling through the copious number of posts in general chat that would much better serve the community if they were in a pigeon hole somewhere predictable so it doesnt take a week to find them.
more than happy to listen to constructive criticism and more than happy to implement changes that people think will be advantageous.
but i am not going to sit back and just let the people that spend their time here helping out be addressed without a modicum of respect.
if you see something out of place, report it so the moderators can mull it over
if you aren't happy something has been moved/modified/deleted ask the moderator for that area for a reason when you report it...

The mods here are people... Like the 'real' world they have their own distinctive personalities and beliefs, and believe it or not have a life AFK. ;)
They give their time freely to bring a level of order to the chaos - tidying up threads, filtering where appropriate and ensuring a high level of usability and search-ability..
Whilst some can occasionally appear a little over-zelous, they do this out of a passion for the place... They want to provide a great overall experience and I believe they do this very well.
To continually attack the mods with what is petty nonsense shows that some need to grow up themselves...
While on certain topics, we may disagree, I find the mods to be professional, courteous and fair.
I've had infractions for past posts - and each time a polite PM explaining where I crossed the line - never anything nasty.
Like the world of TV and Radio - if you do not like something, feel free to not participate, or to 'change the channel'...
If you see something you believe could be improved - then do the right thing - send a message to Inc or the Mod team with your suggestion - no need to be ridiculous or immature. Good ideas are often implemented...
The mods are balanced on the whole, discussing some topics / issues at length - and have had some heated discussions in certain cases. All with the intent of providing a warm, friendly environment for you the user / subscriber.
Mods understand some members are not tech savvy, and they accommodate this by tidying up threads or relocating them where appropriate. Hardly the end of the world.... And often benefit by reaching the OPs target audience...

A simple note to explain, is all that is needed. Not everyone searches the rabbit warren of the forum, many are not aware of many of the burrows. A more inclusive approach to moderation would solve the problem. How do you determine what is blatant, and what is just misunderstanding? Your argument is made invalid by this simple statement;
General Chat Almost anything goes, have a look and drop in a few lines. Think of it as a campfire chat with the kids around.
Glad you put your hand up, I think an inclusive approach to moderation would solve any perceived problem. And that is another story, I guess.

Andy, please understand I am not trying to cause trouble, but I can see there's a problem in our system of moderation. The fact some do, some don't, some seem to use personal prejudice , can create an atmosphere of angst that we don't need on this forum. First and foremost, we must have respect , both ways. We must never have moderators who will not interact with members, in a positive way. And, perhaps, more importantly, we must never tolerate members who abuse the mods. As for me, I never push, unless I'm pushed. And I will always push harder. We need a middle ground. And we need to be nicer to each other. Life is too short for us not to.

Its quite simple, a member has posted say 500 times or more and posts in general chat " what size tyres fit my D2" .. You have seen that same member post in the correct area before, ie D2, but yet they post in general chat knowing full well its a D2 specific question. That to me is blatant posting in the wrong area.
I report the post, mods agree its D2 specific the post is moved and a redirect is left so the O/P can see it... I don't send a PM explaining why it was moved as its quite obvious.
Now a new member posts the same question the same process applies but as well as leaving the re-direct I will send them a PM telling them there are specific area's for model specific questions.. quite simple really, no predujice , no argument. 2 mods need to agree before an action is taken, when you move a post the system gives you the re-direct option automatically so I think its standard practice for it to be done.
Remember the Mods also wish to enjoy the site as well , not spend all our time moving threads or posts , it works both ways.
Hope this clarifies my style of approach.

I startedthis debarkle, but after you haveing had 2 or 3 posts moved without any explanation or notificationIt becomes a bit off putting in some ways, I did not mean to start a war ofwords.
I like manyother enjoy most of the posts placed on hear some are very interesting I am one that have read the train section maytime as I find them interesting.
I suppose Iam adding more bad vibes, but just over48 hrs ago another member posted a sporting remark simular to mine that startedme off and as yet his has remained ingeneral chat. Can a mod please explain the difference my and his remark?.
I hold no animosity towards to the other poster or any one else.
Hodgo
Hi Hodgo,
if I could offer this explanation it might help. Some mods are very proactive in moving posts and others aren't. Not all mods are on the site every day and few have the time to read every post in each section, so it's possible that on occasion threads can get missed.
As other Mods have said, this is a ongoing topic in the Mods area and does on occasion even cause some angst even in there.
We are working on a system that will see threads that are more relative to other sections moved to their more relative section after they are no longer current and have dropped off the front page for a day or five.
We all hope these small changes that will be introduced soon will make things easier and more efficient for everyone on the forum.
By the way I don't believe anyone is unhappy that you started this thread. Open and frank discussion on how the forum works and or could possibly be improved is a good thing for the forum.

I've been reading this thread and until now not responded but after going over the whole thing, I think I'll just make a comment, although most of what I want to say has already been mentioned plenty of times, people keep coming back and picking up on certain things.
In general, this is one of the best Moderated sites I'm on (not being biased much here...:D). It is also clear that most people are generally happy with the moderation as there are only a handful of members that have actually posted in this thread that have said they are unhappy.
Does that mean the Mod team is perfect? No, we are all human and make the best judgments we can with the information on hand. The Mod team doesn't sit there and plot against members and do things just to tick them off.
Are there some valid points here? Absolutely and some of these things get discussed on a regular basis and we do endeavour to improve how we do things all the time.
At the end of the day can you keep everyone happy all the time? No, never - life and people are like that, so no matter what we do, someone will always see that it isn't being done as well as it could. If we can keep most people happy most of the time, then I think we are doing a good job job overall and must have the balance about right. We can always fiddle around the edges and try to fine tune things though so anything constructive is a good thing, but please don't think we don't care - we actually care more than most otherwise we wouldn't spend so much of our own time helping out around here. :)

Not at all.. Are the people ( who are very few I might add ) that continue to post everything in general chat that inflexible they cant post in the correct area?
I have no problems with the approach I take as a mod. Since I have been doing it, which is far less than most other Mods , I have seen most of the mods attacked personally , seen Inc have to deal with disgruntled users who have pushed him to the point where most people would give up and shut the site down , yet the Inc and the mods log in daily and try and keep this great site running smoothly.
Keep constructive idea's coming its good for all users and if it makes the place better then we are all winners.

One persons attack, is anothers defence. Less aggressive moderation produces more moderate behaviour from those who may have a more progressive attitude to the forum. This is not 1950, we are indeed, in the 21st century. Adapt, or become irrelevant. Those who are doing the pushing , as you say, remind me of schoolboys complaining to the master. the World is on the cusp of change, as is the forum , and if we don't adjust to that change, as a group, we will fade away , just another group of old men who did not get it. We have a choice. Snipe away at each other, carrying our grudges into our conversations, or make a proper effort to leave all that behind, and focus on a positive relationship , working together , using our common thread , The Land Rover , as the glue that keeps the ship together. As I said before, if some one pushes me, I push back . If there is no pushing, we can live in harmony. Even with the schoolboys.

Bob, I have absolutely no idea what you are ranting about.
This is, without question, one of the best and by far, fairest moderated sites I have seen on the net.
Everybody gets a say, and contrary to your comments about "AGGRESSIVE MODERATION" and "SCHOOLBOYS COMPLAINING TO THE MASTER", if a complain is made, the moderators seem to be making pretty fair decisions on whether to take action or not.
Hell knows how many times I have been involved in heated exchanges, and in the vast majority of cases, it has been a welcome intervention from the moderators that usually beings things back to earth.
In my personal opinion, this is one of the best run forums on the net, frequented by a pretty high class of people because it is so well run, so I don't understand your comments at all?
Again, because of the very way this forum is run, you don't see the typical knuckle draggers and rednecks here, that you find on many other 4x4 forums.

I think one of the biggest issues with people getting upset with each other here and with other forums is that the written word can appear stark and bleak and contain no emotion from being spoken. It also lacks the warmth and humour associated with the spoken word and the nuances you get from looking into the eyes of the speaker. I reckon a lot of it is all down to being misunderstood. I'll try and sum it up by saying I get ribbed by the BIL for being a Fat Bastard - but he's bigger than I am and he says it with a smile. If we were sitting each side of a computer screen and he said that it wouldn't work at all would it.

DOUBLE STANDARDS OR OK FOR SOME AND NOT OTHERS ????[happycry]
I started this post because I was felt that I and others were being singled out by some moderators onthis forum, My last post to be moved was a very simple comment regarding the NRL grand final.
Here are some examples as to why it looks this way and gets up my nose
Today :- I always thought Bathurst was a sporting advent where is it Gen chat
The post regarding HID or LED HEADLIGHTS, to my way of thinking it should have been under technical ?.
Foot ball finished bring on the cricket. Sport again another comment not unlike mine.
V8s at Sandown Sport again.
These are just a few resent ones that have been posted in gen chat and stayed
I know there is more than one mod on this sight and not all think alike BUT it does seam that some may go over board . In having this whinge I found that I made an incorrect post again regarding my Bushmaster model, I did not realise that there was a section regarding models. until about 20 minutes ago

Hodgo,
If you read back over this thread, you will see quite a few people suggesting that current items of interest might at least be left in general chat while live before being moved to the appropriate area.
Do you think rather than "Double Standards"... this may be the mod team trying to listen to the population and deliver what the majority want?
With around 5,000 active members, it's not easy to please everyone all the time......

Well said, I have to say I am very pleased with the moderation of this site lately. Not only is there respect being shown to members, [ in the form of an explanation of why ], but there seems a lot less of aggressive behaviour between members. Long may it continue. The core of AULRO is spot on, it's only the fringes that need work. And, from time to time, we all visit the fringe. But, we are working on it, as every healthy society does.
