Hilux problem

My 1993 Hilux has a strange problem. I suspect contacts on the ignition key barrel but I am not sure. The problem is that it almost never starts when I turn the key, until I release it and turn it for the second time. It then starts every time. I have fitted a new battery but problem continues. Am I on the right track? Jim

Dash lights on then go out on starter contact. No cranking at all

Seems strange that on the second attempt it fires normally

Worn contacts in the starter motor,the current is having to jump too bigger gap,eventually nothing will happen.See if contact kits are available for the starter motor,would be surprised if they arent.
