Hi all, SWMBO is looking at Land Rovers again, which is good news for me. :)
She likes the idea of a 4x4 Perentie, but it would need power steering. No big deal, I'll get that sorted if/when I find the right vehicle, but SWMBO wants to test drive one - preferably with power steering fitted, but that's not the end of the world, she really wants to feel what it's like to drive.
Anywhere in Melbourne or Western Vic sort of area.
Thanks heaps - Gav

Just drive a Defender they would not be any different except for the noise level:p

Yes, I thought about that, but I want her to get the whole experience - camo paint and all. That way, if she says yes, then there are no comebacks later... :D

Wouldn't you want to sell her on a quieter Defender claiming its the same as the Perentie thus ensuring you get the wagon regardless? ;)

Ok, got a lead from Brad at KLR about a Perenite that he fitted their PAS and turbo kit to here in Melbourne. Been chatting to the owner and we will be heading over for a test drive maybe in the next few weeks - he's just dropped it back to his Mechanic after a trip up the Canning stock route, but his Mechanic just had eye surgery so he has no idea how long it will be there now.
All good though, we will get there. The owner couldn't praise Brad and KLR enough about the work he did, so I'll give them another plug.
His exact words were - ' If you buy one, don't **** around, take it straight up there and get the power steering and turbo fitted - you won't regret it' :)
Will advise the outcome once we've been over there.

Hey Gav, one of mine has PAS but not Turbo the other std armstrong steering - good comparison, welcome to come up for a drive anytime.
Turbo would be good if you need the acceleration if not save your money but PAS is a huge improvement.
The guy who said same as a defender - wrong - heaps different to drive, different motor, different gearing, sit higher than a defender, no rear sway bars etc etc
cheers

Thanks Scott, I was going to call you as Mick mentioned he thought one of yours had PAS. Are they up in Ararat? Might do a road trip up there if I can get the time - I'm not sure how long this local one will be off the road for yet.
Cheers.

We've got a really nice looking unit that's started work in our court (Clayton) just up from us. Now I have to see my dream every day :D :(
Haven't spoken to him yet, can't seem to catch him, but his workmates bag him out over it all the time apparently.

Everyone says that until they fit a turbo. Then they wish they had done it years earlier.
Agree on the rest. All the 2.x engines are completely different to drive due to the lack of torque right from idle that the isuzu has.

If you're going to keep the vehicle long term, then I don't see it as an issue. I doubt you'd get your money back by doing these mods then trying to sell the unit on, but if we buy one, we will keep it. PAS and turbo upgrade will run to $8 and something K by the sound of it, a worthwhile investment IMO. I'll have a cracking LR that will last me years for under $20K. Good value IMO considering how well Defenders are holding their value.
You probably don't want to know how much I've spent on parts for the series 3 then if we're talking about over capitalising.... :D

Not necessarily. All depends how much work you are willing to do yourself. Less than $3k for all the parts to fit turbo and PAS.

Yes, but part of the deal with this one is that it isn't a project, so if I buy one for SWMBO, it will get shipped straight to KLR for the mods. :)

No offence, but do you like throwing money out the window? Oh hang on, your a sparky, so money's no object😆.
As ben said, $3k tops in parts, weekend to fit it!
Heck, i'll do it for $7k😊

Yes, I could do it myself, but in this case I won't be. KLR's turbo kit is very well sorted, and I have waaaaay too much on my plate to worry about this job - if it even happens.

Hmmm was only having a stir! 😊
Is there anyone more local to you that could do it instead of having to send it all that way?

Well, as I've beenin Corowa for a week, surrounded by great vehicles - including Perenties, the inevitable had to happen. Struck up a conversation with the owner of a very well kitted out GS Perentie that has the KLR power steering conversion on it.
A deal was struck - SWMBO can take the Perentie for a drive in return for him getting a fang of the 101 - DONE!
So, a very nervous start to proceedings sees SWMBO carefully idling it out of the caravan park onto the road. With a little instruction 'Give it some welly' off she goes. Went for a run around town and by the time we got back, there was a very wide grin on her face and 'That's really cool - just get me one, no problems' and 'well, if I can't beat them, I'll join them' :D
Soooo, the L322 will be prepared for sale and the wheels will be in motion to procuring a 4x4 GS. Should get enough from the sale of the L322 to do this, but I can tip some extra in if needed depending on what is found.
So, next year, we will have 2 ex Military vehicles to bring to Corowa. :)
What a result!

How did her left leg hold up? I find even I get tired after an hour or two of reasonable driving.
Not to mention my left ankle, but that because I broke the crap out of it and never got full strength/movement back.

Sounds like Gav and Mick are going to have a formidable war machine in their little area of Mexico with the gear they are gathering.

I believe one of the Perenties at Corowa had been fitted with a power assisted clutch. I didn't actually get a look at the set up. It is something I have been fantasizing about to do with mine as I have a dodgy knee and it doesn't get along that well with the Perentie clutch! ;)
Cheers, Mick.

Something like that is pretty high on my wish list. Beats out p/s and air-con for top spot actually. One day when I win the lotto :p.

She was fine with the clutch - said it was lighter than the x trail - which gives her a bit of grief in traffic. It's about the same as the 101's which isn't too bad IMO.

You're joking right?! Either an X-trail has an insanely heavy clutch, or mine in very heavy.
I'll have to find someone in Brisbane with one and take it for a drive to compare, but I find the clutch very heavy.
maybe I'm weak :(

...You should have spoken to Geoff "The Booger" he had my Perentie at Corowa (fitted with KLR PAS). you wouldn't have had to part with the 101 even for a second! ;)
In relation to a power assisted clutch, all you need is to fit and in-line booster, something like a PBR VH44 while there are a number of models most have and an output pressure of 820psi.
The VH40 is both physically larger with a greater boost so probably too much pressure for a decent feel of your clutch.

While the X trail does have a heavy clutch, it's not insanely heavy. The Perenties I have driven have what I would consider a normal clutch feel - same as the 101 (it's the same box after all) the Rangie before the Auto went in, any Series LR I have driven. Maybe heavy compared to a modern small car, but I don't really know as I haven't driven any like that.
I just asked SWMBO if again about it - she said she didn't notice it was heavy at all.

I did chat to Geoff briefly and I knew he had your Perentie with him, but the thought didn't cross my mind at the time...
I don't mind giving people a drive of the 101 - Rod loved it, although he is a tall fellow with long legs and it didn't exactly fit him well. :D.

There certainly is an art to it and watching people try for the first time is always fun. I find the best way is to start by putting your left foot on the wheel step, claiming up and putting your right foot onto the floor near the accelerator then your left foot can slide easily past the steering column.:). Saves having to amputate. :D

to reduce myself to that, I'd have to lose my left leg first.
I suffered really badly from muscle loss when I broke my ankle and had the leg in a cast. doc actually said it was some of the worst he had seen and that I would probably only recover 70% or so strength and my ankle movement is reduced too, so maybe that's it.
One day I'll get a chance to try out another Perentie to compare.

Thumbs up for the PAS Gav.
Finished fitting mine today and it's a breeze after the Armstrong!
Haven't had it out on the road as yet, only driven it around the property and reversed the camper trailer with it......so much easier to manoeuvre.
Simple enough to fit too!
Cheers, Mick.
