Hi,
Just wondering, what is a straight swap, for the old series 3 type ????
I have only the one fitted to the Holden motor, looks the same type as those fitted.
But I think it reads 15amp ???? Would this be correct for the 186 Holden ????
Any good for the 2 1/4 petrol. ( pushes out nearly 14 volts )
Was going to have a look in the. Local car yard, for one.
Or do I fit a new after market one.
Thanks

Up to you - I went to a local auto electrician and told him I wanted a replacement for the alternator in a Series 3. "No problems! $150". It does not have a brand on it, but seems to work well.

If it's a Bosch on the 186 it should be 35 Amp.
However some of the Belmonts of the era (HK, HG, HT) had Lucas electrics, but I wold expect they were still at least 35 amp.

I think I purchased what John did, an alternator with no brand. Sadly mine cost a tad more than $150, more like $200 from roverparts (http://roverparts.com.au/inc/sdetail/4733)

It fitted straight in and hooked right up to the existing two wires and works correctly. I pulled off the original alternator and it had squeaky bearings. I pulled it apart to replace them and looked at the general condition inside and out, which was awful, hence went with the new one.

Specs here.
It is 34amp, or should that be 34 Lucas Amps ;)

This bloke commented "That's the old price, I'll have to charge more for the one I get to hold in stock."

Bosch make an alternator that is the same size and mounting pattern as the Lucas 15ac, but with more output and better components.

Run the battery down a bit. At a fast idle, with all accessories and lights on, use a clamp meter on the output wire of the alternator.

Don't use a digital multimeter to check amps as they usually only go to about 10 amps. Amp clamps are the go.

I don't know the number for it, but it is listed as the Bosch substitute for a Lucas 15ac.

I used a Lucas 17ACR on my 2a

Works really well, but the longer body mean I had to fab up a mounting bracket, using the S3 cast bracket had the alternator hitting the chassis mounts
