View Full Version : Is Star Trek better than Star Wars?

I think so. The special effects might be clunkier at times, but the scripts are certainly more intelligent and the acting is far superior.

I think your nuts!:)
Personally I think its an age thing, I was a kid in the late 70's early 80's, star wars was huge, action figures and all! Kind of like KISS:D

If you are talking William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley then its Star Trek - hands down. It all went downhill from there.

Definitely, although Picard was also excellent.

I believe Star Trek was much better than Star Wars. I never understood all the hype around Star Wars, even to this day. But even better that Star Trek was the original (first season) of Space 1999. Loved that show.

Mick, Mick, Mick!
This should have been in CA. Religion and politics pale to insignificance compared to the Star Wars/Star Trek debate.
I love them both.
I see Star Wars as a damned good western. Good guys, bad guys, bars and gunfights. Purely entertainment. In this, it does it exceptionally well.
For me Star Trek makes you think. It tackles big issues in a space opera format. Think about it. You wouldn't think an American show about a community of people work for knowledge and the betterment of society not for financial gain and are fed, clothed and housed by the state would be accepted in America.

Star Wars, good.
Star Trek, eh. Hit and miss.
Firefly = Best.

Star Trek is just a bunch of commie atheists hooning around the galaxy. I managed to get both politics and religion into that sentence....now for sexism. My favourite Vulcan by far is the female lead T'pol in the TV show Enterprise which is the prequel series about the very first starship Enterprise. They didn't even have transporter technology.

On the other hand, Star Wars has a certain force about it. :)

I preferred the evil T'Pol in the dark universe.

Lots of things were better in the dark universe.

Firefly.....people dressed as cowboys complete with 6 shooters, flying spaceships that land on other planets where the towns look like Dodge City and the people still ride horses. How did he get the money to make the season that did get made? I can hear the people seeing it for the first time mid season saying WTF? To us syfy diehards....cowboys in space? No problem. :D

Star Trek - Science Fiction
Star Wars - Adventure movies set in space
Firefly - Cowboys and Indians set in space
I enjoy all of them, but one's not better than the other - they're different.

I also grew up with the original Star Wars films so it will always be the best films ever for me, closely followed by the first Terminator movie.
Star Trek TNG was during my student days and love that too, sometimes re-watch the whole series even now. Still good. First contact was the best film, in fact introducing the Borg was a stoke of genius, love anything with the Borg in it, even Voyager, especially the last episode.

I love both Star Wars and Star Trek - for different reasons.
Can I throw in a few other space Sci Fi's that I love?
- Lexx (If you haven't seen this, do yourself a favour - it is bloody weird though)
- Red Dwarf (What can I say - one of my favorite comedy's)
- Babylon 5 (Quite complicated, but worth it when you got heavily involved in it - cool enemy - the Shadow)
- Blakes 7 (An oldie, but had some very original ideas for its time - Mick, when are we having another DVD night on this?:))

I grew up with original star trek series on tv with bill shatner. Loved star wars. Never even heard of firefly. Also loved stargate, all of it including stargate universe. Still dream about 7 of 9 :p. Gotta get out and see new starwars movie, will be great. Dont get me started on doc Who. Love it. All sci fi with a decent sorta story that is reasonably believeable is coooool
Cheers Rod :D

Ok. Soon.
What episode did we get up to last time? Yep, Lexx is just plain weird.
Now that we're mentioning other Sci-Fi series, what about Babylon 5, Excalibur, oh and Andromeda.
I would love to have an Eagle spacecraft, a real one. I'd swap a 101 for one.

Lexx - i loved the pleasure droid, she was pretty sexy.

Lexx- Zev was not a droid. She was a human who was to be dna re-mapped to a pleasure slave but a cluster lizard got into the machine (hence the lizard like costume and the fact she needs to eat all the time).
Startrek! All original stories (bar the new franchise which I like)
Star Wars, space version of an old Japanese samurai movie called the hidden fortress!
Blake's 7... Have every episode.
What about Space 1999!

..... OOoooooooooooooooooooooooo :eek2:
:ohyes:
I'll confess ... Trekkie Tragic ... Star Trek (all of 'em), Stargate, Atlantis ... I loved the way that they all roll on and are linked in some way from a previous version, set in a different time ...
Best of all, to a large extent, they ARE believable ... In the future, OF COURSE all this will be possible !! :p
... 7 of 9

I love nearly all sci-fi. It's like a choice between different types of pizza.
They all taste great, but I have my favourites.
Firefly being the shiniest pepperoni pizza of all.
Other toppings I like:
Early Dr Who (up to Peter Davidson)
Battlestar Galactica
The Tomorrow People
X-Files
Space 1999
Life on Mars (and Ashes to Ashes)
HHGTTG- TV series
Pretty much all of the Start Trek series' were good but the Trek movies were doo-doo.
The Clone Wars is an excellent series, too.

Hi,
Stardate late October 1968, Ballarat Vic.
10 years old. Just had a week in the Grampians with my family, staying at my father's parent's place in the Rat on the way back to Melb.
Have the front room to sleep in with my brother, complete with non-parental controlled B&W TV.
About 11pm this unannounced show comes on the local Nine affiliate.
It was Startrek getting some sort of trot out in the bush.
Blew my mind. (remember Armstrong hadn't got to the moon then)
Was first broadcast in Melb on GTV 9 about a month later.
cheers, DL

no one has mentioned Farscape it was weird but for some reason I liked it and have seen a lot of Sci Fi used to read it when at school and remember when the Sci Fi section was small,
Read a couple of books a week (unless overhauling a auto trans) sometimes, do not sleep a lot now just down load books did at one stage have 1500 books on my book shelf but ended up selling them on ebay years ago ( a few went to east timor some army personal bought heaps off me).

Farscape. Yes. It was an excellent show. Proved the Aussies could produce an excellent Sci Fi series as well.

The success of a franchise is often told by it's parodies. Galaxy Quest immediately comes to mind. I thought that movie was a great parody.
But!!!!!
Google "Star Wreck". A fantastic parody. Star Trek vs Babylon 5.
