The war on terror is impacting on us now. The border force tried and failed, now the police force are getting into the act.
Victoria Police to use special powers to conduct random weapons searches in Dandenong - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-04/police-warn-dandenong-locals-of-random-weapons-searches/7001074)
But it is for our own protection the say: because we are not allowed to protect ourselves.

Interesting. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. Why do you need to carry a weapon for "self defense". I don't get that at all. The couple of times I've ended up deep in the smelly stuff ....... There wasn't a snowmans chance in hell I'd have had time to get any sort of weapon out (just see how long it takes to reach into your pocket and try to get a folding knife out).
I wonder what they'd make the the SOG multi-tool that lives on my belt :wasntme:

No. Is there a bit of racial profiling going on there you reckon? Or is the place just full of knobs?
Random breath testing for motor car drivers is bad enough, but random - in the street- body searches are on a different level.
I have been chatted about wearing a letherman on my belt also (makes me wonder who the real knobs are)

I used to catch a train out to heidleburg often. I never felt unsafe. Then again I'm a white male between the age of 20 and 50 ..... so the least likely target of all the population. No-one picks a target to mug that might beat the living crap out of them after all :wasntme:
seriously, I'm pretty happy in a society where you don't have to worry about poeple carrying weapons. Even the nutters don't seem to have access or the brain power to get there hands on weapons out here (unlike the USA where they can just mail order themselve a machine gun or three from the local hardware store :o )

Nup. No racial profiling. They're just randomly stopping people in the streets of Dandenong.

Honestly i grew up there and was never a problem then mind you almost 40 years ago at 14 i worked in the Dandy Market at 4 am used to ride my bike there.
I still live in the area with no fear of being stabbed nor shot.
Now it has sunk to all time lows we are told drugies and totaly different cultures .
I would`nt say it was that bad that they need these laws pretty much any area that has this multi cultural problems so we are told so Dandy might just be a trial im guessing:cool:

No racial profiling - it's been like that as long as I can remember - which goes back to having the snot beaten out of me at in the train station car park one Saturday night - by Caucasians incidentally. Another time I was there with a friend - he parked his car and we walked up the street to get something to eat - before we had gone 100 meters we watched someone drive past us - in my mates car...:D

As above, just personal experience. I actually don't find it as bad now as it was 25 years ago, although when we have conferences in town there is almost always one of the work cars damaged. It wasn't you that beat me up at the train station was it? :D

Agreed. I too don't understand why an operation to try and make our streets and lives safer could be a negative thing.
It always seems to be those with something to hide or the snivel libertarians that cry help help I'm being oppressed.
If the cops use excessive force to undertake the search then there would be grounds for complaints but simply stopping random individuals to conduct a search for illegal weapons seems perfectly OK by me.
I heard a guy on the radio the other day say he was going through the security checks at the airport and a woman and a man of middle eastern appearance were stopped for the random powder swipe where they run a small wand over you and your hand luggage then place in a machine that is able to detect any gunpowder of explosives residue. The woman was complaint and stood there while the test was conducted but the bloke started yelling that " I am being targeted for my Islamic faith". The guy doing the test told him that this was a random thing but the guy kept going off.
The old adage is if you have nothing to hide then why complain.

There has always been bashings, stabbings, shootings.............. Per head of population they are probably at an all time low, even taking into account the rapid rise in manufactured drug use. It is just so heavily reported.
If your concerned about self defense ... I'd suggest a self defense type course. Avoidance of getting into these sorts of situations is always best. As I said before it's unlikely any male under the age of 60 is going to get into trouble either way. No would be mugger wants to risk getting the living **** beaten out of them. So they will always pick a target they have already decided will not fight back. (eg: the elderly or a female). What a lovely society we live in right?
I have sure as hell been teaching my children self defense either way. Especially my young girls. After all I not always there when there out and about at school etc.

So you would be happy to have the (police) stop you at any time, any where for a random body search just to make yourself feel safe?

There simply not going to unless you look like someone thats upto no good. The whole idea of this is to give them the power to check poeple that are causing problems.
No I don't have an issue with being checked for weapons. There not taking my bloody multi-tool though... I'd be lost without it :wasntme:

Happy as a Larry to be stopped and searched. If it means my wife and kids can travel more safely.
If you were not born to be a sheep you could be a lamb to the slaughter.
As has been said, I can't see some cop stopping everyone to check. It just gives them the power and right to check on individuals they suspect of being up to no good. If that is too subjective a notion for you to grasp then I am afraid this is not going to help you

What happened to the concept of being presumed innocent??
tact
8th December 2015, 01:25 PM
Random checks are not the same as picking out suspicious types. As I explained to my son when he was 4-5yo - not every bad guy looks like a bad guy. In fact if they did we'd have no issues, "look! A bad guy, grab him!"
And of course the other side of that is that not all those who look like good guys actually are good guys.
So random checks may be better than just checking people who look sus. Then presumption of guilt or innocence is irrelevant. Random

I've seen "random" checks at the airport where little old ladies are pulled aside and checked, just to make it look good and show they have checked someone (numbers) as is done with RBT.
The police already have the power to stop "suspicious" persons.
This new thing is just a show of power. And to publicly announce 24 hours before hand where the searches are taking place is plain ludicrous.

If you've had some basic training and a good sense of situational awareness and understand how people behave dependent on culture and belief, on home turf or abroad you can quickly spot trouble with time to respond.
However local plod barely master the art of verbal judo, so the instruction would be rather candid at briefing I should imagine, "If it has a hajib, a beard looks a bit dark search it". Not renowned for their cultural sensibilities. I'd rather this not occur as it works to quickly alienate certain individuals. Only takes one more instance of this to push someone to the tipping point of wanting to get back at the obvious face of oppression, the Caucasian looking person.

Exactly, that's why they stop and search little old ladies; to make it look like they are doing something.

I copped the random check at Townsville (IIRC) Airport a few years ago. I set off an alarm for explosive substance, the operator shrugged it off as "probably the washing powder ya missus uses.", without further question. What's the point?

I get stopped for these almost every time I fly - which can be a fair bit with work. The bit I don't get is how agro some people get when asked to do this - I see people all the time protest, yell and carry on about their rights when asked to do the explosives residue test. No idea why - it just sets them up to be grumpy all day.

I've been randomly searched, randomly swabbed for explosives. Had the full body scan.
Been frisked too. Everywhere from Korea to Turkey to Malaysia to Sydney.
It's not a big deal. I can see the issue for profiling to occur but I like to think there are still some decent cops out there!
Tbh I think we've already lost.
We can't move one way because of overtly PC ******* crying discrimination at every action taken, and we can't go the opposite way because something WILL happen.
I agree with Mudmouse, there are no clear winners, just a murkey shade of grey

Before I moved here permanently I stayed in the Atura Doveton, most days or nights there was some guest or pimp being detained outside the front door.
Mind you the mascot boar at Hog's Breath was asking for a steak knife through his snout last time I was there. ****ing mime artists.
