I have been looking to replace my old F truck ute that I use for fixing my rental houses up. I have seen loads of nice looking 300tdi's sold privately thousands of Km's away, nothing seems to come up sensibly priced close by. It seems if it is thousands of Km's away loads of low km trucks go for 10-16 grand with loads of extras and seemingly well looked after. If it is close by then I keep seeing stuff close to 500,000km for 25k!!!!! Err I dont think so!
I have seen a few nice looking wagons but that is typical as I need a ute, sods law I guess.
Maybe in Queensland utes get more of a flogging I dont know but there seems to be quite a few heaps of junk for sale here.
Anyone want to sell me their pride and joy?
I was going to get a Perentie, but I am now looking for something which can double as a second car so fuel consumption is more an issue.

Are there any in Vic that float your boat? Have you priced transport?
I bought a car in Brisbane because it was what I wanted. Had it trucked down.

You can always make one out of a 110 station wagon :)

(and sell me the roof)

I'd widen the search area and be prepared to freight it up or fly/drive and have an adventure.

If you spot anything in Adelaide, I'm happy to take a look.

Good 300TDis cost more than you'd think is right and bad ones will cost you more than you think is fair (to fix).

I did think about interstate, but so many cars look online, but a heap when you see them for real and it would be a pain in the butt to fly interstate to see a car that is total junk.
I dont mind paying for a really really good one, but over 20k for half a million clicks is way too much IMO.
Thanks again

I have a 300 steel heavy duty tray with 272kms on clock. In Adelaide.

Have done steering box, rad, water pump, HD clutch, pinions seals, serviced front swivel hubs - refurbed one, new turner performance head, new pads all round, new front rotors, bottom engine rebuild 10kms ago, rebuilt r380, rebuilt trans case, had Welsh plug replaced behind water pump, new larger intercooler, resprayed 4 years ago, wrangler MTR's Kevlar 265's 85% tread (great tires), new clutch master cylinder and a lot more odds and ends. Oils changed out regular( just did difs, trans, gear box, engine). Engine is clean as a whistle. Has done 4000km since refurbs of driveline. 1500 since new head/intercooler.

Just drove 1300kms to Adelaide from ACT and didn't miss a beat.

Got it for 13000, spent about 15000 on it. I would take 20k but no less as it's into me too much. Get new 90 in Feb so would part with it but prob regret later lol.

Another option to consider is;

british-4x4-auto (http://www.british4x4auto.com/)

Brendan knows his Landys and would put any Adelaide car you might be considering on his hoist to take a good look at it. In my experience his pricing is more than reasonable and you can usually book a car in with him relatively easily.

Would you say this would be the best rover mechanic around Adelaide? I'm new here and need someone dependable for future reference.

Thanks

I have been looking for a while as I want a really good example. 20k is a lot really, but I suppose it depends on condition. Not too worried if it is 4 door or two both have advantages and disadvantages. I want something reliable that I can use daily for farm and my rental repairs.
Thanks

Hi Mick,
I did an Aus wide search and there is not much at the moment, maybe people are concentrating on Christmas at the moment and not selling their cars.. If I know the car is good freight is a good option, our fire truck (TD5) didnt cost that much at all to get to Queensland from Western Aus.

I will take some for you. Yeah I totally understand that, all the work I have done is to ensure it gets another 20yrs+ of motoring ahead of it. It's a great truck and with new gasflowed head, gear box and transfer case so that's why it's beyond the 15k they normally get for a decent example. Pretty damn fuel efficient too

Darn it, I have been looking for months too!!!
I will give Alec's some more thought when I have a minute, but it has been hectic, just dived home from outlaws to pick up a sick cow I have been lifting up for days, then back it outlaws (an hour a way) for dinner, Christmas is such hard work!!! Alec has done a fair bit to the ute, but it is also 20k and it needs a bit of tlc inside on the seats and my main issue is no aircon here it is hot and wet so aircon is a must so I would have to budget to get that fitted too which is a couple of grand, seats need a recover plus getting it to me and registered when it arrives so if all goes well and I will be up for 25 k at the very least which really is a lot of money.
Two door is not all I am interested in 4 door 130 is also fine.

haha yes reading this thread is making me laugh. I had to fly to Noosa from Sydney to buy a 130 that needs a total rebuild. The 15 hour drive home, with no tools and no plan B was great fun - so dont underestimate the adventure of a long haul to get one.

As some have said, a good one will come around every few months -but murphys law will guarantee they are never close to where you live. gumtree seem to be a better online market than the main stream carsales etc - and I've seen a few very good ones on gumtree for 12k- 15k with a lot of work done to them.

Good luck mate !

Bit high in km, but a good price, no aircon though, I will have a think as that price gives room to do stuff if needed. Ideally I would love to find a good low km truck that has been well looked after.
Been a sod of a day so much for Christmas day... Last night picked up cow got changed went to inlaws. 6am woke up drove an hour to pick up cow again, then back to inlaws for lunch. Came back a couple of hours ago, cow fallen in only dodgy part of paddock typical!! Cow clearly been down for ages as bloated I was just in time. Get loader start to set her up in sling and monsoon rain starts sooo wet
Move cow to yards in poring rain get my F truck to collect all the stuff, bags of hay and shelter for cow, darn heap of ***** wont start!!!! I lay down under her in four inches of water trying to fix the bleeping thing now cold and super wet. Cow all good, now, but I am so over my F truck and rather over Christmas day too.

Thanks Alec,
The dry has hit us hard too, one of my best cows (always the way) we found dead by the top dam a few days ago and two registered breeders we bought before the dry are missing presumed dead. I rolled out a lot of hay just before the rain and there was two cows soooooo covered in ticks (they have just come out the hills not seen them for months) and thin big time I hope they will be ok. As soon as the rain stops they will get sprayed and separated and fed up if they make it. I am determined the cow I have been working on will make it too we cant loose anymore. I have three dams they have never been empty the massive one has a six inch deep pool in it and the dam is 300 meters by 150 meters and 8 meters deep. The front dam has an island it has never had and again it is maybe a foot or so deep. The back dam is a horrible sight..
Anyway finally raining I hope we get a lot more.

Yeah I hope you get as much as possible bar nasty flood.

Mum's big dam started off the summer at 1/8th full so didnt bode well. Sheep, horses, cattle and a massive bull to water through summer. They had to make a hard decision and offload 50% stock which was a shame.

Could be carting mains water up into to the paddocks pretty soon when the 4 big tanks dry up. Nearly just lost my dog as he drank some of the dam water and must have got a dose of algae or some bacteria that had grown in the heat and stagnation. He was crook!

I was going to get a Perentie, but I am now looking for something which can double as a second car so fuel consumption is more an issue.
Chris

Is there really much difference between a Perentie and a 300 tdi Deefer fuel economy wise? From what I've read, Perentie owners are generally getting around 10 -11 L/100, so maybe 1 L/100 more than a 300tdi. My 120 - which is about 3t with camper, roof rack, tools, accessories, BFG mud terrains - normally gets around 11-12.5 L/100. Arguably too, the Isuzu is cheaper to maintain (no timing belt, less prone to head gasket failure) so any increased spending on fuel is likely to be offset by that. Don't get me wrong, there are some good reasons to choose the 300tdi Defender over the 4bd1 Perentie but I'm not sure that cheaper running costs is one of them.

From what I have read with the original diff a Perentie gets more like 6km/l and a 300tdi gets more like 10km/l so there is a big difference. Also having driven a Perentie 6x6 as much as I loved it it is rather noisy over 80km/h so if I am going to do any km in it it is not going to be very comfortable.

Not many 300tdi's have decent aircon Chris, they are mostly pretty shot and were never much good anyway. You would most likely need to add an aftermarket unit somehow. Easier in a 110 behind/above rear seats, not sure how you would do it on a trayback? Through rear window?

If you're looking at 20K+ for a good 300tdi, you might be better getting an early model puma 130 with decent aircon?

Hmm, good to know.. The aftermarket ones are quite big, if the 300tdi ones are as good as the td5 ones then for what I will be using it for it will probably do as our fire truck aircon is just acceptable probably not for Cairns though.
I already have a Puma, a new one and I was looking for something simple and easy to fix as my work ute.

Yes a conundrum re aircon. I faced same dilemma with my 300tdi. Tried many times over the years to repair gas leaks with no luck. Ended up putting up with the heat - often 40 degrees in northern oz. (interesting how you're happier to get out of the car in hot weather with no aircon!)

Replacement of all components was only option, or I have seen a good conversion mounted on cargo barrier, but that may be complex too.

Fixing would be preferable if it has aircon fitted, I know an auto electrician quite well so he will do me a good deal whatever needs changing. Fitting a new system will still not be cheap though even with mates rates.
I just manage to get the missus in my Puma if I have any hope of getting her in a 300tdi I need to get aircon somehow :)

Part of the problem with the Tdi and TD5 era A/C is the heater box.

The seals fail around the heater core/header tanks and then they suck in hot air from the engine bay.

Fix that and a truck cab and even a crew cab the AMC system works OK.
The wagons just had too big a volume IMO.

I'm not a fan of the system, I ended up ripping mine out as I found the condenser partially blocks air to the radiator and I/C and the sheer size under the dash is a PITA.
One day I'll make my own system up, for the crew cab it'll be a fan coil unit in the roof at the rear with a bigger condenser that has a coarser fin pitch. The compressor size is more than adequate.
It's the fin pitch on the condenser and maybe the slight lack of width that causes the air flow problem to the rad in my testing.
It's just an aftermarket/universal Sanden condenser, not vehicle specific.

As mentioned ac will be your sticking point. First thing I did to my 130 was rip out the piece of junk and then mount a 22l air tank under the drivers seat. With a 90-130psi pressure switch proper air is more useful than ac. Just put a small fridge in place of the centre console and leave it on always... solar panel on roof to keep heat loading down. Will always have cold drinks at hand.

looks like clear silicone has gone into the roof channel - thats the wrong stuff to use - should be a sikaflex or similar. No surprise it leaks - but its probably not from the roof channel lol :-)

Door frames on that door are kaput - so expect to reweld for a proper repair.

If it looks bad from the skin, its much worse when you get under the doortrim.

that aside, these are pretty common issues if it checked out mechanically and was the right price, it might be worth a punt.

Caveat- you've seen what IM working on - anything looks better than that :D

How many times have I heard that. How many times has it happened to me. I dordled on a Rapier Resupply trailer, and PeterP's missus beat me to it. When I saw my first Track trailer, I bought it and then thought about the condition.
Sometimes you just have to snap it up.

I was so tempted to do just that and probably I would have been fine, but if the guy was dishonest I could have ended up with a piece of junk. So annoying if it had been local it would be mine now..
Oh wel lmy 300 tdi is still waiting for me somewhere :)

You will get there Chris! I was beaten to the punch 3 times before getting my hands on my 130, the best part of being patient is the extra $$ you save for kitting it out 👍

Dont worry though I will try to get a td5 closer if I go that way as there are more around. I would still love a 300 tdi though if I can get one, but I am starting to loose hope on that one.

I'd hold out for a 98 model with 300K or less.

For what price though MrLandy? I've been following the market closely for 130's for about 12 months now and I don't think I have seen a single '98 130 with less than 300K in that time - Ive also seen plenty of 130's for 15-20k or more that are in that ballpark of K's.

The '98 130 I bought had 345k on the clock and needs a total ground up rebuild - compare that to my D1, which is a '93 you would swear the D1 was 10 years newer, not 5 years older....now, if you are selling a '98 130 with less that 300k on the clock, that could be a different story :D

Interesting isn't it. Tdi 130 prices are definately rising. Certainly not easy to find an unworked /low km 130. Patience I guess.

Or CL you may have to settle for a Td5.

I have seen quite a few with 250k or less, but I have not been quick enough as they have been in another state.

yes true that, I'm just a tad impatient lol. I did see a cracking example advertised for about 15k a while ago with the 2.8L motor, everything rebuilt and receipts for all work - now that would have been a great buy, so yes, they do come along.

I like the red one and I emailed him yesterday but no answer yet. Yes quite a way away, but not out of the question if it is a good car. One worry I have with ex fire trucks is they can have a lot more use than the km show as the engine can run for days at a fire doing few kms. The guy selling the red one called it smokie, I asked if this is because it smokes or because it is an ex fire truck, but no reply yet. I just noticed he wants 18.5 k and he is selling without a safety certificate!!

Our Red 130 is 2003 Ex CFA Upwey Vic. Bought in 2007 with 5,000klms on the clock. We have the log books, it was a crew transport vehicle to the fire front. It spent most of its life in the station, so don't completely discount ex CFA you may find a gem like we did.

We bought a great fire truck Landy from Western Aus as a second truck for our station it was a bargain. I need to just keep looking.

Get the seller to offer a discount if he takes his twin hiclones out!!!

There are 2 x Hiclone installed in the the air intake and intercooler system which have improved the fuel economy and a slight increase in power ? see link below for more info on Hiclone.

38,000km but around a million hours of running normally. Also a bit knocked about for that money. There is a fully restored 300tdi for 25k so this is very expensive for its condition.
If it was not a fire truck though it would be probably worth it as then it would be really low km.

There is one nice looking Defender and the guy wont answer my email and he has not provided a contact number so annoying!! A td5 came up in Cairns which is only a couple of hours away, I spot the add only a couple of hours after it was posted and it was sold already, this is just not fair :(

Edit.. Now I have just been on my email, a car that has been listed for weeks and weeks which I discounted because it was a td5 I sent an email last night to ask a few questions and is someone coming today who is very interested in it grrr..

No worries,
About a month ago I asked for more pics from the seller which is how I know about the rust. It is a solid ute otherwise. I think it is a decent truck but worth a few thousand less due to the rust and the km.
